About

Originally discovered in an iceberg careening through the ocean currents, Cave Bro has been set free. And boy is he hungry. I mean, who wouldn’t be hungry after being frozen for thousands of years? Cave Bro is no longer in the Stone Age, so he’ll need someone to teach him how to eat right and stay fit in modern times. That’s where you come in.

Cave Bro is an engaging and entertaining mobile game designed to help kids become more active and teach them about nutrition and exercise along the way. You’ll begin by customizing your Cave Bro (or Bro-ette) avatar with various hairstyles, clothing choices, etc. Then you'll give him a cool name. (We call ours Ooga.) Now you're ready to interact with your character, making him grunt, swing his club and even dance.

In order to keep him alive and healthy, you’ll need to feed and play with him daily. Make the right nutrition choices and you’ll earn coins to buy a few homey touches for his rockin’ cave. Stuff him full of pizza, soda or cookies and his life becomes a wreck (which is still fun). Just don’t neglect Cave Bro or he’ll eventually pack up his cool stuff and go back to the Stone Age.

In order to feed Cave Bro, you’ll choose the Eat! Option. This will take you to a new screen where players are encouraged to enter in their own height, weight, age and gender in order to base the game’s caloric intake and nutritional information on them. Or, you can skip this option and the experience will default to a standard 2,000 calorie diet. Cave Bro will have a variety of options to choose from for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks.

You can mimic what you’re eating on a daily basis, or you can feed him whatever you select for the day. Either way we’ll provide the basic dietary information about each food. For example, if you feed Ooga a banana – the whole banana will be broken down into a pie chart representing the sugars, carbs, fiber, fats, proteins, etc. that make up the fruit. You can select each section of the pie chart, which will describe each section and how it affects your health.

You’ll get to watch Cave Bro eat everything you feed him. Excessive eating, unbalanced diets and bad choices will make him lazy, fat or unhealthy. Be careful, he also gets a bad attitude and could end up clubbing the table or losing his lunch. Good choices make him happier and healthier while earning coins to deck out Cave Bro and his cool cave.

To exercise with Cave Bro, you’ll select the Play! option. If you’re using a smartphone, you can use Cave Bro as a fitness app, take him along on a walk or run and track your distance, calories burned and time spent.

Players can also choose physical activities they participate in on a regular basis such as basketball, dance recitals or band practice. Enter these activities in the log and the calories burned will directly impact Cave Bro’s physical health. Constant feedback let’s you know that a fat and grouchy Cave Bro needs more exercise and a fit and healthy Bro reaps the rewards.

The exercise and nutrition inputs work together to determine Cave Bro’s current health and happiness. Run more and Cave Bro might need to eat more carbs. Sit around and those extra snacks start to pack on the muffin top.

Challenge your friends, compare stats or maybe start a group competition. Reaching this goal allows us to build a social community and the ability to store the data needed to create a social gaming experience. Other planned functionality includes:

• Additional game levels, characters and decorations for Cave Bro and his cave

• Nutritional tracking with expanded database of popular foods

• Reflection logs to monitor nutrition and exercise

• Additional nutrition mini-games

Cave Bro was born as an idea for the online physical education course at Florida Virtual School. But we quickly realized two things. First, this was too important to keep for just FLVS students. Kids everywhere are in need of better fitness and nutrition habits. Second, working with a public school budget meant we could afford to thaw him out, but to really bring him to life and give kids control of his actions (and their fitness) we needed some funding help. That’s why we’ve brought Cave Bro to Kickstarter, so you can help us bring him to people of all ages, all over the modern world. We are in the process of working with Fablevision to build the next generation, fully-playable prototype and with your contributions we can afford to fund the completion of Cave Bro phase 1. Of course if you help us spread the word and drum up enough support to surpass our goal, we'll jump right into  Phase 2 and take Cave Bro to the next level.

It takes a lot people to bring Cave Bro to life so he can help kids improve nutrition and exercise habits. Our FLVS development team includes 60+ talented artists, designers, developers, writers and education experts. Here are a few of the key players on this project:

Mike Jarrell: As lead artist and game designer for Cave Bro, Mike combines his gaming experience and artistic talents with his passion for student success. He’s the creator and author of several popular app store titles including Nightlings.

Joe Greaser: Part project manager and part instructional designer, Joe will insure the teaching is sound and the project is on schedule. He’s also part caveman, so he’ll do most of it in grunts.

Adrienne Campbell: Former college tennis player turned education innovator, Adrienne brings her fitness and nutrition knowledge to the project, along with classroom teaching experience and a deep understanding of game design and pedagogy.

TD Haines: Before he was creating games, writing algorithms and teaching high school physics, TD was living up to his name on the gridiron. He’ll be spending most of his time on this project making sure the game mechanics are solid and Cave Bro scores big with kids.

Miranda Bacha: She's a teacher. She's a student (currently pursuing 2 different doctoral degrees). She's a gaming science and research guru. No wonder she's our go-to for game design best practices.

John Logan: This former Disney executive leads the FLVS curriculum innovation team, bringing 20 years of award-winning work to his role on this project as creative director and critical eye.

Risks and challenges

Just like any project, this one comes with various risks and challenges we’ll try to mitigate. The most common risk in projects like this is scope. We don’t know the exact extent of the work until we start developing. FLVS has been developing digital educational content for 17 years and we have a great track record for judging project scope accurately, but it’s still a risk we’ll keep an eye on. The second risk we face is unknown technology challenges. Sometimes systems don’t play well together and this project involves integration of multiple hardware, software and system solutions. Not to mention that Cave Bro has big dreams. We’re confident in our project plan, but take a tip from your mutual fund provider and please be aware that past success is no indication of future results.
