For 30 years, Afghanistan has known only civil war. Renowned photographer Larry Towell takes an in-depth look at the country.
For 30 years, Afghanistan has known only civil war. Since 2008, I have made four trips to the country, where I am working on a long-term, in-depth photography project. I need one more trip to finish my investigation, which will result in a book of photographs and text.
Since the traditional venues for funding photojournalism have disappeared, I am appealing to you for help. Your support will enable me to finish shooting, and to interview landmine victims, male and female drug addicts, political detainees in Puli-Charki prison, ex-Russian soldiers, and veterans.
Afghanistan is a very expensive country in which to work, due to the need to hire professional fixers, interpreters, and drivers, and your support will help to cover these costs. I plan on returning to Afghanistan in early spring, for four to five weeks.
My most recent trip to Afghanistan was sponsored by the Magnum
Foundation. I’m taking the Emergency Fund pledge with respect to this trip and will make the pictures available to the Emergency Fund for display on its site and use by targeted non-profits to advance conversation around the issues.
I hope you recognize the value of this work, and that you will want to support it and be part of it.
