About this project
Islands of Nyne: Battle Royale is an online, competitive, first-person shooter inspired by works such as Battle Royale and The Hunger Games. Drop in. Gear up. Stay alive!
Islands of Nyne: Battle Royale is currently being developed for PC, Mac, and VR with plans for Xbox One and PS4 in the future. The PC version is planned for a December 2016 release on Steam shortly followed by VR and Mac compatible versions.
Combining modern FPS action with the scavenging mechanics of popular survival games, Islands of Nyne: Battle Royale will put your wit and grit to the test in an ultimate challenge of gladiatorial might. Drop into massive arenas and fight it out among ninety-nine other bloodthirsty participants to come out on top. The Nyne will only accept one victor. Do you have what it takes?
Islands of Nyne: Battle Royale features ranked matches, achievements, cosmetic unlockables, and, most importantly, no pay-to-win features. Your skill alone will determine whether you live or die on the Islands of Nyne.
- 100 PLAYERS PER MATCH – kill, outrun, or consort your way to victory amongst 99 other players in timed matches that last up to 30 minutes. Match pace is set by a damage-inducing plasma field that is released from the perimeter of the map in stages, funneling players into progressively tighter combat situations.
- 3 LARGE-SCALE MAPS – designed by a technologically superior alien race, each arena is engineered to provide a unique and obstacle-ridden battlefield for players, designed to reward strategic thinking and tactical decision making.
- A FULL, COMPETITIVE RANKING SYSTEM – play against others at your skill level and win bigger payouts. Advance in rank, unlock special tier armor and distinguish yourself from the rest as an elite.
- MULTIPLE GAME MODES – not everyone’s a lone wolf. Team up with a friend in Doubles mode or queue up as a team in 5-Man.
- SKILL-BASED REWARDS – earn rare armor sets, weapon skins, game credits, and more depending on how long you can outlast the competition. Receive bonus items and unlock special achievements for actively engaging others or recording impressive stats.
- PLAYER BETTING SYSTEM – use in-game credits to place bets on individual players or teams. Think your friend can finish in the top 10? Make things interesting and turn your faith in them into profit... or loss. Spend those hard earned winnings on fancy armor pieces or weapon skin unlocks.
In Islands of Nyne: Battle Royale, you play as a human chosen by the alien race known as the Nyne to fight in the bloodsport of Battle Royale. Alongside ninety-nine other players, you’ll be transported to one of the Nyne’s floating island arenas. There, you’ll need to scavenge for your weapons, ammo, medkits, and armor, all while avoiding falling into the sights of any other Battle Royale participants. Per the Nyne’s sadistic tendencies, only one participant can survive. Hiding is not an option. As the game progresses, you and your enemies will be gradually forced into smaller and smaller zones by the Nyne’s deadly plasma field. If you find yourself outside the plasma field when it activates, you will slowly be vaporized to death.
Players are placed at random over the arena map and dropped in. You'll have limited control over your movements, but with some careful maneuvering, you’ll be able to slightly alter where you land. Some areas will have a higher rate of item spawns; risk it all on these popular areas, or land on the outskirts for a more covert approach.
As soon as you land, you'll have to search nearby landmarks for weapons, ammo, medkits, armor, and vehicles. Spawning locations are randomized in each landmark, so each match is truly a test of strategy and speed rather than memorizing the map. You'll need to find as much as you can to defend yourself from others or venture out and hunt them down.
A few minutes after everyone has touched down, the announcer will begin the countdown for plasma field convergence. The safe zone will be displayed as a green circle on your map; anything inside the circle is safe and everything outside will be slowly vaporized. The safe zones, much like the weapon and item spawn locations, are randomized every match.
The arenas were created solely for Battle Royale by the Nyne. These floating domes are the remnants of a fractured planet. There are three unique arenas, each with its own specialized terrain and decorated with landmarks ranging from familiar Earth architecture such as Mayan temples, military bases, and modern urbanscapes to surreal alien landscapes completely unfamiliar to earth. Inside of these points of interest you'll find weapons and items that will help you stay alive, provided you find them before someone finds you.
The game has an inventory system that limits the amount of weapons and items you can carry, so you’ll need to be selective about the loot you find scattered around the arena. Players you’ve killed will be lootable so you can take their items and assemble your very own weapons and armor stockpile.
The Battle Royale arena is broken down into grids which you’ll be able to view on your map. While your HUD will show you what grid you're in and your compass will show what direction you are facing, you’ll need to use the nearby landmarks to determine your exact location. It is important that you get your bearings quickly, as eventually the encroaching plasma field will kill you if you are not in the safe zone indicated on your map.
The plasma field will release from the corners of the map and close in until it reaches the outer edges of the circular safe zone. Once the plasma field has closed in completely, a new safe zone will be randomly assigned inside the current safe zone. This process will continue until the plasma field encompasses the entire map, leaving only a tiny area for the last few gladiators to fight it out.
This game is solely created and balanced around the Battle Royale game play you know and love. Maps, weapons, vehicles, mechanics will all be balanced according to this game type and won't be hindered by being an add-on mode like in other titles. With the universe we have set up here, the possibilities are absolutely endless.
Islands of Nyne: Battle Royale uses a point-based ranking system where points are awarded based on your in-match rank at the time of your death. By adopting familiar aspects of popular leaderboards and other ranking systems, your progression is easy to chart, even for those new to competitive FPS gaming.
There are five tiers in Islands of Nyne: Battle Royale: Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond. Each of these tiers is subdivided into five divisions, with V being the lowest tier and I being the highest. All players start off in the bottom-most tier, Bronze V. Every one hundred points you earn will bump you up a tier.
We will be listening very closely to player feedback when the ranking system goes live in order to craft the optimal competitive and balanced experience.
Bragging rights aren’t the only thing you’ll earn as you ascend the rank of Islands of Nyne: Battle Royale. Certain cosmetic armor sets and weapon skins can only be unlocked when you move up the ladder to a new rank. These armor sets are called tier sets. When you enter a new division, you’ll unlock a piece of that division’s tier set. You'll continue to unlock pieces of the set as you rank up from V to I, with the entire set unlocked at tier I. The armor sets are initially quite simplistic at lower tiers and gradually grow more impressive as you rank up. The sets are designed to be instantly recognizable from the battlefield while ensuring that any particular set doesn’t give players an unfair camouflaging advantage.
Ranked is divided into 3 categories
- 1. Solo Mode - You and ninety-nine other players are dropped into the arena. It’s every person for themselves in an all-out, bloody deathmatch. The match continues until only one player remains. Depending on when you die in the match, you will either gain or lose points that affect your rank. You can invite up to four friends to play with you in this mode, but cannot drop in beside them.
- Team Doubles - You and one of your friends drop into the arena together and land next to each other. You’ll need to battle it out against forty-nine other teams of two to emerge victorious. If your partner dies, you will be able to revive them by running to a designated revival point. Once inside the revival area, you must wait a given amount of time to bring back your fallen comrade. However, during this time, your exact location will be broadcast to competing teams via a small beam of light. Dead partners will be able to spectate the game via the living partner’s first person view, thus preventing dead partners from helping the living partner with an extra set of eyes.
- 5 Man - You and four of your friends drop in together and land next to each other. The 5 Man Mode plays out similarly to Team Doubles, but with twenty teams of five all vying for survival.
Casual gives you a chance to practice tactics and strategy in a relatively more low-key environment. You’ll still be up against ninety-nine other players, but you won’t earn or lose any ranked points in this mode. Just like in the Ranked Solo mode, you can invite up to four of your friends to play with you in this mode.
On the character profile page you'll be able to customize your character and show off your achievements by choosing your armor and weapon skins. You'll also be able to check all of your stats, your current rank, and your achievements from the character profile page. Plus, if you’re curious about your fellow gladiators, you can check out their profiles to see what they've accomplished. If you're serious about stats like we are, the player profile page features every possible stat you can imagine.
Think your friend or favorite streamer has what it takes to come in first place? How about getting over 5 kills in a game? Research player stats and match history to evaluate potential players to bet on through their betting profiles. If you have a good feeling about an upcoming match, listen to your intuition and place a small or large bet on a potential victor. Before placing a bet, you'll be shown that player's odds on a variety of possible feats they may or may not accomplish. The lower the odds, the higher the payout.
To keep you on your toes, each match plays out slightly differently. One of the myriad of ways we are striving to keep the Islands of Nyne: Battle Royale experience novel is through the use of different weapon sets. In a match, you’re just as likely to find modern day weaponry like M4s and AKs as you are to stumble across World War II era weapons like the Kar98k, M1 Garand, or M1A1 Thompson. From medieval weaponry to futuristic Nyne technology, Islands of Nyne: Battle Royale will allow you to explore head-smashing, brain-blasting violence from every era.
After a certain amount of time in a match, players will be alerted to events occurring around the arena. Event locations are indicated by vertical beams of light. If you’re feeling daring, you can choose to head to the event location to search for special weapons, a vehicle, or supplies. But you’ll need to stay alert as you likely won’t be the only one tempted by the extra weaponry. Whether you take the risk or play it safe is up to you.
As you play the game, you will earn credits that you can use to unlock tons of cosmetic items such as armor sets weapon and armor skins, weapon attachments (kill trackers), unique taunts, and so on.
From killing fifteen people in a match to nailing a headshot from a thousand feet away, achievements will earn you extra credits to spend on unlockables. Complete some of the really difficult tasks and you may even earn special weapon skins and armor sets!
Place in the top ten in a match for a chance to unlock exclusive rare weapon skins and armor sets. First place winners take home a Champion of the Nyne case that can contain extremely rare gear.
What is Battle Royale if not for the proximity chat you know and love? Form an alliance, make enemies, or troll to your heart’s content; the choice is yours.
We are currently working on a VR version of Islands of Nyne which is included in the Steam Early Access digital copy. However it will be released at a later date and will be compatible with both the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. Imagine aiming down sights with the touch controllers to snipe your opponents from afar or tossing a grenade through a window and dismembering anyone inside. We hope the VR Mode will further immerse players in the universe that is Islands of Nyne: Battle Royale.
Everyone hates a cheater. Heck, even cheaters hate cheaters because they sometimes cheat better than they do. Since we’re building a game so heavily focused on ranks, progression, and unlockables, we take cheating very seriously. As such, we'll be implementing GameBlocks’ FairFight to ensure that cheaters don't ruin your experience. If you've played Battlefield 4, Titanfall, or Rainbow Six Siege you know just how effective Fairfight is at quickly banning cheaters.

Define Human Studios
New to the scene and dissatisfied with the slow progress and profit-focused efforts of many AAA developers, DH Studios have dedicated themselves to creating a fresh take on the shooter genre while staying true to their core values as PC gamers. Both competitive gamers and science fiction nuts, Co-founders Rob Logan and Jake Tolton have had Islands of Nyne: Battle Royale brewing in their heads for quite some time. With backgrounds in game design, they decided to take matters into their own hands and partner up with developer Matima Combined Dimensions to deliver a game they've always wanted to make.
Risks and challenges
As with game development or any type of project, there is always an element of risk involved. There are a lot of variables at play and we at Define Human Studios are doing our very best to turn most of those variables into constants.
Thus far, we have self-funded the game; we have put our livelihoods on the line to bring the game to this point. Not delivering the game just isn’t an option for us, not when we’ve come this far. We have put together an incredible team of talented individuals from all over the world. We are not only passionate gamers, we are passionate developers and artists. We’ve all wanted to see a game really focus on honing the Battle Royale experience and with your support, we will deliver.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
No. We believe that method of monetization is unethical, especially when it comes to buying items that give you an unfair advantage over other players. The only thing that will separate you from the competition in Islands of Nyne is skill. All of the unlockable items featured in-game are cosmetic changes ONLY. You unlock them with keys which you can buy with the credits you earn in-game. However, we are also playing around with the idea of giving players the option of buying keys with real money as well a la CSGO. These are some of the decisions you guys can help make for us by giving us feedback once we roll out the Pre-Alpha and Alpha.
