Welcome to Terra, a parallel world where magic lives and the dinosaurs never died out. Humans never evolved on Terra--instead, the world is dominated by floral life and saurians. Humans exist on Terra, however, drawn from the legendary world of Earth.
On Earth, humans number in the teeming billions, unaware of their magical potential and heroic birthright, but when Terra's fate hangs in the balance, it draws human champions across the Warp of space. These champions can act for good or ill, but theirs is the power to change the fate of a world.
Five years ago, the Dragon Empire subjugated the peaceful Mandragoran Kingdom, slaying the Sunflower King and sending his daughter and only heir, the Peachblossom Princess, into exile. The barbarian kappa and their fungal berserker allies run roughshod over the mandragoran people--and the land can no longer bear their pain. It calls for champions!
Whether Earth-born or Terran, it matters not! What matters is a hero's spirit. You will need power, wisdom, and courage to face the dangers of the Mushroom War.
Terra needs heroes!
Heroes of Terra: The Mushroom War is a role-playing game using the Savage Worlds Adventure Edition rules by Blackwing Productions. Come adventure in a world of floral sorcery and saurian savagery!
Heroes of Terra is a pulp-fantasy setting in the vein of classic sword-and-sorcery literature, with a world that pays homage to classic video games of the early 1980s. It's also strongly influenced by the isekai genre of Japanese anime and manga. You can think of the world of Terra as Conan the Barbarian, but the main character is a mustachioed Italian plumber instead of Arnold Schwarzenegger. Or The Lord of the Rings with characters from Super Smash Brothers as the Fellowship.
Influences on the setting include Super Mario Brothers, The Legend of Zelda, Elric of Melniboné, Conan the Barbarian, John Carter of Mars, the Lankhmar novels, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Donkey Kong Country, KonoSuba, and more, all thrown into a blender on high speed.
Jump high, grow huge, and break open chests filled with gold coins and flowers that give you magic powers. The various wink-and-nod references throughout the setting help Heroes of Terra work on two levels: first, as a semi-parody of beloved classic video games; and second, as a semi-serious pulp-fantasy setting where the stakes are as high as the survival of nations.

Terra is a parallel world, created 65 million years ago when a rogue asteroid came hurtling from the void of space. The life force of the world burned hot to save itself from destruction, but the effort spit the fabric of reality in two.
In one world, the asteroid struck the world; while life was spared by the world-spirit's power, the life force of the world-spirit was irrevocably damaged, slowly draining away magic. That world was Earth, a place with almost no magic remaining by the modern day. Humans have evolved to utilize what little magic remains to its fullest potential, though they remain largely ignorant of their potential.
In the other world, the asteroid missed by the slimmest of margins. This world, Terra, remains a highly magical place. Dinosaurs remained dominant and mammals remained small and unimportant. Modern Terra hosts dozens of sentient races, the most numerous of them descended from saurians or from plants and fungi.
Until five years ago, the greatest nation in the world was the mighty Mandragoran Kingdom, a peaceful land of flowers and floral sorcery. In a devastating attack, the kingdom was toppled and is now occupied by the forces of the Dragon Empire, a barbarian horde of saurian warriors and fungal berserkers united by the mighty Dragon Emperor.
With the Sunflower King dead and his daughter either imprisoned or in hiding, the kappa have begun to exploit the kingdom's land to the breaking point. The land has begun to awaken, calling out for heroes and giving powerful gifts to those who will aid it.
This initial setting book is designed to introduce players to the world of Terra and the return of humans during a time of great crisis, the Mushroom War.

Humans and their return to Terra are the focus of the game, but they are not Terra's only heroes. Join the peaceful mandragora, quick quetzal, clever pudica, and even renegades from the dreaded kappa and myconite hordes as they seek to overthrow the Dragon Emperor and end his reign of terror!
This Kickstarter is designed to fund the first book of the setting line, Heroes of Terra: The Mushroom War, a setting book specifically focused on the continent of Lemuria and the conflict between the Dragon Empire and the Mandragoran Kingdom. This book will give you everything you need to adventure in the pulp-fantasy world of Terra and explore its wonders, mysteries, and terrors.
Additionally, one of this Kickstarter's major stretch goals is the writing of a Plot Point Campaign about the rebellion against the Dragon Emperor. Even without that campaign material, the Heroes of Terra setting book will give you all you need to run epic sword and sorcery adventures in a world where the dinosaurs never died out and magic still reigns.

All rewards for this Kickstarter are digital in nature, as well as vouchers for at-cost printing through DriveThruRPG's print on demand service. This is being done in order to avoid many of the pitfalls of role-playing Kickstarters, which often over-promise physical rewards and then have a hard time delivering on them. By focusing on the game itself--the setting, the plot point campaign, and adventures--it is my hope to be able to provide everything in a timely manner.
The writing for the setting book is around 90% done as of the beginning of this Kickstarter, barring additions from the reward tiers. The proceeds from this Kickstarter are primarily being used to pay for editing, professional layout, and art.
Everyone who pledges at least $1 will have access to the 12-page Heroes of Terra Jumpstart that was originally included as part of the Savage Worlds Adventure Edition Kickstarter! This 12-page document gives a brief overview of the world, the role of the players, mechanics, and a short adventure, "The Plumber's Dilemma." This jumpstart is intended as a preview of the setting to help $1 backers decide if they want to upgrade their pledges to get the full player's guide or setting book. Even if you cancel your pledge, feel free to keep the jumpstart!
(The Heroes of Terra Jumpstart will be included with Update #1 of this Kickstarter.)
Everyone who pledges $5 or more will receive a copy of the Player's Guide to the Mushroom War, a primer on the world of Terra, character creation for Terran heroes, and the magic of the land. This product currently exists in a "rough" version--fully written and edited, but without much in the way of art or layout. A finished version of the Player's Guide (in pdf) will be distributed to every person who pledged $5 or more upon successful completion of the Kickstarter!

The most basic stretch goal is for the writing of a Plot Point Campaign for Heroes of Terra: The Mushroom War, entitled "Our Princess is in Another Castle." This campaign will take members of the Peachblossom Resistance through a whirlwind adventure to find and rescue the Peachblossom Princess, restore her to the throne of the Mandragoran Kingdom, defeat the seven generals of the Dragon Empire who rule the subjugated kingdom, and overthrow the hold of the mighty Dragon Emperor.
Even if that stretch goal is not achieved, the basic setting book will include plenty of plot hooks, adventure seeds, and ideas for campaigns, but the plot point campaign will take those ideas, expand on them, and deliver a full-length campaign for immediate use. Since this portion of the book is in outline form only right now, the additional cost above the basic rewards is to set aside the time to complete writing, as well as additional costs for extra layout, editing, and art.
$4000: The plot point campaign gets written! Backers will receive a .pdf copy of the Plot Point Campaign "Our Princess is in Another Castle" as well as a random adventure generator and random encounter tables for adventuring in the world of Terra.
$5000: A set of eight pre-generated characters will be included with "Our Princess is in Another Castle," as well as bundled separately into lavish .pdf character folios as part of the Player's Guide. All characters generated through the Mandrake pledge tier will also be included in the character folio!
$6000: A full-color poster map of the Mandragoran Kingdom and the surrounding territories will be created as part of the Kickstarter campaign. A high-resolution .pdf of that poster map will be added to all digital reward tiers (Wildflower and up).
$8000: The amount of full-color art in Heroes of Terra will double, including character illustrations for the eight pre-generated characters from the Plot Point Campaign. This is the stretch goal needed to ensure lovely art for the Plot Point Campaign!
$10,000: "Our Princess is in Another Castle" will include a series of Savage Tales to round out the adventuring possibilities of the world of Terra, increasing the overall length of the plot point campaign!

As mentioned above, the basic writing for Heroes of Terra is virtually complete, requiring only editing changes, plus whatever additional materials are added to the setting as part of this Kickstarter. Should the stretch goals be met, some amount of additional time will be needed to complete the plot point campaign, commission the extra art, and so on.
In order to give everyone plenty of time to get everything done, I'm noting full completion as being by February of 2020, though everyone who pledges for $5 or more will receive a pdf of the rough-cut Player's Guide at the Kickstarter's completion and funding, as well as the finished Player's Guide as soon as it's done.

Risks and challenges
The setting book is mostly written and the material has been extensively playtested over a period of several years before being updated to Savage Worlds Adventure Edition. Even if I were to fall ill or (gasp!) die, I have colleagues who can oversee the completion of the project.
I am financially stable, with a regular career and a full-time job, so even if the costs somehow balloon out of control, I can make everything work.
This is my first role-playing Kickstarter, but I have learned extensively from other authors and creators, as well as being an active supporter of many other role-playing Kickstarters. I know what is expected of me, as well as how to juggle the various necessities of running a Kickstarter campaign.
The greatest risk involves delays due to artwork or layout issues, which I've done everything I can to mitigate, especially by limiting the rewards to digital-only or print-on-demand. I will consistently communicate with the team and all backers to ensure we're all in the loop about the project's progress. It is my intention to send out updates every couple of days during the Kickstarter itself, and then at least once a month thereafter until everything is done and ready.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
