When Tom Avery receives a Father's Day card from his daughter Sarah he reluctantly takes the first step towards reconciling with her after spending two years in self-imposed exile. With the help of his son, Brian, Tom is equipped with a new car and a "newfangled techno gadget" GPS device to help him find his way back to see her.
As he begins his journey Tom finds himself directed at every step to face the memories of the events that drove the family apart in the first place. Scenes from his past come alive before his eyes as he revisits the glory days of coaching Sarah to become a champion runner, the devastating night of the car accident that took her legs and the fallout from the days of her recovery. By confronting each of these specters of his past Tom is able to make amends for his actions and accept his terrible mistake and take the biggest step of all: facing Sarah herself.
Ultimately, Tom discovers that the dream of Sarah becoming a championship runner belongs to more than just himself- and that it is powerful enough to compensate for even his worst mistakes.
