The original British plug was a brilliant design at the time of invention. However, it is too bulky and lacks some required modern features for today's ultra-thin, power-hungry mobile devices. Does this look familiar to you?
While many have tried to improve the design of British Plug, we felt none really strikes a good balance between size, ease of use and features.
Introducing Flip, a thinner modern-day update to the British plug by OneAdaptr. Not only Flip is a third of the standard British plug’s size, it has USB ports and power bank for today’s high-tech mobile devices.
The folding design made it possible to reduce the thickness while retaining the functionality. You can really see the difference by comparing below picture to the picture where the original British plug was used.
An added benefit of the flip design is that the pins are hidden away when not in use. This protects other items when stored with Flip:
Operating Flip is easy: simply press the button, lock the pin and you are ready to go
There are three versions of Flip:
Duo’s emphasis is on a compact size, while Quad and Power are for power users. Duo comes with 2 USB ports and is the smallest of the three.
It is thinner and easier to carry than the original British Plug, fitting everywhere.
Quad is the big brother of Duo, doubling the amount of USB ports to 4 and pumping out 5 Amps of power effortlessly.
Quad is the thinnest UK USB charger that has 4 ports and at least 5 Amps of output.
For users who need extra energy source, Power combines the convenience of an external battery with USB ports and the same thin Flip profile. It is an essential gadget for mobile warriors and power users.
Power is the only product on the market that combines a power bank, USB port and British plug in such an easy-to-carry design. When plugged, Power can charge both the internal battery and any connected device concurrently.
We looked at previous attempts of modernizing the British plug and felt they fell short. Some are hard to open while others have minimal features for power hungry mobile devices. Our core design concept was to make Flip as thin as possible while still being flexible enough to add new features.
If we make Flip too thin, concerns arise regarding both the sturdiness and the ability to add new functions. At the same time, it has to be both easy to use and reliable. We found the 18mm to be the right balance between thickness and features. Flip with USB adapter is just the first step. We are looking to create new versions that will work for general appliances as well as supporting the latest power technology.
OneAdaptr specializes in power plugs and adapters, and our last Kickstarter project, Twist, was successfully launched 12 months ago. We are based in Hong Kong and are intimately familiar with the British plug design, and we’ve wanted to do something about its size since 2013. Flip started around the same time as Twist, but took more time to develop.
The biggest challenges are the structural engineering aspects of the work. Adding to the complexity is the button action, which adds to the size. It took us a lot of time to develop a combination of size and structure that satisfies our design goal. With the success of the Twist project and your support, we were able to mass produce Twist and gain the confidence to finish the Flip development timeline
Our team members has over 20 years of collective experience with designing and building power adapter, surge protectors and other power related products. Our first project Twist was successfully launched on Kickstarter and was reviewed by several leading Apple and design medias.
Rene Hendriksen - Engineering
Originally from Netherland, Rene is our engineering go to guy. He has years of experience in manufacturing and certification. He was in the Twist video.
Michael Ma - Product Manager
He came out with the Flip concept and drove the team toward to his vision. He was featured in the Flip video. He is originally from Hong Kong and studied in Canada.
Peter Ho - Supply Chain and Manufacturing Expert.
Sourcing and supply chain management are such under-appreciated aspect of making a product and Peter is our guy for the job. He is Canadian and has moved to Hong Kong to pursue his dreams.
Mark Knowles - Business Development
Mark is from UK and knows the ins and outs of building global distribution and sales network for consumer electronics. With years serving European and Asian market, Mark is the perfect person for this role.
If we reach 20,000 GBP mark, we will send 2 set of stickers for every Flip (you can see an example in the Kickstarter video). Your selections are:
At the end of campaign, we will run a survey for you to vote your favorites and send the top 2 to every Flip backer.
If we make it to £30000, we will add a new reward for Flip Duo QC2. It is Flip Duo with Quick Charge 2.0 capability. Delivery time is expected to be April 2016.
Risks and challenges
We have launched successful hardware products and took a Kickstarter project from end to end with many happy customers. We understands the challenges and our experience can help smooth the process. Developing product is never easy. From design to production, there are pitfalls everywhere. While delay can happen due to unforseen consequences, we will utilize our experience to navigate pass the obstacles and communicate with you in a timely fashion. Shipping, custom/duty/tax varies from country to country. We will do our best for selecting reputable shipper. Reward does not cover any type of tax, duty fee and charges related to clearing custom.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
