Years ago, when I hit on the title MATING IN CAPTIVITY, a friend told me about Esther Perel's book of the same name. I read it; it was great (I'm currently on her mailing list). I did some research on titling, and found: 1) Titles can't be copyrighted; any number of authors can use the same title. 2) Title repetition occurs more often than one might think (for example, there are not one but two memoirs called THE MOTHER KNOT). 3) Title repetition is more likely to cause confusion when the books in question share a genre. Since my book is a memoir and Perel's is narrative nonfiction, I expect confusion to be minimal - and hey, if someone goes hunting for her book and finds mine (or vice versa), what's the harm? The more books, the merrier!
