In creating Rochester's first ever parklet, we will join a national movement that celebrates local grass roots initiatives, community building, and sustainable transportation. Parklet provide amenities like seating, planting, bike parking, and art and are intended to be fixtures within the urban landscape.
While parklets are maintained by neighboring businesses, residents, and community organizations, they are publicly accessible and open to everyone.
The prototype parklet project will be located at 1344 University Ave in front of Joe Bean Coffee Roasters. A several hundred foot defunct fire lane will be transformed into public green space that will foster built in seating and bicycle parking through a project rooted in accessibility, sustainability, innovation and superior design.
The public parklet will begin to shift our city and neighborhood toward a healthier, more walkable and enriched public realm beginning in our commercial district adjacent to the Neighborhood of the Arts (NOTA). Our prototype parklet will reflect the diversity and creativity of the people and organizations who have designed it and the project will be fabricated through a public planning process.
Recently, the City of Rochester expressed their official support for the prototype parklet recognizing that the project will add value throughout business districts across the city. The city recognizes the values of parklets to increase walkability, bike-ability, and increase local economic development and overall quality of life.
Upon the successful completion of our project, the City of Rochester will seek to formally launch a municipally led parklet program city-wide. We welcome your involvement in this groundbreaking project here in the City of Rochester, as we begin to evolve our rustbelt heritage through transformational public green space. The prototype parklet is anticipated to be completed by the Spring of 2016.Join us as we seek to bring renewed vitality to our neighborhood and make our city public spaces come alive!

Risks and challenges
We have assembled an amazing team rooted in Hospitality (Joe Bean), design (Staach), and placemaking (Slow Road) with our advisory committee and team (shown above).
Our team brings over 30 years of combined experience in project management, business ownership, and project design. We feel confident and ready to take on the possible risks associated with this endeavor. To our benefit, we have already cleared significant hurdles and red tape with the strong endorsement and ongoing participation from the City of Rochester - their eyes are watching as we seek to pilot the first ever parklet in our city.
Successful funding will enable us to complete a minimum of Phase 1 of our Parklet, located directly at 1344 University directly in front of Joe Bean Coffee Roasters. Funding support raised will go towards materials (wood, steel, plantings) and construction costs (operational expenses) of the parklet.
As we begin building the parklet infrastructure outside, we will examine all aspects of sidewalk (fire lane) and public space improvement. If for any reason we reach challenges in installation, we have Chief City Engineer Jim McIntosh along with other resources in City Hall ready and able to lend support as needed.
We will keep all of our supporters and backers updated as to progress or challenges, we greatly look forward to improving the fabric of our neighborhood and creating the Rochester Parklet beginning in the Spring of 2016.
Thank you for your support!!
