Boundless [bound-lis adj]
1. Having no bounds; infinite or vast; unlimited
Sea Life Studios is an indie software development company created by two avid gamer 90's kids trying to make a splash in the game development community. We have been working night and day to bring our ideas to life to share with the gaming world. Our lead developer is Chad Hadzinsky, computer engineer, and former CEO of C HAD Studios that brought you iOS classics including Chipmunk Cannon, Monster Maze, Slime Surfer, Faller Baller as well as the Steam Greenlit title: CuBe DuDe.
Here at Sea Life Studios, we believe that all gamers, whether hardcore or just a casual dabbler, thirst for creative originality. Everyone has a genre that they call their favorite and that's why the diversity of the gaming spectrum is so great. Maybe you're into RPG's, Platformers, FPS, Racers, Puzzlers, Strategy, Sports or a combination of these and others. That is why we wanted to include every genre possible into our game, truly making the possibilities BOUNDLESS.
How does Boundless Utilize Creative Originality and Repeat Playability?
Boundless' uniqueness derives from its inability to be classified under one specific genre. Boundless: Salvation is an outlier, a melting pot of mini games coexisting with multiple storylines. We formatted Boundless' gameplay and storyline in such a way that your mini game performance and decision making ability in game opens doors to multiple paths each with alternate storylines, side quests, and mystery routes.
There are so many creative layers and paths to carve out and explore within the Boundless universe. The entire course of the game - including the galaxies you visit, the extraterrestrial species you meet, the games you play, and the direction of your mission - is affected by factors within your control. There is a "main quest" with several alternate endings, however the question remains whether or not you will have the mojo to make it there. Below is a visual demonstration to provide a little more clarity on our formula.
As you can see, your decisions and your performance actually matter and can change the entire course of the game. We really want to convey and instill a sense of curiosity for the player. We want the player to be pondering every move they make and consistently questioning their in-game antics...
"What if I won that last mini game? Would I be on a completely different path then I'm on now? What if I answered that question differently? Did I deviate away from the main quest? Will this side quest ultimately converge me back with the main quest? Who am I? What exactly is my purpose?
"The reason an adventure is so exhilarating, fun, unpredictable, and at times daunting is because it abandons structure and offers an unusual experience that often times pushes you outside your comfort zone."
The year is 2517 and you have been selected to embark on the most significant space expedition since 1969 when man first set foot on the moon. Your sponsor is AEROCORP - a private international space agency with seemingly benevolent plans for the future. You will be part of a 4-person crew including a Doctor, a Mechanic, and a Pilot. Sophia will accompany you as well: a state of the art AI who will provide you with vital information and guide you around the universe.
Earth is in shambles and the Milky Way Galaxy is suffering as a result. Massive overpopulation has caused a depletion of clean water and sustainable agriculture on Earth ...and the colonization of Mars, Europa, Titan, and Kepler-442b hasn't quelled the issue. In fact, the colonization of these planets has only provided procrastination and complacency for humanity.
Humanity started to believe they could flock onto a new planet, exhaust it for all it was worth, then move on to the next one. Rinse, Wash, Repeat. Perhaps the people didn't realize the rate of their consumption or maybe they forgot some basic truths: there are only 5 habitable planets for humans in the Milky Way, and all five are on the brink of transforming into desolate wastelands.
Leave no stone unturned and reveal some of the most captivating secrets of the universe. Keep your friends close and your enemies closer as you explore the depths of space.
"We don't have to save the galaxy. The galaxy is big enough to look after itself. What we have to concerned about is whether or not the galaxy we live in will be capable of sustaining us in it."
Who Am I?
A bitter cold seeps through your skin as you gasp for air. Your brain is muddled and your world spins as you try to massage the throbbing pain in your temples. It's as if you've just emerged from a drunk blackout after a night out on the town. Your eyes flicker open and the sensitivity of the light in the room burns through your pupils like a chemical fire. You feel a bit nauseous and your concept of time is in shambles. You close your eyes and fade back into your comfort zone; darkness, emptiness, nothing.
"Is he stable?"
We want players to unveil the backstory of the main character for themselves as they progress throughout the game. With every path you take and decision you make you will discover clues, hints, and ideas to solve the puzzle that is AEROCORPS greatest asset.
Armory: This is your ammunition haven. Restock, resupply, exchange out your weapons. Remember you can only bring two weapons from your arsenal per mission so you better choose your weapons wisely.
Mission Control Room: Here, Sophia will brief you on your next mission and you will be able to sift through her specialized database. This database will include your location in the universe, the closest planet to you, and the temperament and basic description of any extraterrestrial nearby.
Shooting range: How else are you going to test the weapons you retrieve throughout the universe?
Infirmary: There will be moments when members of your crew fall ill or injure themselves. Play a variety of mini games in the infirmary to nurse them back to health.
Engine Room: Your ship is sure to get its fair share of bumps and bruises along the way as well. Here you and your mechanic can team up to attempt to patch the Antares back together.
Hand to Hand Combat: If you're not a believer in any weapon other than your hands, this might be your favorite... Punch, kick, and combo your way out of sticky situations.
Hack and Slash: With over 50 swords to discover and unlock, bring out your Medieval side and Lancelot your way through whatever gets in your way.
Ye' Olde Bow and Arrow: Who cares if it doesn't make sense for the future? Every game with shooter elements should have the option to roll with the bow & arrow. With over 100 different bow and arrow combinations to unlock this is a classic for those who long for a more tribal approach throughout Boundless.
HexWare: A subsidiary of AEROCORP has engineered a brand of patented tech exclusively designed for your mission. You'll be outfitted with HexWare's latest Electromagnetic Wave/Particle generating gadgets. EWP is especially useful in close to mid-range encounters.
Guns Galore: SMGs, shotguns, snipers, rocket launchers, and more. Ammo is limited so keep that in mind should you come up the big guns
Ship Carnage: Yeah, we equipped the Antares with two blasters and a pulse cannon. That should be ample firepower if anyone tries some funny business on your watch.
Jump, boost, and drift your way through different environments. Collect elements and discover shortcuts along the way
The Explosive Electron Cannon and Plasma Blaster will be critical for your battles with space pirates and hostile forces. Be sure to dodge, duck, dip, dive, dodge... and Barrel Roll! And don't forget the Slalom Time Trials.
Who doesn't like Mario, Crash Bandicoot, Banjo Kazooie, IWBTG, etc. We created some old school 8-bit style 2D platformers as well as some contemporary 3D platformers. Some of these are going to be extremely challenging so try not to get too frustrated ;) we'll throw you some checkpoints along the way...
Find our version of a popular and addicting classic somewhere in the universe. We feel like most of you can appreciate shredding through wave upon wave of alien scum.
Escape the Room
You never know what decision could lead you to be held captive or behind bars. Point-and-click your way around the room to see ...can you escape?
Skill and Reaction Games
Put your skillz to the test in these fast-paced action games designed to see if you have what it takes. Win and impress your new alien friends. Lose and ...who knows?
Strategy and Puzzle Games
Sometimes the solution isn't always laid out for you nice and easy. I hope you brought your thinking-cap because your brain will be put to the test.
Gravity and Physics Games
Channel your inner Issac Newton and use the Universe's oldest laws to propel yourself to victory.
Retro-Inspired Arcade Games
Many retro classics re-imagined and brought to new life. Many of us weren't around when these games were first made, but maybe our parents were right about something for once... these games rock.
Text Base RPG's
A unique twist for gamers. You can't always use your brawn to get yourself out of challenging situations. Sometimes you have to use your wit and creativity. Inspired by games like A Dark Room, Zork, and Gemstone: Dragonrealms.
Who doesn't appreciate the international spectacle that is the Olympics?
The Space Olympics is one of our first major merger checkpoints in game. You will have to prove your worthiness amongst the intergalactic community in an array of Olympic-inspired events with an extraterrestrial twist.
Not only will you have the opportunity to meet a Gaurasaurus, a Clovine, and a Nightcrawler; you will also have the chance to ride them. With over 10 unlockable mounts to discover, explore extraterrestrial worlds on the backs of the locals. You can only bring one mount back to the Antares at a time so choose the mount companion that best suits your playstyle.
The intergalactic community doesn't care how many Dollars, Euros, Yen, or Rupees you have. They care about the resources you can bring to the table. Use your knowledge of the periodic table to collect, combine, synthesize, and trade elements across the galaxy. Every planet values elements differently so you'll have to trade wisely and learn the nuances of the intergalactic market.
Certain planets will have trading posts that can be accessed if you successfully complete the primary objectives outlined by Sophia in the Mission Control Room. Whether your mission is to locate resources, make connections with extraterrestrial leaders, or to completely annex an ill-willed species in an all out brawl - be on the lookout for trading posts throughout Boundless.
Each trading post has exotic weapons, items, and power ups that are unique to the planet they are located on.
"The galaxy is a diverse playground. Some planets host benevolent species, others harbor a more nefarious breed of life."
Here are some of the Aliens you could meet along your journey:
Be prepared to explore a variety of unique landscapes.
Jungles, Islands, Winter Wonderlands, Forgotten Ruins, Outer Space, Virgin Planets, Fiery Lairs, Alien Cities, and more.
Adventure Mode: This is our primary 1P campaign. Start with 5 lives and reveal as much as you can about the universe and your mission.
Ranging Difficulties: We will include three dynamic difficulties: Breezy, Steezy, Cheezy. These difficulties range from easiest to hardest, respectively. Everyone will start at Breezy. Steezy and Cheesy unlock upon successful completion of Adventure Mode on Breezy.
Mini Game Mode: We are fully aware of the vast array of games we've included. Perhaps you've mastered adventure mode and you just want to chill and play some of your favorite mini games. This mode will allow you to select any one of the games to replay. There's only one catch... This mode only unlocks after you discover the at least one alternate ending in Boundless.
Online Leaderboards: Given Boundless is fundamentally a one-player game, we still wanted to included some friendly completion. While playing mini game mode, each game will have its own online leaderboard so you can see how you stack up against the world.
Boss/Mini Boss Battles: Inspired by every good game ever. Be prepared to test your luck against abominations of the universe.
Dynamic Dialogue: We keep reiterating that every decision you make is integral and actually matters.
We believe that many games hold the player's creativity hostage and, by doing so, trivialize the player's overall role in the game. The words the characters use and the interactions between the player and other characters found in game are often times entirely scripted and the player has little to no control over their fate. When this is the case, cutscenes seamlessly transition from enlightening opportunities to engage the player with the story to monotonous bores with little impact on the player. This is not the case with Boundless.
Customizable Weapons and Armor: You can tweak whatever you happen to come up on or salvage in space.
The Conception of Sea Life Studios
In 2013, upon graduating from their respected universities, Chad Hadzinsky & Nicholas Cappelli began collaborating on possible video game projects. They wanted to create a game that really focused on dynamic gameplay and was actually challenging to complete. Monetary constraints led to work obligations which postponed Boundless' development. During this time, Chad and Nic began constructing Boundless' script and storyline, familiarizing themselves with Unreal Engine 4, and purchasing necessary assets to begin transitioning a part time hobby into something greater.
January 1 2017: The Day that Changed it all
The boys decided to take a leap of faith and make Boundless a full-time opportunity. They both left their respective jobs in California and pushed Sea Life Studios and Boundless to the top of their priority list. Given the cost of living can be so expensive, they took Sea Life Studios to Southeast Asia to cut living expenses while they worked to produce a organically unique product.
So... Why Kickstarter??
For the past almost year, we have been working full time on Boundless' development using our own money. It has been difficult financially but we have made it work. Given some funding, we would be able to push out an alpha very soon, and a beta closely following that. We realize if we don't reach our budget goal, we will have to postpone development and pursue other opportunities. We believe Kickstarter is the perfect platform for us to utilize because we want to keep complete control over the unique creative direction of the game, which many major publishers might think is too risky. Our goal is to be the indie diamond in the rough.
In addition, we really hope to appeal to and get feedback from our backers in the gaming community. As you can see in our rewards, we want to give our backers the opportunity to immerse their own unique ideas in our game. We also want to give our most loyal backers the opportunity to test our game through its alpha and beta phases. We are a small team of two and we genuinely value your suggestions, critiques, comments, and questions; and want to use these to make Boundless even better than we could on our own.
Without Kickstarter, our project will not come into fruition. We need your help and we are 100% dedicated to putting a product out there that the gaming community is going to get extremely excited about. Let's make it happen!
Risks and challenges
Boundless: Salvation is an ambitious game and we are a small team of two. Our biggest challenge is funding the development process, however, we are confident that if we reach our goal we can deliver Boundless by our expected release date of Fall 2018.
Here at Sea Life Studios, we are dedicated to delivering you a unique and engaging experience. We are excited to share our alpha and beta testing stages with our loyal backers and allow for their feedback to contribute to the overall production of Boundless: Salvation. We want our backer community to be hands-on and blunt with us so that we can address any issues as they occur.
We hope to receive and respond to all the feedback we can and deliver a clean, finished product. Most of the core gameplay components for Boundless: Salvation are complete. We wanted to make sure we could showcase a game that was more than just pre-rendered cinematic cutscenes.
This is Sea Life Studios' first Kickstarter Campaign and we are fully aware of the expectations and necessary steps to make this game happen. We would love to grow with our community and we are dedicated to delivering the best possible experience for everyone working with us.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
