The Vapors is the first longform comic by Ben Saint (that's me!). I'm an artist from Boston who's been working on independent animations, comics, and games since 2014. The Vapors, an offbeat, genre-ambiguous story about Vincent and Magda, two college weirdos, was my first comic-book-length work.
For around 6 months in 2015 I worked on The Vapors in my free time while supporting myself as a physics tutor. I released the comic for free online in November of that year. Since then I've done a second chapter of the Vapors, as well as several other longform comic stories, and am currently starting work on a third chapter. All of my comics have been released for free on my website, SaintComix.com.
This kickstarter will fund the first-ever physical printing of chapter 1 of The Vapors. The book will be 36 pages, printed on #80 glossy paper, saddle-stitched, 6.5 inches wide by 9.75 inches high.
What do you get for backing this project?
Backers at any level are deeply appreciated. Even a few dollars is a big help to the campaign and helps bring The Vapors closer to seeing the physical printing I always wanted to give it.
Here are all the available rewards for backing this campaign. If you pledge enough for multiple rewards and would like to claim more than one, please include instructions with your pledge about which combination you'd like. For example, if you'd like two copies of the comic and a pin, then you can pledge $40 and choose the $25 pledge, and include a message with your pledge
A $15 pledge gets you a freshly-printed copy of The Vapors.
A $25 pledge gets you a copy of the comic PLUS a hard enamel metallic Poobah pin! The pins are approximately one inch across and pressed by Zap! Creatives, a custom manufacturer based in the UK.
Also, any pledge of $25 or more will get your name listed on the SaintComix.com Thank You Page.
A $50 pledge gets you a one-of-a-kind copy of the comic, signed by me and with a custom note and/or sketch on the inside cover.
A $60 pledge will get you the one-of-a-kind signed copy, plus a Poobah pin.
A $100 pledge gets you comics and pins in bulk! You'll get one custom signed copy, plus three more copies and two Poobah pins. Picking this tier saves you $15 compared to getting everything included as individual rewards.
A $200 pledge gets you comics and pins in even more bulk! You'll get one custom signed copy, ten standard copies, and five Poobah pins. Picking this tier saves you $50 compared to getting everything included as individual rewards.
A $1000 pledge is if you're so invested in The Vapors or my comics in general that you want to be a part of them. Give this much and you'll appear as a background character in The Vapors, chapter 3 (or another future comic of your choice). Technically, this reward was already available, and if you've donated to me previously or been a supporter on Patreon, you can qualify for this reward by pledging enough to bring your total lifetime support of my work to $1000. A few people have reached this amount already, and it's still on the table for new supporters.
How will the money raised be spent?
The $1750 goal of this Kickstarter is based on the goal of printing 500 copies of The Vapors, chapter 1. The price per copy of printing with Ka-Blam (the company printing the books) goes down when 500 or more copies are printed at a time so my goal is to reduce the overall cost of printing by hitting this amount.
Once the books are printed, copies will be sent to backers who pledged $15 or more towards this campaign. The remaining copies I'll keep on hand to sell in the future at conventions and online. Having physical books to sell will help me make some extra money from my art going forward and hopefully help me make more of a living at this whole comics thing.
Printing the comic with a sturdier, more attractive cardstock cover will add about $1 per copy to the price of printing, meaning printing a run of 500 copies with cardstock covers will cost about $500 more total. If this goal is reached, all printed copies will have the improved cover, even the copies already sold before the goal is reached!
Vaporette 2, a new, never-before-seen minicomic featuring Vincent and Magda, will be included in the final printed book. This will be the second of what I call "Vaporettes", the first of which you can see below. This minicomic will be written by me and drawn by Lorne Colt, creator of the webcomic Defans Amis.
Yup, another one! If this goal is reached, another minicomic, Vaporette 3, will be included in the final book, written by me and drawn by Emily Ree, creator of the comic Anarchy Dreamers.
Welp, I didn't think at the outset that the previous Stretch Goal would be hit, but here we are. So now we have another one, and if this goal is reached, the book will feature another bonus Vaporette, written by me and drawn by Munchy, my fellow Rowdy Fucker Cop Killer, host of the Arm Retrieval podcast and artist/writer of the upcoming webcomic Investigator.
Yup. It's come to this.
I'm all out of anything relevant to add to the comic. It's time to throw out the rulebook and forge a new and bold path down the Meme Shit highway. If this Kickstarter hits $6000 I will fulfill my meme destiny and buy an OCULUS RIFT, BABYYYYYY!!! Maybe I'll stream myself in VR? Maybe it'll just sit in my closet like a silly piece of junk? THE SKY IS THE LIMIIIIITTTTT!!!
What good would it be to spin my mighty merkhaba through virtual space all by my lonesome? If I hit the spiritually powerful number of 6666 american funbux, my chakras will be so blitzed that it'll send forth a mighty beacon of spiritual energies visible across all 144,000 known dimensions, which the prophecies clearly state will summon Munchy from the furthest Hell-Zones, and we will wreak havoc across cybertime and cyberspace.
Risks and challenges
Basically none. The book will be printed by Ka-Blam Digital Printing, which is a reputable printing service. The Poobah pins are already made. The rewards will be packed and shipped to backers by me personally. So unless Ka-Blam suddenly goes out of business and I forget how to mail a letter, then as long as the goal is reached this is pretty much in the bag.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
