Like all primary school teachers, I teach local history. On visiting the library to get books for my class, however, I learnt that there are, in fact, no children's books about Doncaster. Given Doncaster's rich history (from it's Roman roots through to it building the world's most well-known steam trains), I was surprised this was the case.
So, my quest to produce the first Doncaster children's book began.
My first stop was Doncaster Tourism, who were very keen on the idea and offered their bank of Doncaster photographs for the book. Many friends offered input (many thanks to the 'Church View Writers' Group!) and Doncaster Museum too offered their support.
Next, I looked at the content. I designed a couple of 'kid' characters (Jay and Harry) who take the reader through the book (along with their pet dog). I capitalised on the popularity of the 'Horrible Histories' book by finding out some gross facts about our town, and there are a few puzzles and games to keep the children amused.
Then I wrote, illustrated and designed the book. That took ages.
Another goal of the book is to make children feel proud to come from our town. Hence the 'Doncaster Stars' feature, which gives information on successful people who came from Doncaster (from Thomas Crapper to Ted Hughes to 'One Direction' star Louis Tomlinson).
Initially, I had a publisher interested in the book (The History Press). However, they have since backed out, saying that the cost to print a full colour book is too high for them. I am still determined to produce the book, but cannot myself afford the initial costings... hence why I need you!
Please pre-order a copy of the book or, better still, go for one of the other funding options. In true 'Donny' style... "CHEERS LUV!"
Risks and challenges
As mentioned, I cannot currently afford to publish the book myself. On reaching the 'Kickstarter' goal, I still need to raise more funds. I am going to do this through pre-orders from schools as well as through jobs I have booked in during school holidays (e.g. leading animation workshops). No matter what, the book will be published in the first half of 2014, but please understand if it takes a little longer than specified through 'Kickstarter'.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
