About

In 1980, the Royal Air Force issued the Newmark Chronograph to its aircrew. Just 500 at most were ever built. Vulcan, Harrier, Sea-King and Tornado crew would count amongst those who relied upon their Newmark.

In 2018, the Newmark Chronograph is back. A worthy successor to the original, the Newmark 6BB retains vintage charm but with modern updates.

And this time it is available to everyone…it's a watch suitable for the younger or the older, a watch with heritage, a watch fit for purpose, a watch for those who appreciate value with functionality.

The roots of the Newmark Chronograph date back to 1969 and the UK Ministry of Defence requirement for a Chronograph with the specifications of DEFSTAN 66-4 (Part 2). Over the next twelve or thirteen years, four companies, Hamilton, CWC, Newmark and Precista would supply watches to the British Armed Forces. These watches were designed to be rugged, reliable and equally as important - legible.

They were the epitome of form follows function, military watches at their purest. In 1983, British Military Chronographs were updated to Seiko quartz models; more reliable without doubt but lacking the vintage feel (and distinctive shape) of the originals which were to become known as 'The Fabulous Four':

In the years since the Fabulous Four were decommissioned, all have become highly collectible and only three have been remade in one form or another. Until now, the rarest of these iconic watches, the Newmark, was the only one never to be reproduced. After almost two years of development, the Newmark 6BB is ready to fly again.

We have put together 4 reward levels for our campaign as you will see below. These range from the basic package for Earlybirds to the Limited Low Serial with a special memento - a vane from a Rolls Royce RB199 jet engine used to power the Tornado aircraft. This is inscribed with our logo, the unique serial number of the watch, and of course - a Tornado!

PLEASE NOTE: The Ltd Low Serial watches are restricted to one per backer. Thanks for your understanding.

The story of our Newmark 6BB started in the summer of 2016. Why was it that the Newmark chronograph had never been remade in any form? We pondered this question and set to work on finding out. The answer was quite simple: nobody had thought to do it!

Perhaps there was an opportunity to create a modern version of this classic watch and offer it at a fraction of the cost of an original. We decided to go for it! We weren't designing a watch from scratch so the objective was to produce something as close to the original as possible.

But what we also wanted to do was to produce a watch that was more accurate, more reliable and required less maintenance than the original. All we had to work from were photographs and measurements taken from brief access to an original example.

After an exhaustive search (and one or two false starts) a manufacturer was found who understood what we wanted to achieve and the detail that we needed to go into.

Every aspect of the watch was addressed with countless hours spent studying where we could tweak here and there to get things just right.

We couldn't simply choose catalogue parts, we had to recreate most aspects of the watch starting with our measurements and a blank piece of paper.

The only component of the Newmark 6BB not specially designed and manufactured was the movement.

The result of our efforts was translated into 3D models with which we were happy and so a second round of prototypes were given the go ahead.

Finally, in June 2018 after a journey of a year and a half, our final prototypes arrived and they looked and felt just right - we had done it.

Just to make double sure we showed them to Wing Commander Mel James OBE who was in charge of engineering for the Vulcan fleet back in 1982 and the Falklands campaign - Mel gave them the thumbs up which was good enough for us!

The case of the Newmark 6BB is very distinctive being asymmetrical - designed to protect the crown and the chronograph pushers. We are proud to have achieved a case that feels 'just right' when being worn.

Constructed from 316L stainless steel, it features a minimal bezel giving the dial prominence and meaning that the watch wears larger than its dimensions would suggest. The lugs curve gracefully as they should meaning that the watch sits comfortably on the wrist.

Turn the 6BB over and the screw down caseback follows the profile of the original watch beautifully; all you will see here are the Newmark logo and a (unique to each watch) serial number. In addition, you'll see the NATO Stock Number (NSN) issued to the Newmark 6BB by the British Ministry of Defence: 6645-99-870-5073.

It seemed only right that the 2018 Newmark should be available for procurement by NATO forces as was the original - this number is the real thing. We felt that without it, the watch would be incomplete.

The whole case is finely brushed top and bottom - reflecting the 6BB's tool watch intentions, reducing glare and being relatively easily to refinish if necessary.

To give the wearer some choice, we have equipped the 6BB with standard stainless steel spring-bars; this means that you are free to wear the watch on practically any strap you wish.

Almost equally distinctive as the case is the crown of the 6BB. It would have been easy to pick an off the shelf crown but our obsession with detail meant that this was not even a consideration.

We spent a lot of time getting it right. From the number of teeth (24) to the inner bevel (unique to the original Newmark), we have made sure that the crown looks just as it should. The practical design means that it is easy to grip the crown for setting the time.

Once again a bespoke component, we have fitted the 6BB with a period specification domed acrylic crystal to maintain originality. Holding the crystal in place is a polished steel tension ring, just as there should be.

The military preferred acrylic because it would flex under pressure and not shatter in the cockpit of an aircraft.

As well the above, acrylic was chosen by us because of its 'warmth', its vintage feel and the slight but pleasing distortions it makes when the watch is viewed at certain angles.

Acrylic will scratch but it is easily polished with a compound such as Polywatch or even toothpaste. Also, as your 6BB ages and gets those inevitable marks and scratches, then the acrylic crystal will age with the watch.

Legibility in all respects defines the dial of the 6BB. Finished in velvet black with matt white numerals, one glance is all it takes to see the time in all conditions.

The sub-dials have the correct concentric circles and we rightly kept the velvet finish for these too instead of the glossy effect seen on some chronographs.

The dial numerals and Newmark logo have been painstakingly recreated from the original to ensure that the 6BB looks today, just as it did in 1980.

We've upgraded the lume and the 'Circle L' seen under the logo denotes the use of Luminova - to be more precise, Super Luminova C3 - under low light conditions the pleasing green glow maintains the legibility of a dial designed by the UK military many decades ago.

There's no date indicator on the 6BB - the military didn't specify it so we haven't.

Designed to replicate the original and manufactured to exacting dimensions, the 6BB's hands are manufactured from sand-blasted steel and match the dial perfectly.

The frosted finish captures and reflects any available light and this, coupled with the thick application of Super Luminova C3 on the hours and minutes hands means that you'll never need to look twice at your 6BB.

The chronograph centre seconds hand remains stationary until you activate the timer, likewise the hand on the left hand sub dial - this one will measure to 60 minutes. On the right sub dial is a continuous 24hour indicator.

All powered by a state of the art engine.

The Newmark 6BB is powered by the Seiko VK64A Meca Quartz movement. This was chosen after careful consideration of what we wanted to achieve with the watch in terms of size, functionality, reliability and ease of ownership.

Other movements were considered but rejected due to potential reliability issues, size issues or supply issues.

The VK64 is a quartz movement with a mechanically actuated chronograph. What this means is that the engagement and disengagement of the chronograph (although it is quartz) is achieved through the use of levers and cams - just like the old days.

The icing on the cake is that the central chronograph seconds hand ticks five times per second - again, like the movements of old.

Given that the VK64 has no constant seconds hand, then there is no outward indication that it is in fact a quartz watch. And being quartz, your 6BB will be reliable, accurate and rugged.

We're pleased to be using a Seiko movement - after all, Seiko movements went on to power British military watches in the mid-1980s and 1990s.

With a battery life of three years (with one hour's chronograph use per day), the VK64 will see your 6BB through thick and thin - quietly, reliably and accurately.

The Newmark 6BB comes complete with one or more high quality RAF pattern 20mm straps.

The RAF pattern refers to a true one-piece strap without the 'underloop' featured on many military watch straps. This means that the watch will sit slightly lower on your wrist and also that the buckle can be positioned wherever you wish on the underside of your wrist.

Our straps are of the highest quality and because we chose to equip the 6BB with removable spring bars, you are of course free to fit the watch with whatever strap you choose at a later date.

The Earlybird comes with one strap in Admiralty Grey.

The Standard Issue comes with both the Admiralty Grey and a leather backed Cordura strap in Khaki with moveable keeper.

The Ltd Low Serial comes with both the above straps and in addition two further colourways: RAF colours with heavy duty hardware and the 'Speedbird' strap - a nod to British civil aviation and to the Speedbird watch Ewan Wilson reviewed back in 2001.

We have to be honest - when it came to the Newmark 6BB we didn't want to become involved in Peli cases, fancy packaging or watch rolls. We wanted to concentrate our efforts on the watch itself.

We wanted to keep things simple and in the military style.

So your Early Bird or Standard Issue watch will come in a small, light brown cardboard box.

The watch will be wrapped in military grade VCI (volatile corrosion inhibitor) paper just as the original would have been when in storage and sealed with a sticker bearing the model number and NATO Stock Number.

The LTD Low Serial series will come in a larger cardboard box to accommodate the extra straps and Tornado jet engine vane.

All very simple and fit for purpose.

Each watch will of course come with an information/instruction manual and guarantee card.

We will be shipping the Newmark 6BB worldwide by the most suitable method depending on the country in question.

All shipping will be trackable and require a signature.

Shipping is free for all backers.

Watches will be sent from the UK and whilst we fully understand that backers will be eager to receive their watches as quickly as possible, please be patient. Once watches have left us then we are in the hands of the delivery service concerned.

Please understand that for any countries outside of the EU, any customs duties or import taxes arising at the time of delivery are the responsibility of the backer and are out of our control. These will need to be paid by the backer if they occur.

Any VAT due on pledges from the UK and EU will be paid by us for backers from those countries. We will neither add or deduct any form of tax on dispatch.

Each Newmark 6BB will be guaranteed for a period of 2 years from the date of shipping.

The guarantee covers defects in materials or workmanship. Within the 2 year period, repair or replacement of parts will be performed free of charge except in the case of damage caused by accidents or lack of care.

The guarantee does not cover:

  • The crystal, strap and battery.
  • Damage to the case, crown and pushers (including scratches) resulting from mishandling (including within water) or abuse.
  • Damage resulting from unauthorised alteration, manipulation or repair.

I am Ewan Wilson and as a team, me and my wife Sureerat have been involved in the watch world for over 14 years; prior to this, my interest in watches stems back some 40 years during the early mass production of quartz.

Since around 2000, I have on occasion published watch reviews online via my own website; in particular, these reviews have focused on smaller brands which took my interest.

We are based near Cheltenham in the UK, literally a stone’s throw from the old Smiths watch factory where the military issue 'G10' of the late 1960s was produced. In fact, I grew up alongside the children of workers at the factory, perhaps not appreciating at the time how the world of watches would become a real interest in the years ahead.

For whatever reason, until 2016 I had never considered the idea of producing a watch and was content with writing the odd review now and again. I certainly wouldn’t have wanted to just ‘think of a name’ to put on a watch dial; there had to be a reason to do something, and that something had to be worthwhile.

We feel privileged to have the opportunity of bringing the Newmark name back to the world of watches.

Which brings us to today, this campaign and the Newmark 6BB!

Please share our campaign, we'd appreciate it...

Risks and challenges

We understand that once our funding goal is reached then we have an important responsibility to you to ensure that we fulfil rewards and keep you fully updated with all news and progress as we work toward shipping rewards on time.

So that is exactly what we will do - we will make sure that you are kept informed with any developments, no matter how small, that take place after the campaign has ended.

We have purposely kept the 6BB project as simple as possible both from the product and logistics perspectives. We will be personally overseeing and checking continually as production progresses and we haven't set over-optimistic timelines. Every watch and strap will be personally inspected by us to ensure they are of the standard that we ourselves would expect.

If, for any reason there should be a production delay then you will be notified and the reason given - it's as simple as that.

It's the least we can do in return for your faith in our project.
