'Selkie' is a dark, adult fairytale, set in the distant past, based on an ancient Celtic myth, telling the story of a beautiful sea creature who finds herself enslaved to a drunken fisherman when he finds her shedded skin on the beach. Refusing to return her skin to her, the Selkie law of nature means she is now bound to him as his 'land wife' unable to return to her true form, and to the sea. Until one day, many years later, she exacts her revenge and finally is able to transform back into her true form..
SO WHO ARE WE?! We are a small team of passionate creatives, each highly skilled in his or her own field, with years of experience working on other people projects, helping to realise other peoples visions, and this is our chance to create something amazing ourselves, and we are all incredibly excited about it. We are putting our own money into this project too, as much as we can afford!
Our aim for this film is to create something truly unique and memorable, a dark and haunting adult fairy tale, with a spectacular creature transformation sequence, all shot in Medieval locations with gorgeous cinematography, mostly using natural light.
So we drafted in the superb concept artist Danny Mcmahon http://www.facebook.com/malignantdesign to design from scratch the look of the Selkie creature.
Here are a couple of sneak peaks of the initial design - don't want to spoil it by posting the complete final image - this is for people who pledge!
I have always been an avid supporter of special effects make up in horror and fantasy films, and with the advent of CGI, this is a diminishing skill. This film uses REAL special effects and is largely where the money will be spent! We are creating a transformation sequence from woman to sea creature and we're lucky to have old skool SFX artist Robbie Drake on board! He is doing this for free because he could not resist the challenge of creating such a strange beast - both beautiful and monstrous. Find more out about Robbie and his impressive list of credentials here - we know we are in good hands with Robbie. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2107667/?ref_=fn_al_nm_1
Spinning the gold together is our DIRECTOR SIMON BOOTH - and yes he is my brother. Graduating with a degree in Film from University of Westminster, Simons first self funded short film, 'Double' was screened at the London Film Festival (and others), and since then he has worked as cinematographer and / or director on short films, commercials, independent feature films, and music videos, including the latest video for British punk pop legend Toyah Willcox, for the track 'Fallen'.
Like me, Simon is a huge horror film fan, but with a serious filmmaking background and training, a love of European cinema, and great skills in lighting and cinematography, he is going to be crafting a dark, stylish, cinematic vision for the film.
Playing the lead role of the cruel fisherman is the broodingly handsome Joseph Rye - and here he is:

Then there's me too! I came up with the original idea for SELKIE, I am producing the film as well as playing the lead role of SELKIE.
I have been working in the horror film 'industry' as both actress, writer and TV presenter since the late 90's with my first film PERVIRELLA followed by my first horror in 2001 CRADLE OF FEAR. These movies were followed by bigger acting roles in the now cult UK flicks Evil Aliens, and Doghouse. I have presented many UK TV shows on the subject of cult movies including Channel 5's OUT THERE, Bravos' SHOCK MOVIE MASSACRE and I'm currently the face of the Horror Channel. For tons of clips and full biog head over to my website http://www.emilybooth.co.uk/main/
I am a huge fan of horror as well journalist and TV reporter - but this is the FIRST TIME I am creating something myself. I did study FILM at the prestigious GOLDSMITHS university - but as I carved out a career as an actress and TV presenter it is not until now I am able to unleash my creative juices! And unleash them I will.
MUSIC & SCORE
We are lucky enough to have an original score being made for the film by the brilliant partnership of BEV LEE HARLING and FRANK MOON once musicians in the popular http://www.mediaevalbaebes.com/ Bev now writes her own music with Frank and has been signed up! They have that unusual quality of mixing folk, world music and strange instruments together to create an amazing sound. Frank has recently directed the music for Kafkas Metamorphosis for the English national Opera! Bev Lee Harling - a goddess in her own rights will be providing the haunting vocals - get a glimpse of her music here! http://www.bevleeharling.com/
'Selkie' will have a mythical, timeless, fairytale feel and as we are filming in an authentically medieval building, we have to cover location hire. Our aim for this film in the long term is to see it on the big screen at Horror & Fantasy film festivals, such as Frightfest, and on TV on the Horror Channel UK where I'm confident we can get it screened. If you want to see something bizarre, bold and unforgettable - pledge now and reap the rewards!
Risks and challenges
The major challenges of this film lay in being able to create a really incredible transformation sequence, with the final Selkie creature looking both beautiful and monstrous. But Robbie Drake is very experienced with prosthetic make up effects, and has done some amazing work, and we have spent a long time working on this, planning it, working out what is achievable, and he has already made a number of body casts in preparation for this.
The other challenge has been finding authentic locations to film in, which offer good natural light. But we have found two amazing places we can film in, both are totally intact and preserved beautiful Medieval buildings, with so much character and detail, they will add so much to the film.
So the two biggest hurdles have already been overcome.
The rest now lies in the execution of the makeup, but we are in great hands with Robbie, and it has all been worked out very carefully, and it will be amazing!
We are hiring some period costumes from the National Theatre, and some props as well, as its important to get all the details right.
The only challenges on this kind of project now are organisational ones!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
