I think we all have that friend, or we ourselves, that have dropped dice on the table like it's an orbital strike. troops that have been through Zeno raids, zombie lands, Orc infested lairs and other places and survived find themselves crushed by a giant cube or some other geometric shape requiring a quick trip to the med facility for a quick dab of zap-a-gap just to continue the battle. we've all also seen our empire of hotels and houses victims of this as well.
I want to produce gaming dice towers that are functional( I'm of the Bauhaus school) that look cool too. When I started this project I planned to have a shop make these for you(us,me) because I thought that would be the best way to get it done fastest. after much run around I was Shocked at what they wanted to make my towers. I guess the basic standard is $2.00 per minute of run time just for the laser work. as these towers take 45 to 55 minutes that just wouldn't work with a cost of around $90.00 each. I did get a rough estimate of $30.00 for the laser work, but even that is too high in my opinion as that would not include any of the many other things to be considered, such as fees, materials, and all the shipping considerations and I was trying to get the total price to around $30-35. the best way I can come up with is Kickstarter and I believe it's what Kickstarter is all about. I need the machine, nothing big or fancy (which is still kind of expensive) and do it myself with help from my youngest Vincent.
here's what we got so far
the pin holds the tower in both the open and closed positions.
they measure 6.25" long-3.5" wide-6.25" tall when open and 2.125" tall folded
Here is the selection of Dice Tower Designs you can chose from.
The New non-folding designs, see update #3 for more info.
I know blank might sound odd but, i've seen some crazy art with sharpies so i'll leave this option open.
you'll have your choice of Maple, Red Oak, or Birch for wood.
you will have the option (except fast monkey) to get the Tower as a kit (will include 3 rubber bands and a piece of sand paper) or assembled with a coat of linseed oil. I'm looking into colored stains (red, green, and yellow) and varnish as potential options. more designs are in the works; Celtic knots and some Character art.
thanks to my Daughter and her friends i have a pretty good base on Facebook, https://www.facebook.com/manglermonkey?ref=aymt_homepage_panel . please check it out and like my page if you do and help pass this on. the gamer community is a power all it's own.
i am working on more designs as both offerings and for stretch goals. if this seems alittle thin right now just keep watching.
SHIPPING TO THE WORLD----
I have rest of world shipping as "rest of world, shipping is actual cost minus $4.00". so for 1 tower you would add about $9.00, Canada $4.00, and 2 towers you would add about $13.00, Canada $7.00. these numbers reflect pledge amount minus U S shipping ($4.00) and adding cost to your location. this would be calculated at the end of this kickstarter, the above numbers are based on USPS 1st class international rates. I will be looking into a less expensive alternatives. please see update #1
Risks and challenges
Well, things do happen, but in the course of my design and prototype stages I have dislocated my shoulder and been hit by a car walking to the bus stop on the way to the makerspace I was doing this at, and didn't miss a day, and still got out my 2 a day towers. I've been lucky enough to talk to others with completed Kickstarters and have my numbers pretty solid. the VERY WORST case scenario I can still produce 8 to 12 towers a week like I do now. I so don't want to go back to the circus. just because your very good at something doesn't mean you want to do it. I want to do things I like to do. there are win, win, and win situations out there and i think this is one. I will meet my promises.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
