Once upon a time I was an almost rock star. I lived an epic story of seeing the mountain top, then falling from it, losing my way then finding redemption. An American Idol songwriting contest winning song turned my life - and my family's life - completely around.
Along the way, that story - which entails a dramatic journey to China and the adoption of a daughter with a rare genetic disorder - became a big part of my professional life. In some ways I put my artistry on hold ...to tell one story over and over.
Now, 8 years later, I'm ready to move beyond this one cornerstone of my journey and make a new project of new songs that talk about life now. Stories and melodies I've been compiling for the past few years are ready for a new home.
On An Island is the project that will be that home.
Some of the songs on this project are already recorded. Some are not. But all fit into the mosaic of an aging Gen Xer's snapshot of life as it is in this moment.
Regret, gratitude, wisdom, longing and love are the reasons for a project like On An Island.
Risks and challenges
The risks of doing a project like this, at my age (48) are simply that no one may care. Plus who wants to buy a whole CD of songs in the digital single age? The biggest challenge of all may be to keep the listeners interested for all 12 songs.
My view of the world may not be what rings true for younger (or even older) listeners. Generation X has been called the "in between" generation.
I'm trying to find new insights in songs that my 9-year-old son will be able to listen to in 50 years and understand where I was and what I was thinking about at this time in my life.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
