About this project
An Enduring Legacy
Hi, I'm Daniel S. Thompson, sculptor of the Ron Paul Bust. I made this sculpture to honor Dr. Paul, and with the hope that it would continue to represent the philosophy of Liberty (through the personality of one of it's greatest champions) through the ages. This project is about seeing my clay version of Ron Paul's image turned into bronze via the lost wax process, and presenting the first finished bronze sculpture in this edition to Dr. Paul personally, with a book full of the names of each project participant, on their behalf.
This project also serves to launch the edition as a whole, to place it as far and wide a possible. As I told a friend recently, my hope is that Americans - especially young Americans - will encounter one of these bronze portraits and ask "Who was this man?" and in the process of finding out, discover the wellspring of Liberty within their own hearts and minds - today, and for generations to come.
Funds raised will go to offset the very high production, shipping and installation costs associated with bronze, as well as the production of the rewards you will receive for pledging. Should we meet our kickstarter goal, we will see the first sculpture in this edition cast in bronze and presented to Dr. Paul - with as many of his supporters as possible on the list of project donors, which will be formally presented to him as well.
Our larger goal is to see the remainder of this edition of bronzes placed where they will spark discussion and provide inspiration. To that end, all funds over and above the minimum goal will be put toward reaching out to various institutions - schools, universities, libraries, public buildings - and funding the process of bronze casting, shipping and installing these works where they will long be seen and admired by a constant stream of Americans.
You Can Help
So please, pledge at the highest level you can (and receive some unique and collectible artwork, as a reward for doing so). But even more importantly, share this opportunity with others, and invite all your friends to share the opportunity to be a part of this project, during the next 30 days. Go to https://www.facebook.com/TheRonPaulBust?fref=ts, to see updates, photos and videos of the project as I complete your rewards in my studio, and invite your friends to do the same - and invite them to "share"! Every decision to share this project with your friends, on social media, via email, or by word of mouth, can have a powerful effect. Together, we can turn this clay into bronze!
Risks and challenges
The foundry I've chosen to cast this series is perhaps one of the finest in North America, if not the world - Valley Bronze of Oregon. I've had the privilege of working with them during my time as a copyist, when I made monumental enlargements, and reductions, for other bronze artists. They are a supremely skilled and reliable organization of master craftsmen - many of them fine artists in their own right. So I anticipate no difficulties whatsoever on their end.
As I launch this project, I have made the mold from the original clay model, and am now casting waxes to produce the full-sized bronze and the 1/2 size reduction. I am currently sketching the design for the other, commemorative items as well. Photos of this process will appear on the "Ron Paul Bust" Facebook page, both during and after the kickstarter appeal. Barring any major disaster, all should go according to plan and on schedule. The process of casting alone will take at least 6 weeks (I'll be linking on the Facebook site to a video of the lost wax process, showing the many steps and man-hours needed to create each piece). This is why the delivery of all rewards associated with the Project has been set as far out as June - but they could arrive far sooner than that, especially in the case of the simpler, graphic items. All these items - including the screen printing, drawings and cold-cast marble sculpture - will be created by my own hands, in my studio, and shipped by me personally. I am absolutely capable of, and committed to, delivering all rewards to participants in a timely manner.
A minor challenge: while bronze items will ship from Oregon to the contiguous United States, my studio is in Devon, England, and due to the fact that I'm a resident here (I came across the pond to marry my wife), kickstarter wants all money denominated in British Pounds. Don't be intimidated by this - just look for "currency converter" via your search engine to determine the US dollar amount, which will be a bit higher.
A Final Word
After I first modeled this sculpture in clay, it was "on the back burner" until I decided to make it my Facebook profile picture for awhile. When only three friends "shared" it with their friends list, I was deluged with extravagant praise, many urging me to do what had been my wish from the start, and what we're doing now: to have the work cast in bronze and presented as a gift to Dr. Paul. This project has already taken on a life of it's own. If, in the next 30 days, we jump into action, pledge generously and share this project widely, we can not only honor Dr. Paul with this gift, and a book packed full of names of those who pledged, but we can also place these images of Dr. Paul, a tireless champion of our nation's enduring Liberty, in places of honor throughout the nation.
Thank you all, for being a part of this project!
