Be Humble, Be Noble and Let Your Light Shine
It's time for a revolution in children's books. Tired of bland illustrations, respun versions of the ugly ducking and reading storybooks as a one-way conversation? Our books are full of spirit, inspire discussions in families and classrooms with discussion guides & activities and feature multicultural characters that reflect the world we live in today.
You Are Made of Stars: Why leadership is about shining your light is a traditional children's picture book coupled with family and classroom discussions that talk about our unique worth and calling in the world. Your support of the project would help me pay the design team to finish the illustrations AND to print a beautiful hard cover limited edition copy of the book.
It is a story with indigenous themed messages about our worth, community and contribution. In some African tribes, a baby is brought into the world quite deliberately. A mother goes away to meditate and feels the unique spirit and song of the baby. She then teaches this song to her husband, the midwives when the baby is being born, and eventually, the whole community knows the song of the child.
When the child steals, or does something against the community's values, the community encircles the child and sings them their song to remind them of who they really are.
At all major life events, including death, the song is sung again. In this case, the young girl's song is "You Are Made of Stars". She also learns from the leadership lessons of Einstein, Tina Turner, Richard Branson and the Dalai Lama who each found unique ways to lead and shine their light.
The classroom and family discussion guides also include an overview of the science of the cosmos and how we are actually made of stardust.
Who Is a Leader, my first book, reached number one in THREE categories on Amazon.com just this January (it says two in the video, but we reached the third after the video was shot). It was described as a storybook for children and a book of wisdom for adults. It is my hope that these books carry that tradition from the first book and help not only kiddos but adults tap into their own star power as well.
You Are Made of Stars and A Leader Has Values are the next two books in the series. A Leader Has Values: Active learning strategies for engaging family and classroom discussions comes as a bonus. It is full of activities to help you and the children in your life define your values as individuals, families and members of communities.
Each book is 8 x10. You Are Made of Stars will be at least 40 pages (the traditional children's book is 32). The Values book will likely be 50-60 pages long.
One of my favorite quotes:
The fourth book in the series will cover mindfulness and well-being to cover all the components of the Lead to Love model for instilling great leadership into the minds and hearts of children and adults alike:
With your help, I can bring these messages of love and leadership into classrooms, to the dinner table, and even into the boardroom.
- Book and workbook layout design
- Obtaining ISBN numbers, registration fees and costs associated with getting listed in online bookstores
- Production of the books
Risks and challenges
Here's my plan to make this happen and to get these books into your hands to kickoff the start of summer (May).
1. Making the book
This isn't my first rodeo, but it is only my second. I understand all of the various ups and downs that happen in the process. But I love pouring my heart in soul into what I do so for me this is a privilege. I will keep you updated with all of the latest illustrations and developments so you can live vicariously through my experience.
2. Printing the book
When the final version of the book is completed and proofed, it takes time for printing. I have found an excellent, reliable printer and it takes about two weeks of turn around time along with the initial proof.
3) Shipping the book
Shipping in-country I feel confident about the pricing, but for various international destinations it can be more difficult. However, friends all over the world have received copies of the first book without a hitch.
4) Can Do Mind-Set
The most important thing is that no matter what challenges that may come my way, I have the mind-set to overcome them and to get these in your hands and the hands of your loved ones as soon as possible.
