The Princess and the Drageena was written by Michael Wicks and illustrated by Mike Essa. The stories started as bedtime stories for my wife when we first engaged to be married. Whilst drifting asleep I would hear "tell me a story" and thus the Drageena was born.
After a few stories my fiance said that I should start to write them down. Not an easy task after a night of sleep.
Our main characters are based on animals and humans in our lives.
The Drageena - It's form and personality are based on our Old English Sheep Dog and all the stories revolve around her and her moods. If you never experienced this dog in all her glory you can capture a bit of it in this book but nothing ever really compares to meeting one in real life.
The Princess - I tried to capture, in the princess, what I think the world is going to today. Most princesses are all American and portrayed that way. Since my wife is not American I decided that the princess character should be based on her.
The Prince - Yeah I think this is easy to figure out. Although I do believe Mike Essa took some liberties when creating the drawing.
Supporting Actors - There are many including other drageenas, a wizard, a farmer, and a cobbler.
The Book's Timeline
It took almost 2 years to capture the stories and edit them into one cohesive book. After writing the stories I teamed up with an amazing young illustrator who was able to climb inside my head and pull out exactly what I was imagining in every scene.
I have to say it was really cool to see what I had imagined come to life on paper. The government must think so too as they've issued copyrights for all our main characters.
Who We Are
The Author - Michael Wicks
Michael Wicks grew up in upstate NY, attended SUNY Geneseo and earned a degree in Sociology, Computer Science and Business. Yes he's an underachiever. After moving from east to the west he earned a SCUBA Diving certification and began underwater photography. He has been published in on line diving magazines and calendars such as National Wildlife Federation and has been involved in causes like IFAW's Whales Tails campaign and the Pablove Foundation's Shutterbug's program. Michael now resides in sunny Southern California with his princess wife and two drageena dogs.
The Illustrator - Mike Essa
Mike Essa was born and raised in the entertainment capital of the world, Burbank, CA. He found his passion for art when he was a child by obsessively drawing Garfield the Cat. He graduated from California State University of Northridge with a BA in arts/animation where he was one of the few in his animation class to finish a 2-D animated short titled "We, the Cavemen" which later was displayed in the CSUN Art Gallery for a month. After graduating, he then focused on illustrating and character designing, which eventually led him to illustrate "The Princess and the Drageena".
Why We Need You
This project has been a labor of love for almost 3 years now. The book and illustrations are complete. There are over 40 pages and 8 stories with illustrations on almost every page if not more. We've completed a proof book and an eBook, the eBook being available on Amazon. Our next step to complete this project is to raise money to bring to market an affordable softcover book and get that into distribution channels such as Amazon, Barnes and Noble and local independent book stores.
And this is where you come in. Our goal is modest and we believe very attainable, and we've got some exciting rewards that include original drawings of our characters to help make this come true.
Help make our dream a reality and pledge today! .
Of course, once we're funded you will be able to purchase additional books. If you've pledged you'll get an additional 20% off the listing price. Which should be around $10
