What is All The Stations - Ireland?

In 2017 the All The Stations team, led by Geoff Marshall and Vicki Pipe, travelled to every single railway station in Great Britain - all 2,563 of them. The journey was documented on YouTube (you can watch all 59 original videos here) with live updates on social media taking place daily. All The Stations - Ireland is our next railway adventure, where we'll attempt to get to all 198 stations in Ireland and Northern Ireland

The whole journey will take two weeks to complete, and we intend to set off in early spring 2019.

We will create an online documentary series of the journey - capturing footage along the Iarnród Éireann and Northern Ireland Railways networks, exploring the communities connected to the lines and interviewing local people and those who work on the railways, to find out about their experiences of travelling by train.

All The Stations - all of them!
All The Stations - all of them!

 It’s not just about us

Through social media we want to share the whole experience with you, our supporters, and for your thoughts and ideas to contribute to the journey and the stories we tell - just as we did before.

During our time on the rails we will:

  • Post professionally edited videos on YouTube that document the journey and bring you closer to the experience. There will be one video created for each day we spend travelling on the rails.
  • Keep you in touch with our daily progress using Facebook Live, Twitter and photographs on Instagram - all as it happens.

Why is this project important?

Throughout our project in Great Britain, we discovered that the railways mean different things to different people. For some they provide vital links for jobs, education and well-being. They can connect different communities, forge friendships and open up new opportunities. For others they are a cause of frustration, or simply a necessary hurdle to overcome in their day to day lives.

But is this the same everywhere? How do the people of Ireland and Northern Ireland feel about their railways? What challenges do they face, what are the highlights, how quaint are the stations, what historical and cultural stories can you connect to and where can you get the best buffet cuppa?

And how do the railways themselves operate? Will we still find manually operated gates and semaphore signals in use? Is there seamless interoperability between services in Ireland and Northern Ireland? What happens after the UK leaves the EU, how will this impact passenger journeys across the Irish border?

We aim to answer all these questions, sharing the entire story with you along the way, to capture a unique moment in European transport history.

It's not just about the railways, it's also about the incredible places and stories you can connect with along the way.

Where will your money go?

All the money we raise will go directly towards the delivery of this project and creating high quality videos, packed with rich and engaging content that reaches as many people as possible.

  • Production and video editing - we have a dedicated team of three London-based editors working on the project to ensure consistent, high quality videos.
  • Travel costs - this will include train tickets, journeying to and from Ireland and the occasional bus or taxi ride when required between stations.
  • Accommodation - to make the most of our time we will need to find accommodation as close to stations as possible.
  • Equipment - there are just one or two items that we need to purchase for this project, including a replacement secondary camera.
  • Admin costs - as a live project, the team at base camp will help to keep us connected when we're on the move. This ensures we stay in the loop with all our supporters and don’t miss any opportunities to share the project more widely.
  • Web, graphics and media support - as a live project, our social media channels, website and transfer of data will be key to engaging with people everywhere.
  • Food - tea (of course) and sandwiches will keep the energy flowing!

Project Rules

To make things clear, we have set out the following parameters for the project.

What counts as a station?

  1. At the time of planning there are 144 stations on the Iarnród Éireann network and 54 stations on Northern Ireland Railways, giving us a total of 198 stations to visit.
  2. We will not be including the Luas tram system in Dublin, but may attempt to travel on it if time allows.
  3. We will not be including any disused sections on the network (e.g the Waterford to Rosslare line) where the track and stations are still in place but services no longer run.

What counts as having visited each station?

  1. At each station we must either arrive or leave on a scheduled train that is timetabled to stop. Fast trains that pass through do not count.
  2. We do not have to leave the train at every station, but we will get off at some of the most interesting stations to capture footage of the surrounding areas.
  3. Unlike England, Wales and Scotland, Ireland has no request stops, so there's no special rule this time to have to deal with them!
  4. This is not a race to complete the journey in the fastest time possible. It is a team effort between two people to cover all the stations, with the cameras rolling.

Stretch Goals

Our original Kickstarter target of £14,500 will allow us to produce 11 videos, one for each of the days we expect to be travelling on the rails.

Stretch Goal 1

Our first stretch goal will take us to £16,562 and allow us to create five additional videos - bringing the overall total to 16. Three of these will allow us to split long days of travelling (over 12 hours) into two videos.  The fourth bonus video will allow us to explore the Dublin Luas tram system, and the fifth will cover our explorations during one of our 'days off' from the trains - likely we'll be in search of an abandoned line or disused station.

Stretch Goal 2

Further stretch goals will depend on the exact amount we receive. Options include, investigating the transport links between Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man, or extending the length of our trip to spend some additional time in certain locations en route. In either case, our focus will be to produce more video content and engagement online for you!

We will update you with more details as soon as we can.

Risks and challenges

THE UNEXPECTED! We plan to complete our journey in two weeks, but we will need to be prepared for unexpected delays. We will build in flexibility to our schedule to help us account for the unknown. We will use our Jedi route planning skills to aid us, but will also ask for help from you, our supporters, to give us local knowledge about how we might be able to re-plan and find alternative routes as needed. We're in this together!

DELAYED OUTPUT OF VIDEOS. At the end of each day, we will back up our footage and send it back to our editors in London. We are planning to have a turnaround time of approximately 48 hours for each video. Sometimes there may be a delay, but we will always keep you up to date and let you know what's happening.

WORKING WITH LARGE INTERNATIONAL ORGANISATIONS. We are talking to our many railway contacts both in the UK and Ireland to gather support and information about our journey. We will keep you up to date through social media and let you know about any alterations or changes that we might need to make to our plans.

THIS IS NOT A RACE. In our excitement it may be easy to get carried away with just ticking off 'All The Stations' on the list, but we want to ensure we share rich stories and provide an exciting, engaging and comprehensive documentary. This is a team effort between Geoff and Vicki to cover All the Stations in Ireland and Northern Ireland with the camera rolling and we will reach out to you, our supporters, for your thoughts, ideas and experiences about the best and most unique places we should go to along the way.
