Robert Garcia's American Fantasy Press intends to publish a signed limited edition, a signed trade edition and an e-book of a new novel by Mike Baron, author of Whack Job, Helmet Head, Biker, Skorpio, Biker and Bruce Lee: Ghost of the Dragon. Mike’s the winner of two Eisners and an Inkpot award for his ground-breaking comic epic Nexus available as a dozen graphic novel archives. Banshees will have a cover by Erik M. Gist and B&W interior art by Spanish cover artist Jordi Armengol. Mike has been working on this book for about two years, and it will be his first hardcover novel.
The Banshees are Back!
(But they’re dead, aren’t they?)
Notorious for their satanic lyrics, drunken excess and rumors of blood sacrifice, the Banshees shocked the world with their only album Beat the Manshees. Death stalked their concerts—lightning, stabbings, overdoses. The world heaved a sigh of relief when the Banshees all died in a plane crash.
Or did they?
Forty years later, with no fanfare, they appear in a seedy Prague nightclub, looking and sounding exactly the same. The Banshees phenomenon goes viral — are they real or is it all a brilliant publicity stunt? And the nightmare has gotten worse. Every time the Banshees play someone dies. Is it bad luck or part of some diabolical plan?
Ian St. James, son of original Banshees drummer Oaian St. James, can't believe his eyes. He joins with In Crowd magazine’s beautiful young reporter Connie Cosgrove to discover the truth. As the two travel Europe and America following the band, they discover the secret history of the Banshees and their ties to black magic, the Russian mob and the mysterious Lord Rathkrogen.
Ian must fight through his own jealousy, inadequacy and alcoholism to battle the most dangerous demon of all. Or the Banshees concert in Palisades Park in Los Angeles will be more than just the end of the tour. It could be the end of the world.

THE ARCHITECT: Graphic Novel trade paperback. A stand-alone 70-page horror graphic novel written by Mike Baron and illustrated by Andie Tong, published by Big Head Press. It’s a tale that starts with petty evil and grows through one-man’s megalomania into an epic horrific catastrophe. Blogcritics Review: “The Architect is a horrific and fun tale of a master builder gone bad and the havoc he wreaks on his family. Baron excels at fast-paced, tightly plotted storytelling, and this story is no exception.” The Pulse: For Your Consideration: “No detail is insignificant, and the foundation upon which Baron constructs his tale is solid and entertaining, moving the story forward while dropping these incidental details along the way like bread crumbs in a forest. Readers may absorb the many pieces of the puzzle, but their importance will not be understood until the climax rushes upon them.”
We're offering 3 books from American Fantasy Press as premiums:
A WALKING TOUR OF THE SHAMBLES: A little 5x8 Square Bound trade paperback ($15 SRP): Neil Gaiman and Gene Wolfe take us on the tour of the most dangerous neighborhood in the Windy City. DARKSIDE: A limited edition hardcover (750 copies). A novel by Dennis Etchison ($35 SRP). A story of a father looking for his missing step-daughter during a rash of teenage disappearances in L.A. We feel it's a great quiet horror companion to Baron's Banshees. One of author Dennis Etchison’s "California Gothic" horror novels where evil flourishes in the harsh glare of Californian sun. This is the author's preferred text. Signed by author Dennis Etchison and Horror Legend Ramsey Campbell who provides an introduction. Ray Bradbury said of the book: "Dennis Etchison's Darkside at last brings him to the forefront of this genre, where he belongs."

Mike Baron is an author with a unique sensibility and style that always makes his fiction exciting and sometimes controversial. He made his career as a comics writer creating the popular Nexus and Badger characters. Nexus brought Mike two Eisners and an Inkpot award, and has gone on to be published by four different publishers at last count. Badger continues to jump around, a new series promised from the revived First Comics. He has also written the comic series The Flash, The Punisher, Deadman, Batman, Green Lantern and more. He adapted Timothy’s Zahn’s Heir to the Empire for Dark Horse’s Star Wars comics, and has countless stand-alone issues to his credit.
In 2012, Mike began writing novels, Whack Job, Helmet Head and Skorpio are available from WordFire Press. The mystery novel Biker is available from Airship 27.
WHACK JOB is a science fiction thriller written by Mike Baron. The heads of state are combusting and retired secret agent Otto “Aardvark” White is brought back to active duty to discover the most outrageous plot in the history of the world. Expert Comics Review: "Mr. Baron weaved layers upon layers with the book always moving forward, there was no lag, no stall and absolutely no let up. I gladly recommend this book to readers of Sci-Fi, action, drama, intrigue, love stories and comic books!" SFRevu Review: “Baron has crafted a gem of a story, with a scope that spans from the dusty wastelands of Libya to the White House. (and nearby Alexandria, VA) to a loner's shack out in the woods. There are surprise returns and reversals along the way, with a big twist arriving as events race toward their conclusion.”
HELMET HEAD is Baron’s grind-house tour-de-force. Helmet Head was just a rumor to the one percenters--a monstrous motorcyclist dressed all in black who rode the back roads of Little Egypt cutting off the heads of other bikers with a samurai sword. But on one terrible stormy night, Deputy Pete Fagan discovers that Helmet Head is all too real and filled with a fury that won't be satisfied until his demonic sword drinks deeply. CBGXtra.com Review: "a striking combination of horror, science fiction, urban legends, and men’s adventure stories.” Feomante Review: “Helmet Headfeels like it came out of an all night, booze-guzzling think tank consisting of Georges Arnaud, Richard S. Prather, Richard Laymon, Mike Mignola, George Miller, and Byron Kennedy….More than science fiction, supernatural or even slasher, Helmet Headis an intrinsically American, high-octane, hard-core 1960s style pulp novel set to modern times.” Comimix: “It’s got plenty of bikers, high-holy-horror and senses-shattering action that certainly will thrill his many fans.”
BIKER is the story of an ex-con turned private investigator which delves deep into the world of drugs, dog-fights, guns and biker gangs. Charles Saunders, author of Imaro and Damballa:“Hard-boiled. Hard-edged. Hard-core. Hard to put down until you get to the last page.”
