Hello Friends,
First, I would like to thank all of you who have so generously given financial, technical, emotional and moral support since we began. We could not have gotten this far without you!

I am also excited to share this project with a wider audience and thank you in advance for any support that you are able to give!

The $30,000 goal is the absolute minimum that we need to create a rough cut of the film. The more we raise the more we will be able to accomplish. Specific activities that will be funded as we reach additional goals are listed below.

Also it is important to know if we don't reach the full amount of $30,000 within the 45 days, Kickstarter will not collect the pledged money and NOTHING will go to LIFE AFTER LIFE. So please send what you can, help us reach the $30,000 target – and beyond - within the 45 days.

LIFE AFTER LIFE follows Harrison and Noel, who after committing unthinkable acts as teenagers and being incarcerated for decades, are given a chance at life after life in prison.

Main Funding Goal

The $30,000 Kickstarter goal will empower us to complete an integral portion of the next stage of post-production:

·$8,000 for footage conversion, logging and management

·$2,000 will support partial transcription and translation (chosen interviews only)

·$5,000 for pick-ups and b-roll

·$5,000 for writing / story development

·$10,000 to cover Editor and Director salaries while editing for 2 month period to assemble a 30 min rough cut

Stretch Funding Goals and Activities

If we surpass our goal of $30,000, this is how we will spend the additional funds:

·$20,000 to cover Editor and Director salaries while editing for an additional 4 month period to assemble a rough cut of the full film.

·$20,000 to provide funding for the final assembling of all the various audio and visual components of LIFE AFTER LIFE. Fine cutting itself is the process of getting down to perfect frame accuracy for every single edit in the film, of making sure each moment flows as best it can.

·$20,000 to cover the cost of final finishing on the film. This includes color correction, sound mixing and the score; getting the finishing touches just right.

·$10,000 Educational Curricula – A number of colleges, universities, and even high schools across the country have already requested to purchase LIFE AFTER LIFE upon its completion. This funding will allow us to create a relevant and informative curricula to accompany the educational version and package with the film. This will allow us to provide a sliding scale option for schools and communities with greater funding constraints and higher need.

·$25,000 Speaking Tour – This will allow Director Tamara Perkins along with subjects of the film (when available) to implement a national tour presenting to universities, policy agencies, and community centers. Special consideration for additional tour stops will be given to regions where the number and concentration of funders is greatest (regardless of amount given).

LIFE AFTER LIFE Trailer / Character Introduction

The Story Behind The Story

For many years LIFE AFTER LIFE Director, Tamara Perkins, wore many hats as she worked as a filmmaker, non-profit director, grief support facilitator, and Yoga instructor. As a grief support facilitator, she created safe environments that allow open sharing during sensitive interviews. Tamara began working with incarcerated youth in 2005 as the co-founder of Niroga, a non-profit organization providing yoga and mindfulness practices for youth and adults dealing with trauma. One of Tamara’s mentors, former Alameda County Director of Public Health Arnold Perkins, asked her to teach Yoga at a health fair at San Quentin State Prison. It was there in San Quentin where Tamara first met Noel and Harrison as their Yoga instructor in 2006. A year later, a group of men, leaders in various self-help programs inside San Quentin, discovered Tamara was a filmmaker and asked her to tell their story. Cinematographer and co-producer, Jesse Dana, came on right away and they have been filming with the men and their families both inside San Quentin and in the community since 2007.

LIFE AFTER LIFE Experts

Over 150 hours of intimate footage of the incarcerated men has been gathered. Filmed interviews with experts including Angela Davis, Professor Peter Edelman, US District Court Judge Nancy Gertner, San Francisco Superior Court Judge Katherine Feinstein, and San Quentin Warden Robert Ayers have been captured. The experts will provide a broader insight which will be used in clips on the website and to inform tools that will be built for the educational use packet.

The Team

Director / Producer / Writer
Tamara Perkins is a filmmaker and activist focused on documentaries that inspire dialogue, empower and provide voice for vulnerable communities. She founded Apple of Discord Productions in 2006, producing such films as "Niroga", which profiles a program reaching incarcerated youth through Yoga. As grief support facilitator, Tamara developed programs which train at-risk youth and incarcerated men in filmmaking as a tool for transformation. The National Council on Crime and Delinquency presented Tamara with their 2009 PASS Award for this upcoming documentary.

Cinematographer & Co-Producer
Jesse Dana is an Emmy award winning cinematographer with a decade of experience. His interest in film began with the desire to affect positive social change through media, and was drawn to filmmaking by its potential to create transformative experiences for the audience by broadening their perception. He saw in LIFE AFTER LIFE an opportunity to create such an experience and dramatically change the public’s perspective about incarceration. Jesse Dana has worked alongside Tamara since early 2007 to establish the look and storyline of the film. http://www.jessedana.com

Editor & Co-Producer
Diana J Brodie’s experience as an editor, filmmaker, and instructor spans 25 years. Her extensive portfolio includes editing for Discovery, Logo, National Geographic, and PBS, as well as several feature length documentaries. Diana was introduced to Life After Life through her work as lead editing instructor in the San Quentin Media Project, which trains incarcerated men in filmmaking. http://djbtv.net/

Associate Producer & Development Director
Simron Gill’s interest in film was developed through both her love of photography and a deep-seeded interest in the power of media to highlight and inform social justice issues. She has been a driving force behind Life After Life’s diverse and innovative development and outreach strategy.

Executive Producer
Jeanine Rodgers, co-founder of Apple of Discord Productions, has over 25 years experience in Accounting, currently as a Finance Manager for an international real estate company.   Originally studying Theater Scenic Design, Jeanine has worked with various companies as a Stage Manager and Designer.  It is that background in both the arts and business that she hopes to bring to all Apple of Discord productions.  AOD’s goal is to be the “apple of discord”, highlighting with the beauty of the arts, issues that are often overlooked by mainstream media, to bring on further discussions and changes.

Risks and challenges

Production team members are committed to the successful completion of LIFE AFTER LIFE. When funds are low team members work freelance to support themselves while either donating time or accepting deferment of fees. As you saw in the Kickstarter video, we have come to a point where we must focus on developing, writing and editing the final rough cut of the film. You can help us to make this film a reality sooner rather than later.
