About this project
We're building a truck, a very special truck.
The basis of our project is formatted around the visual aesthetic of the cargo trucks of Pakistan and the ideas that surround their intended purposes. We are building a cargo truck in the traditional Pakistani-style with a Midwest twist and a new function. We are collaborating with Ateller CMS Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit visual art program.
PLEASE check out www.pctinitiative.com for the FULL scoop.
The final product will resemble aspects of these cargo trucks. . .
From the hand carved wooden doors down to the overly ornate, almost mind-boggling paint job, this build will be time consuming, meticulous and pain-staking. But so worth it, right?
Rather than the finished quality goods these trucks normally carry, our truck will be carrying possibility, potential and a little bit of magic. We're creating a mobile sculpture and fine art laboratory. This will let the destinations define the significance of the voyages rather than the goods it's carrying. The truck will be equipped with a 4 by 4 CnC plasma cutting machine, a hand-built printing press (built in collaboration with the Print Factory), numerous hand-held tools, welding equipment, a generator, etc. Most equipment has already been purchased and is awaiting installation into its new home.
The equipment for the truck. . .
These trucks in Pakistan employ hordes of craftsmen and painters and take months to accomplish. We will be employing Midwestern and national artists and craftsmen to help build ours.
For our project, I have selected and purchased a 1952 Chevrolet grain truck as a shell. This style of truck is distinctly American and has been a long-standing staple in the farming industry in the Midwest. It has a similar body style to the Bedfords (model of truck commonly used in Pakistan, at one time produced by Chevrolet); however, this model was never introduced to an international market.
Our Truck. . .
We will be taking the traditional format of the Pakistani cargo truck and will create a completely original, functional and culturally mixed final hybrid.
Most of the fabrication will take place at my shop here at the Belger Studios in Kansas City, Missouri. We have a full array of fabrication equipment to aid us on this build. From CnC machines down to hand planes, we've got tools covered.
The truck will be displayed as a piece of fine art and will be used as a tool for social and cultural enrichment. You'll might even catch a surprise glimpse of it on your local highway. Don't crash, it's just me. You will be able to track our movement, and meet up if you wish to do so, via our website listed below.
The project is intended to engage people from all professions, races, classes, backgrounds and educations. Our goal is to inspire people to want to learn and research cultures outside of their everyday surroundings, thoughts and backgrounds. With your help, we can make this dream a reality.
Plus, you'll get these RAD rewards. . .
The Bumper sticker-
This is a sketch of the 11 by 17 woodblock done in collaboration with Will Burnip and the Print Factory. This limited edition kickstarter exclusive print comes signed and numbered.
Putting on this comfy, high quality, 100% cotton shirt will instantly make you this cool. (No guarantee, but hey, its worth a shot).
Hang this on that drab wall to give it some life.
This is an example of Flower Power. Every one is original - no two alike. I'm also going to cut your name directly into the base. BOOM.
WHAT YOUR MONEY WILL GO TOWARDS-
1) The Mechanics
This truck is 58 years old. While in good body shape, she still needs a LOT of TLC. We're putting in a new engine, drive train, transmission, new glass and new rubber - Just to name a few of the necessary updates. Because of the nature of some of these tasks we will need to hire out the work so we will incur some labor fees.
2) The Aesthetics
Nothing is cheap these days. We will need tons of steel plates, tubes and angles; gallons of automotive paint; many feet of hardwood; yards of fabric and other upholstery materials, etc.
3) The rewards
This stuff ain't cheap!
THE REAL CHEESE-
We need all of the support we can get from you lovely folks. What we're asking for is a bare minimum to get this project rolling. The more support we can muster up, the better the truck will turn out.
