- It is 2097, A.D. In the aftermath of series of asteroid collisions, America has fallen under Church Law: the Statue of Liberty has a cross instead of a torch, and the Holy Infant is about to replace the tablets… In the West, tribes of diggers refuse conversion and are chased down by God’s marines, Jesuit crusaders led by Father Elano, the Church’s top enforcer. In the East, stuck in mid-Atlantic, looms the Harlequin Island, a floating colony of self-exiled libertarians led by Sir Gottfrey. A maverick genius who lives with his organs outside his body, Gottfrey kills time cloning the past’s famous and infamous—the so-called replikas—for his sheer entertainment. But he’s about to cross the line: his next show will be a highly authentic Easter Pageant, starring the J-Clone, a Jesus look-alike cloned from a drop of blood off the Turin Shroud. When Double-M, a replika of Marilyn Monroe (and J-Clone’s girlfriend) runs away from Harlequin Island and alerts the Church about the upcoming show, the holy shit hits the fan at the Holy See! Crying ‘Anathema!’, the Pope commissions Father Elano to kidnap the J-Clone and spoil the libertarians’ sacrilegious masquerade.
MISBEGOTTEN was initially a screenplay Caesar Voghan completed in January 2013. A few movers and shakers in NY and LA deemed the project both too… original and way too controversial, and offered a long laundry list of changes that needed to be made in order to make the story more sealable. He thanked them for their kind words, and decided instead to keep it AS IS, and go Indie. The graphic novel at the heart of this funding campaign represents an accurate adaptation of the original screenplay.
The funds raised will be used to cover: (a) the freelancing fee for the illustration of “Tear of Death” (Issue no. 2) of the graphic novel, slated for a July 2014 release; (b) the freelancing fee for the creation of brand-specific artwork to be featured on a line of merchandise (T-Shirts, hats, coffee mugs, posters, etc.) (c) the freelancing fee for designing the cover of the novel "MISBEGOTTEN, vol.1, THE ROAD TO HARLEQUIN ISLAND" (Spring 2014) (d) the start-up cost for an aggressive Social Media-based marketing campaign for "Runaway Nun" (Issue no. 1) which is almost completed and will become available on Kindle and in paperback in February 2014!
"Runaway Nun," the first issue of the graphic novel is an adaptation of the opening novella with the same title available on Amazon, which, since its publication in September of 2013, has broken several times in the Top 100 under both Cyberpunk and Satire genres.

Marilen Adrover is a Spanish graphic artist who specializes in both illustrations and photo manipulation. She designs the artwork for MISBEGOTTEN, the written novel, as well as for the brand-specific merchandise. Born in Mallorca, she studied art in Barcelona for more than six years before graduating in 2011 at the top of her class. She has worked on various projects such as CD covers (for Emea and Partapart Records) and book covers ("The Beautiful and Cursed," Random House). Her work has been featured in webzines as well as in personal and collective exhibitions. Her four-illustration series "Fairy Tales Mugshots" was a front page Reddit sensation, and was subsequently featured on various sites. For more of her work, check out http://teelamb.deviantart.com and www.facebook.com/adroverart.
Both Marilen and Justin are 'sold' to the story of Misbegotten and uber-excited to take the world by storm with their art. Your financial support will guarantee that they will be rewarded for their hard work and the time they will be putting in.
Risks and challenges
Given the fact that the initial novella has already attracted enough attention on Amazon (I mean, J-Clone falling in love with Double-M, c'mon...?), and with the first issue of the graphic novel almost completed and ready to hit the world of comic book fans and Sci Fi enthusiasts, we are confident that, with an aggressive Social Media campaign, we can make this project a success and launch the next Graphic Novel franchise!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
