About

Lockation is a brand new escape room experience that will satisfy even the most hardcore Escape Room enthusiast.

Lockation is a cooperative game in which 1-5 players have 45-90 minutes to save Jane Esposito. Our game differentiates itself from conventional Escape rooms because of its mobility and focus on the story. We have developed a storyline that will captivate the player's attention and will raise the stakes of the game.

The game can only be played when there is an internet connection present. You will need it to watch the intro video and to access the hints which will be essential during the game if you get stuck.

The story focuses on the virus that was created by Alfred Colton, this virus has the potential to rid the world of disease in the right hands. However, it could also cause the end of civilisation as we know it in the wrong hands.

Jane Esposito is Alfred's Girlfriend and when Alfred gets taken by the bad guys she immediately takes the suitcase, which contains the virus, to a safe location. However, when she tried to open the suitcase she was poisoned by its failsafe mechanism... She's asking you for help... can you save her?

What is an Escape room ??

According to Wikipedia, an escape room, also known as an "escape game", is a physical adventure game in which players solve a series of puzzles and riddles using clues, hints, and strategy to complete the objectives at hand. Players are given a set time limit to unveil the secret plot which is hidden within the rooms. Escape rooms are inspired by "escape-the-room"–style video games. Games are set in a variety of fictional locations, such as prison cells, dungeons, and space stations, and usually, the various puzzles and riddles themselves follow the theme of the room. Escape rooms became popular in North America, Europe and East Asia in the 2010s. Permanent escape rooms in fixed locations were first opened in Asia and followed later in Hungary, North America, Australia, New Zealand, Russia and South America.

Lockation follows the exact same concept but is made specifically to be more budget-friendly and to be playable at home, with the website and story making up for what it lacks in material value.

How the game works

when the players open the box they will see three unique codes which they must enter on the website to play the game. After choosing a difficulty level (45-60-90 minutes) the players will watch the intro video after which the timer starts running. Each envelope/box in the game is numbered. This is the order in which the players need to play the game.

For example, the players have found the answer to riddle one, they must then enter the code on the website. if it is correct they will be allowed to proceed to the next riddle, if not they will see a message that states that the code they have entered is incorrect.

If/when the players reach the ending of the game they will see an end video after which their statistics will be shown on the screen. These statistics show how long it took the group to finish the game, how many hints they used and IF they were successful. REMEMBER... there are multiple Endings to this game!

About me

Graduation
Graduation

Hi, my name is Volkan in this section I am going to explain a bit more about myself, what Lockation is and what my vision is for the near future.

I am a 23-year-old gaming enthusiast and enjoy playing games with storylines attached to them. Having played and researched my fair share of escape rooms you could also call me an expert on this subject.

Additionally, it seems important to add that I have just graduated this summer from the University of Worcester, MSc International Management. before that, I got a professional Bachelor's degree from the UC Leuven-Limburg in energy technology and a Bachelor-After-Bachelor's degree in Advanced business Management also from the UCLL where I first started Lockation as a school project.

The idea

Lockation is an escape room on the go, the initial idea was to capture an amazing adventure inside a Harry Potter-esque suitcase and rent it out so people can play an escape room experience in the comfort of their own home. However, during the planning phase, things started to change when we wondered how we could possibly fit a €10.000+ escape room inside a normal suitcase. the answer came to us when we visited an escape room in the neighbourhood, although it was a great experience we noticed that once the game was over and you are out of the room the details of why we were there in the first place were unclear. I am talking about the lack of story development in these escape rooms. At Lockation we believe that the story is what people connect the most with and if we can create an experience that immerses the players in the story, we would be able to create a suitcase that has an equal emotional value to a classic escape room by adding something that they lack... the intriguing story of Jane Esposito in the form of a short movie with multiple endings depending on the groups choices.

First prototype

Lockation started as a school project at the UCLL when I was studying Advanced Business Management. There was a tournament taking place and I desperately wanted to win it so I went all out with my group to create something new and special. This resulted in the creation of Lockation and back then it was meant to be rented out but because we lacked the time and the budget we couldn't market this well enough for it to be successful. Below you can see a screenshot of the movie we filmed for this game and the suitcase we used in the beginning. The first prototype contained boxes with locks and the only way to open the last one is by solving the riddles in the previous boxes. the suitcase also contained a module you could connect to your tv and a keypad. Basically, the players could enter codes to receive hints in exchange for 2 minutes of their time. When the players enter the correct code at the end of the game, the time stops and they see a video with the ending of the story.

You are obviously wondering if we managed to win the tournament with this project... I am sad to say we did not. Despite our best efforts and great presentation, we lost in the Belgian finals. Anyway, we stopped as a group and I went further with this project by myself.

Second prototype

The second iteration was the same but was improved by the implementation of a screen and speakers into a custom-made wooden suitcase. This suitcase was given to TrappedIn Houthalen ,an actual Escape room, to check if they would like the product... they absolutely loved it but the problem remained the same. We couldn't find the right clients for the projects and it was not a financial success. However, it did prove that the concept was good it just needed to be tweaked a little and although the suitcase was cool it was also very heavy to carry, weighing around 20kg.

Third prototype

Since renting it out did not become a huge success we focused on making a sell-able product in the third iteration of Lockation as well as making it look professional and aesthetically pleasing for the consumer. To accomplish this we removed the electronics and replaced it with a website where the players can access the program we wrote, the players can connect their laptop with a flatscreen television or beamer if they have one with an HDMI cable. Each box contains three unique codes that the players need to enter on the site before they can play the game. So this version will only be playable if there is an internet connection present. the riddle boxes are now smaller and lighter than they ever were and are graphically updated to make each item in the box look great, a friend of ours is a designer and is helping us with this project.

Current plans

With the money we gain from Kickstarter, we want to start producing the Dutch version of this product and sell it in Belgium and the Netherlands. unless we can reach our stretch goals the English version of Lockation: Jane Esposito will remain a Kickstarter exclusive product. Detailed stretch goals can be found below.

The vision for the future of this company

After a successful start with Jane Esposito we want to add a second episode to this storyline... This will also be put on Kickstarter later on and will be developed with professional game developers and better actors.

the point is that we have a story to tell and we desperately wish to be able to do so, but in order for that to happen we need a minimum of 10.000 euros to start the production of our product "Lockation: Jane Esposito".

We really appreciate that you've read this description and hope that you'll help us with a pledge, even if it is just a single euro it will still make a difference and we will show our thanks by adding your name to the end credits of the movie.

Risks and challenges

We believe we succeeded in realizing the biggest challenge for this game, which was to create a complete escape room experience inside a suitcase that can be played at home for a fraction of the price that would be needed to be payed for an actual escape room.

Because we developed a website to be used WITH the game, we basically eliminated the need for locks and other expensive products. this resulted in a cheaper price with a unique experience attached to it. However, the players will need to be fair and must follow the rules of the game. You only open the envelope or box that the website tells you to open.

To conclude, we hope you get the chance to play it and will support Lockation in its growth. The thing about this project is the fact we have a lot more kickass ideas for the next game but we can't really go forward with those ideas until we realize our goals for this game.

If we do get funded expect a lot more action from us on Kickstarter with better gameplay, better actors, better riddles and a better experience in the next episode of Jane Esposito.

Thank you

Team Lockation
