After the success of The Roslof Keep Campaign, AotG is going back to its own world, the Nameless Realms, for the Taux Trilogy in Folios #11-13. Folio #11, Adventures from the Emerald Serpent, will feature characters, places, plots, and intrigue made famous by award-winning authors Julie E. Czerneda, Todd Lockwood, Lynn Flewelling, Dave Gross, Martha Wells, Harry Connolly, Dan Wells, Howard Tayler, and many more. This latest volume of the Folio is something that was born four years ago with the release of the shared world anthology Tales of the Emerald Serpent, and I’m extremely proud to finally be able to bring my role-playing expertise to its transition from fiction to tabletop.
This first volume of the Taux Trilogy will take place in and around the events Tales of the Emerald Serpent, your characters interacting with the various personalities of the infamous Black Gate District. Included as always will be out bevy of maps, both 3D & 2D, a setting gazetteer, adventure booklet, and of course removable cover for use as a DM screen.
For those of you wishing to immerse yourself completely in the setting, there are backer options for both print and digital versions of both Taux novels, and stretch goals for the campaign will expand on Iconic Characters, Taux Places, and Mini-Adventures and even an original short story by Julie Czerneda herself.
I truly hope you will take the time to check out what this latest addition to the Nameless Realms has to offer, and thanks again for supporting Art of the Genre.
My Project: Folio #11 is the first part of a trilogy of three modules dedicated to the mechanics of classic fantasy 1st Edition & 5th Edition gaming, and set in the Nameless Realms city of Taux. It will be produced as an 8 1/2x11” removable ‘DM screen’ cover with both b/w & color interiors. It features a gazetteer booklet, an adventure booklet, 2D&3D mapping and Folios tend to be 32 pages in length.
Who’s it for? ALL gamers, both new gamers and old gamers as it is easily expandable or playable as is.The concept is to allow gamers a starting point for adventure that will lead them on an epic quest. This means a hard driving concept (think the Descent series of OSR modules) but some adaptability within the overall frame. The base mechanic will be for 1st Edition with 5th Edition stat blocks in grey.
Below I'll post a video concerning how these Folios are put together as well as some frame pictures for a better look. If you remember the classic modules from old 1980s TSR as well as incredible painted covers from Dragon and Dungeon magazine, we've tried to bring all that back while incorporating modern design and mechanics.
When? The initial outlines are complete as always, and like all Folio products we want to get these to our customers as quickly as possible. We are looking at a late November release for this product.
Why Taux? Well, because it took over a dozen really incredible writers to pool their collective creativity to create Taux and its characters, plus years of development in the Nameless Realms, and I have always wanted to be able to share these creations with gamers. Now seemed like the perfect time.
I can’t do this without you: Art of the Genre needs your help! We've trimmed out all excess costs and have a break even amount of $5,000. This covers the printing, shipping, & design, to create this OSR tribute. We have already devoted countless hours to seeing this product come together, but to make it ‘real’ and available to all players, we need your help. We believe in this dream, and we hope you do too!
What happens if we pass the goal? If we pass the goal, we hope to be able to continue to add in refinements and bonus material to the Folio. Remember, this is an epic quest, so the more we can expand the story for you, the more fun is available to you and your players.
Formerly the Tolimic City of Taux, this stand alone metropolis rests at the tip of the Free Coast and once served as a way station between a dozen large nations all over the northern Halo Ocean. More than half a century before the current date, during the final days of the Five Year War that banished all the old gods from the world, the population of the city was destroyed by a necromantic surge of energy. The tale of that destruction is as follows:
Near a century ago in the Nameless Realms timeline a council of Moon Priests and a coven of Tome-Mages theorized that like the Afterglow Sea that resides beyond the Elemental Plane of Water, there should be another plane of existence behind each of the known Elemental Planes [Fire, Water, Earth, Air, Positive Radiance, and Negative Shadow]. Because Taux sat so close to the ‘Ebon Swamp’ which is known to bubble up with Negative Elemental energy, they decided to dedicate a portion of their resources to discovering this ‘other plane’ from the secret subterranean conduits in Taux. Years passed, and the two Orders built a series of tunnels beneath the surface of Taux that could be used as a kind of elemental broadcasting station. Then, on a night corresponding with the closest proximity of the Negative Elemental Plane to the planetary sphere, they broke into a huge magical ceremony that would ‘ping’ beyond the Negative Elemental Plane, hoping to find another source of raw magical power there. The theory was that some reverb would come back that proved its existence and they could use that for further contact. Nine hours after the magical ping, just as the city woke in the predawn gloom for work, a nightmare scream struck the city with an apocalyptic wave. Every living thing within a hundred miles was obliterated; all souls flash-burned into the stone of the landscape around it. Since that day the city and surrounding lands have been quiet, but the souls still remember, now trapped forever in the walls of their cursed city…
Today, Taux is once again a thriving port city, although instead of Tolimic Humans, it is populated from many cultures all over the Halo and beyond, each trying to make a profit on the mass of cargo that moves through the free city without taxation. Although still haunted by the spirits of the past, the current inhabitants try to quiet the stone and live with strange whispers at night or the sounds of cries from rooms no one is currently in.
Maps are the engine that makes most adventuring happen, so we’ve spared no expense on all our Folio projects, and Taux will be no different. As you can see, the talent involved in the creation of these dungeons, districts, and cities is off the hook.
You know, I considered posting words here, but why do that when I can have one of our authors read it for you. Julie will not only give you a small reading from her work, but also discuss how this shared world came together and what you will be getting fiction wise if you are looking for great reference and adventure seeds. So, without further introductions on my part, here is one of the genius writers of Taux, Julie Czerneda.
Remember, you can get these anthologies in both print and digital formats in the rewards!
Iconic Characters are what drives the spirit of a shared world anthology like Tales of the Emerald Serpent. These authors have gone to great lengths to provide insight and motivations to these characters, and as players you will get the opportunity to interact with them as you like, kind of like walking into a bar and meeting Conan or Elric.
$6000: Iconic Character Inclusion #1 Torrent UNLOCKED!: A corsair by birth, and one seemingly cursed to dwell in Taux, a city she hates, this water-born swashbuckler is always looking for a way out.
$7500: Mini-Adventure T1.5 Storm Seasons: Storms aren’t uncommon in Taux, but large ones that breach the brake-water are rare sights, and what they tend to wash up along the beaches are the things of legend.
$8500: Iconic Character Inclusion #2 Dethocrates: This earth-born mercenary has seen many things in his travels and worn many hats, but now he calls Taux home. Sometimes buffoon, sometimes caretaker of the downtrodden, Deth is a mainstay of the Black Gate.
$10000: Taux Places V1: Want more info on Taux? This small volume will detail more intrigues of the Black Gate District, including NPCs and possible adventures for the characters.
