After 25 years as a choreographer, master instructor and performer of
modern dance and tap, Shirley Jenkins’ career came to a screeching halt.
Now, after a 14-year journey and triumph over uterine cancer, breast cancer, major back surgery and total hip replacement, she returns to the stage with new emotional, gripping and heartfelt works in DanceJenkinsDance!!! at Broadway Performance Hall on Seattle’s Capitol Hill, December 9 through 11, 2011 (Tickets are available at www.brownpapertickets.com or 1-800-838-3006)
During the past year, Shirley has returned to teaching both modern and tap at Cornish College of the Arts and Velocity Dance Center and is a certified Pilates instructor at Pilates Seattle International.
Those who truly know Shirley are not surprised at her comeback, although
she had her doubts, especially when she was hospitalized for major
Longing to re-connect to the emotional and kinetic world of dance to heal, she surrounded herself with supportive members of the dance community who encouraged her to be in a studio and begin moving slowly. Her path culminates on the stage of Broadway Performance Hall on Capitol Hill in Seattle, Washington. Shirley has not just choreographed works from her heart, often with unflinching and visible emotion, but she also performs in physically challenging roles onstage.
Creating these vital and expressive works and rehearsing with a gifted group of dancers continues to inspire Shirley as she counts the days to the performance.
Your gift to DanceJenkinsDance!!! will go to performer stipends, venue rental, rehearsal space, artistic personnel, props, costumes and other production costs.
