For the past couple of years, every Monday, some Wednesdays and for one Sunday a month my house is filled with joyful, screaming artists who love the sport of professional wrestling. It wasn't always this way though! I grew up in New Zealand, throwing myself from a chair to the couch and bed by myself as I watched wrestling tapes I bought off EBay.
I went to an introductory training camp for professional wrestling when I was an overweight 15 year old, with dreams of jumping off ladders… and I busted both my knees. Now I'm a slightly less overweight 31 year old living in Los Angeles, writing comics and cartoons with my partner of 10 years… and I still love wrestling.
A few of years ago, I was drawn back to the sport. I'd always kept following it, but my roommates and fellow cartoonists were curious too. They got hooked, their friends got hooked and it turned into a long-standing tradition, my house sometimes filling with up to forty people to watch Wrestlemania and a crew of around ten of us try to make it to every Pro Wrestling Guerrilla show. We nick-named ourselves Muscle Temple, started a goofy Tumblr with our drawings, but mostly just drew wrestlers to make each other laugh.
Now we want to share it with you in the form of a comic book featuring a few different silly and weird comic stories as well as illustrations by a bunch of incredibly talented cartoonists and animators! We want to show people who dig comics and cartoons how fun wrestling can be, and we want to show wrestling fans some goofy art that will hopefully make them laugh.
WHY DO YOU NEED 20 GRAND?!
Publishing books is expensive and we will need to print a lot of them to make it cost effective and to ensure we have adequate stock going forward after the Kickstarter.
Having worked in self-publishing and on a number of fantastic Kickstarter projects in the past, the most important thing to me is that we must fairly compensate each artist for their work. When we exceed our goal, we will continue to add fun prizes that will give y'all fun merch and continue to better compensate the artists. This project is for fun, but comics take a lot of time and effort!
Risks and challenges
Anthologies are always tough work, it's hard to coordinate a crew of busy artists who have a lot of work to do. However, I have experience in doing this! As part of B9 Kingdom, I helped publish 15 books over a period of three years through Kickstarter.
I'm also experienced in self-publishing. Outside of B9, my first Kickstarter was for the children's book Tigerbuttah in 2010, followed by Tiny Kitten Teeth in 2013. I'm also being assisted by Amanda and Geoffrey from the Devastator, magazine editors and publishers in coordinating the actual production of the book. We also have at our disposable the abilities of coordinator Joaquin Poblete, who has a lot of experience in managing teams in television! We're gonna make this happen!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
