Fundoshi is a type of traditional Japanese underwear. Up until the Edo period (1800s), Fundoshi served as the uniform for male workers. In the mid-twentieth century Western clothing began taking off and new types of underwear such as trunks and briefs arrived on the scene, causing the traditional underwear to rapidly fall out of fashion. Today Fundoshi is recognized as the “uniform” for sumo wrestling and festivals.
Please find more on Wikipedia's page for Fundoshi.
The star of this project, Ecchu Fundoshi, is quite simple – it's a strip of cloth about one meter (40 inches) long wrapped around the waist with a cord sewed on.
As shown below, it is very easy to put it on and off.
The best part about Fundoshi is, to say the least, the great breeze. It's easy to get on and easy to wash, and it offers an irresistible sensation for those times you are just getting out of the bath, getting ready for bed, or for when your lower body are sweating during humid summer.
When you quit wearing super-tight underwear, you invite a mild “thrill of the chill” to your body – it's said that the inside of your body will try and produce heat, in other words raise your capacity for thermogenesis, resulting in lively organ activity and improved circulation.
What's more, a topic particularly important to men
It's not good for the sperm-producing testes to be bundled up at such a warm temperature. In general the temperature should be around four degrees lower than body temperature. Wearing underwear like Fundoshi allows the temperature of the testes to drop, comprising one important factor in healthy sperm production.
Because both briefs and Fundoshi each have their respective merits, “let's switch over from briefs to Fundoshi!” said nobody, ever. (We're aiming for COEXISTENCE with briefs).
We suggest divvying up the use of briefs for the daytime and Fundoshi for sleeping (or just the weekends). Even just while sleeping, we want you to relax your body and mind. This is our wish In spreading the greatness of Fundoshi.
“We want to make Fundoshi that spread the Fundoshi culture to all the world!” In order to fulfill this dream, we've borrowed some inspirational design of “BOOM” and “THUD” from KAYAC Inc.
The revolutionary Fundoshi brand, SHAREFUN®, that is often featured on TV and in magazines, is spearheading production.
We even nit pick over the materials used. Excelling in water absorbency and odor resistant/anti-microbial effectiveness, the highest grade of natural linen is used. It's a gentle-to-wear Fundoshi that even the most delicate skinned people can put on worry-free.
The intricate sewing of both the linen part that directly touches the skin and the manga-design flap (made of cotton) is completed by a Kyoto artisan one-by-one, wholeheartedly, and with extreme care.
Moreover, because this project is a Kickstarter, sales are available not to the general public, rather only to those who kindly pledged to the cause. Perhaps this way they will become Fundoshi legends.
Through this project, we hope to spread the splendor of Fundoshi to all people of the world as they try it for themselves. Manga Fundoshi can be purchased for yourself or as a present to a special friend. We want you to relax. And finally, we aim to rejuvenate the world.
In return, you will experience the thrill of adopting Fundoshi into your everyday life.
We want to make your life just a little bit happier with Fundoshi, a bona fide object of Japanese culture.
The pledges will cover the costs of the stocking and treatment of the cloth, as well as the commission rates for the sewing hands for “Manga Fundoshi”.
In order to minimize the overall cost, we will ship the reward product from Japan. The Pledge price includes the cost of US shipping, but does not include customs or duties. Please double check on this before making pledges.
After the project succeeds, we will ask you for the size. Please select from following sizes.
Men’s For the person with waist 40 inches (100 cm) or less
Men’s XL For the person with waist from 40 (100 cm) to 47 inches (120 cm)
Women’s For the person with waist 40 inches (100 cm) or less
The version you can have delivered (International Version or Japan Version) is chosen by the Japan Fundoshi Association. While we will request the versions desired by our contributors after reaching the goals of the project, please understand that there's a chance that the version actually sent may not line with your initial preference.
The Fundoshi product pledged over $80 will come in the beautiful Masu Wood-Box.
Long-established Masu Wood-Box maker (and instigator in the box's popularity in New York) “Ohashiryoki” and the Japan Fundoshi Association operate together under limited collaboration. The subtle aroma of the hinoki cypress is quite dreamy.
Culture that Japan is proud to show the world: Masu-Boxes and Fundoshi. The Fundoshi Masu Box-set version is the optimal gift for a special friend, or even to yourself.
Other use of Masu Box:
1) Pour Sake and drink.
2) Put something.
3) As an interior.
Two years ago the Japan Fundoshi Association president fell ill and was forced into recuperation in his home for half a year. During that time, he unwittingly stumbled across and was moved by the pleasantries of Fundoshi. He became well, and his life changed a great deal. Because of this very experience, he truly believes that spreading Fundoshi will help others invigorate their lives, little by little improving the spirit of the entire world.
Please join us in starting conversations with, “Actually I'm all-in for Fundoshi,” and the excitement of adopting this new thing into your daily life.
Manga Fundoshi can make your life, or the life of a close friend, just a little bit happier. We kindly ask for your support in any degree possible. Thank you for your consideration.
The producer SHAREFUN has produced a number of high quality Fundoshi, and therefore we do not see much risk in the production.
One possible risk is the exchange rate between US dollar and Japanese yen. If the exchange rate has dramatically changed, then it may become difficult to cover the production cost in Japan. However, to start this project, we strived to set the pricing to accommodate the changes to some context, and at the same time to offer at the most reasonable price. We will adjust as much as possible to accommodate possible changes in future.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
