Straightforward answers to letters from animal lovers by Daisy Mae, the "Dear Abby" of the Dog World
Dear Daisy Mae: The Dear Abby of the Dog World
If you’ve ever adopted a dog, you know that, like babies, they don’t come with “How-To” manuals. Ours sure didn’t. The amazing Daisy Mae arrived at Miami Airport in a little pink travel cage. She had just traveled 1.100 miles by car and jet from a farm near St. Louis, Missouri.
Somehow, the moment this tiny, 8-week old creature licked our faces, our lives were transformed. We realized we needed help so we researched on the Internet, asked friends, got her a vet, a groomer, and a trainer – Dr. Joseph Hardy, Helen Fajardo, Mike Miller, all great people, but …
… still, we had plenty of questions and so, apparently, did a lot of people at our local Dog Park. We decided to create a website (DearDaisyMae.com ) for dog owners with questions that Daisy Mae would answer. (Actually, we answer them the way she would if she could type.) After a while, some of the people who sent questions and/or followed her on Twitter and Facebook asked if we were planning a Dear Daisy Mae book. We weren’t but it sounded like a great idea, so, delighted, we launched THE Dear Daisy Mae Book Project.
It was the first time we became our own clients (we've marketed everything from Spas to Bank's Home Equity Loans)…and we were bursting with ideas for this book and ways we could help dog owners. It is a great chance for us to share some of our learning as it has been an exciting adventure to watch our little puppy grow up from a pooping, barking and mischievous little imp, to an "almost civilized" dog, who still has some challenges to work on (like the screeching barking on the way to Dog Park).
We decided to make the book look great: 32 pages hard cover and in full color. We'll still feature the photos of the dogs who send in the questions (and sometimes other animals do too)…and once we had a potbelly pig with a question. We want the book to be informative as well as entertaining. We hope people will buy copies for themselves and some as gifts.
We also wanted to really show our gratitude to our friends here who might want to give very generously to help us publish this "labor of love" book People who donate over $100. Will have their name printed in the Book with our Special Thanks.. We're also printing a Special Edition for our Benefactors: The Deluxe Edition which will look great and mention the donor and also be signed by the Author and Illustrator. We hope it will be a keepsake for them. Everyone who helps us will get our Progress Reports (with photos) by email…so you really become a part of this Project.
It is our dream to have the book in print by early 2014, and we hope people will find it informative, fun to read and a great gift. We also hope it makes dog owners and canine family members very happy. Please help us publish this wonderful book. We thank you for reading this.
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Collectively, those of us involved in the Daisy Mae project are pretty familiar with managing the risks involved in planning, creating, printing, and distributing.
This is a labor of love (of dogs) that we do in our spare time, and we see three main challenges.
One is finding the right printer at the right price who can work with us on “staging” the print runs to fulfill orders immediately and in the near future – as required. We’re pretty sure we’ve found the right one already.
The second challenge is finding the right audience and persuading enough people to buy the book. We plan to use social media, which we’d run from our office, to direct potential buyers to an e-commerce enabled Daisy Mae website. This is the hardest part.
Third, is fulfillment – shipping the books quickly to buyers. We plan to do it as the last thing we do every day.
Along the way, we will, track what works best and do more of it, dropping elements that aren’t working at all.
And, of course, we’ll keep all of Daisy Mae’s backers up to date on progress.
