About this project
Ripples of Hope: How Empowered And Inspired Youth Are Changing the World!
Ripples Video Introduction by Dr. Jane Goodall.
In June of this year Stuart & I (Gregory) found ourselves filming Jane Goodall on tour, for the love of the game , (you must read the whole story in the updates section) because we were inspired by a film we saw that featured her.
While filming, we heard Jane tell the story of how the Jane Goodall Institute´s youth program, Roots & Shoots, was the original idea of 12 African (Tanzanian) teenagers, and how their inspiration led to Jane Goodall lending her full support to them and how this original idea has spread to over 123 countries and 150,000 young people who are fully engaged in positive ACTion.
We were inspired and amazed by this story and felt, just why do we not hear more about these kind of stories instead of all of the typical, negatively charged tales of disengaged youth and ‘lazy’ teenagers?
After spending the whole day filming the mega-inspirational and passionate Jane Goodall and becoming positively inspired by what she has done, what she is doing and most importantly how the great sustainable projects that they are working on in Africa are making a real difference, driven by locals and most importantly empowering young people, our lizard-like brains (they’re quite intelligent for their size) started gurgling and pulsating.
We know that the best way to engage the West to become aware of global situations is through the web, TV and cinema. So, we had the inspiration and great desire to make a docu-film surrounding this truly inspiring story and how their “ripples” (borrowed this word from Nobel Peace Prize Winner Desmond Tutu!) have and are continuing to be felt throughout the world.
It is our aim to show that there are people in Africa who are committed to positively undertaking many seemingly small acts and are taking creative action to empower themselves and others. This Africa is much more than the poverty, aids and war that many people believe this great continent to be, in fact lots of us are enablers of tragic situations there by turning a blind eye, and the fact that we indirectly and directly support the impoverishment of others daily. We would also like to show that if each one of us commits to doing something positive, then saving ourselves and our planet is achievable. ‘The planet is fine. Compared to the people, the planet is doing great. Been here four and a half billion years. Did you ever think about the arithmetic?’ - George Carlin
We would like this film to raise awareness about the spirit and strength of empowered people, young and older, who are taking action, because we believe their stories contain uniting and powerful messages that surpass all race and religion and connect to our collective spirit, our humanity. The film will also feature African musicians and artists who are working to creatively to change things (there is a great Tanzanian Reggae musician/organic farmer/environmental activist whom we plan to film).
We would like to do it "Playing For Change” style. Our plan is to give the musicians (Creative Commons) the “Music Video” clips we film in order for them to be able to promote themselves and their causes and for our "Ripples" film to have some uniquely powerful, and original music footage. See one of our own examples here: Topoke - Africa Motto
We are also going to give a Canon 550D Video/Stills camera and an H4N stereo sound recorder to an engaged African teen whom we will train and empower to capture their day to day moments, unfiltered and from their own perspective, for the duration of the journey.
In 1991, a group of 12 local teenagers met with Dr. Jane Goodall on her back porch in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. They were eager to discuss a range of problems they knew about from first-hand experience that caused them deep concern.
Their discussion covered topics such as pollution in the city, deforestation in the mountains, the welfare of domestic animals and the future of wild animals, including Dr. Jane's threatened Chimpanzees.
These motivated young people wanted to learn more, they were willing to take action and they hoped that their peers would join with them to help make a difference. Dr. Jane was impressed by their compassion, their energy and their desire to develop a grassroots style solution to problems. Although Dr. Jane was involved in their meetings, the project was carried out totally by the teens. Their first-ever Roots & Shoots project was local—educating villagers about more humane treatment of chickens at home and in the region's markets. It was a small program, but encompassed all the hallmarks of what makes Roots & Shoots truly unique: youth-driven projects fueled by knowledge, compassion and action.
What We’re Doing? Simply, we’re raising money to produce a film about what we feel is an important and meaningful story to share with the world, inspire us even further and hopefully inspire you!
Why We’re Doing It?
We're just a few passionate and very normal guys & gals who decided to take a chance to tell a story that will inspire us all to make a positive change, however small, that helps those around us and the environment, and have us realize that, as Dr. Jane herself says,
“Every single one of us can make a difference, every single day.”
Why All the the ECO-STUFF?
The easy answer, Blame It On Valerie! (B.I.O.V.) Valerie is Gregory’s & Gina’s mom who was an Organic freak back when Organic meant Hippie (which she was not) and Weird (sometimes - oops, hope mom is not reading this..Love you mom). Valerie has not only influenced & inspired her children towards a lifelong passion for Organic food, but her own “ripples” have since spread to hundreds more. Bottom line: we believe that there is no cheap when it comes to our or your children’s futures, therefore, you will receive GREAT ECO-PRODUCTS as our Kickstarter Rewards.
Why a Carbon Neutral Film?
We feel that we cannot make a film about protecting of the environment, our human family and animals without "Walking Our Talk", so every part of the production of this film will be offset by the Carbon Fund,The Carbon Fund is rated as the best Carbon Offset Company by Treehugger and our transportation, electricity, paper, events and shipping will all be offset.
What’s in the digital download package? Everyone who donates at least $10 will receive our password protected digital download package. We will continually add to this package, but here is what we will include: -Selected RUFCUTS from the film. -All digital posters, photos and desktop wallpaper produced for the film.
Can I Gift An Incentive? YES! Great idea. If you would like to donate to the film but give the reward to someone as a gift, go through all the normal process of making a donation in your name. For billing purposes, this action must be in your name. After our deadline, we will send a message to you on Kickstarter. (It will be forwarded to the email address you provided) We will request things like your t-shirt size and address from you at that time. Please reply with all the person’s information that is to receive the reward. We will make sure they are the person who receives the reward.
When the film is funded, when will it release? When we realize our funding goals (Hopefully will get a little over) filming will begin in March 2011 finish by May 2011 and post-production will begin soon after filming is complete. The plan is to have the movie released sometime in the late fall of 2011 before Christmas. All of us involved will make sure YOU know when it’s due to release.
When will we get our stuff (T-Shirts, Bags Etcetera)? Immediately after our deadline we will start to manufacture and will keep you updated on shipping schedules. It will be our priority to schedule the more personal incentives as soon as possible. You will hear from us. (More on this as we get closer to our deadline)
All incentives, big and small, will only happen if our goal is met. If we do meet our goal and once the funds are in our account we will immediately start the production process with the great and reputable ECO-PRODUCT manufacturers we have already researched and contacted. If a package says “when film is completed” you will receive the items when the film is finished. You will get a message from us requesting information from you like your T-shirt size, address, etc. At that time, please reply to us as soon as possible so that we can complete your incentive. We will keep you updated real time during the product production process.
What happens if the money isn’t raised in time?
Unfortunately nothing. If our goal isn’t met before the deadline, no money changes hands and no movie is made. We want to avoid this scenario at all cost!
Can we exceed the Funding goal?
YES! YES! We are operating “Lean & Clean” as they say. Kickstarter will allow as much money as is given before the deadline. Extra money means that we can have some great funky Animations, hire an Extra great editor...The possibilities are endless.
When will there be a “Ripples of Hope” ECO Website?
Gregory will begin building the new Ripples site immediately after the funding process is completed. The Ripples website will be powered by “The Wind & The Sun” - by our preferred Green hosting company Thinkhost.com
How do we contact you?
Glad you asked! You can contact us directly at firstname.lastname@example.org We check it regularly. We will get back to you. We promise!
Who does the money go to?
Every penny (minus the fees for Kickstarter’s involvement and Amazons small fee) of your money goes directly to the funding of this film.
Any other questions? Just ask us. We’d be extremely happy to answer them. email@example.com
