About

i just strarted my journey as a blacksmith. I have made it my hobbie for now. I have made my self a make shift forge. I bought and anvil and made a stand for it. I have also made a small knife. My next project i want to do is sheperds hooks, castings, key hooks, and tool. I have really enjoyed this and want to continue my journey. One thing blacksmiths would make is a traveling anvil. It was made by take a peace of metal and put a thick spike on it to hammer it to nto a fallen tree of stump. The bellows the blacksmiths used where made out of canvis or lether hide and where about two to three feet wide and about four to five feet long on the large side.

my name is doug moffitt i amm 27 years old. my dream is to own my own buseness that i can run at home. i want to be able to be there for my kids and teach them a trade that can improve their lives. i also want to be my own boss and make more able jobs for others in this had time.

what i ant to acheve from my kickstaarter is get a better forge, tools, and start up materials. with this materia i should be able to make enough product to go to the s.c.a. and renaceons fairs to sell my products. this way i can makeenough prouduct to move to my own shop.

the tools and equipment i need is going to be apropain forge, a bigger anvil, casting suplys, belt grinder, hand crank blower, a crusable, and some other small tool alonge with metal to work. i think that this will take about $4.500 for a good forge, tools, and metal materials. if i could get this then i could turn my hobbie in to a buseness.

i want to bring back some of the older ways of blacksmithing. some of the things blacksmiths worked with is iron ore, metal sand. i want to take these older practices to the s.c.a.fairs to show pepole the way blacksmiths used to work and show them how to use these practices.

here are some things blacksmith use:

hardies and sets: tools the sit in the anvil the help cut or shift the metal in difrent ways needed.

fullers: top and bottom are used to spread the metal in a horizontal direction.

swage: a shaped tool or die forr giving a desired form to metal by hammering orr pressure.

swage block the swage block is a versatile bottom tool that is smotimes called a swafe anvil.

set hammer: set in place and stuck with a sledge hammer.

header: used to shape nail and bolt heads.

twisting wrench: used to twist metal more balanced.

coal: bitumineus is the best coal for blacksmiths.

damascus steel. is made from two kinds a metal. 1085 carbon stell and 15n20 steel.

Risks and challenges

the risks that i face is not being able to reach my goal of treaning this hobbie into a buseness. the challenges i face is not being able to find the right material, equipment, and transporting good to and from the s.c.a. and renaissance fairs.
