BOARD GAME BRAWL PREVIEW:
CATEGORIES: deduction games, murder/mystery games, party games, storytelling/storybuilding games.
86 original black and white photos evoke the mood of classical crime fiction as well as the visuality of suspense and film noir movies.
The crime element cards are inspiring and thought-provoking without exercising too much influence on the storytelling process.
Crime Writers is a card-based cooperative creative party game with semi-competitive elements played in 2 stages.
4 stacks of cards
The game contains 86 cards that represent the five basic elements of a crime story in four stacks of cards:
- crime scene
- cause of death
3 cards for each player
Every player draws a total of three cards from the four stacks at choice.
1st stage: writing
The first stage is a 10 minutes long writing stage. At this stage everyone writes down their own crime story using the elements shown on the cards they have drawn.
2nd stage: inquiry
In the second stage, players take turns becoming writers, while the others become guests. Writers begin their turn by revealing the title of their crime story. Guests ask questions trying to figure out the whole story, observing the rules of inquiry. The writer can respond to the questions only with the following answers:
- Not typical
- Not important
When guests figure out a crime element written by the writer, they receive three points. The longer it takes the guests to figure out all five elements of a story the more points the writer will score.
The question asking does not end after the five crime elements are known and the clock has stopped. The guests must continue until they can make all the connections and tell the whole story. Only then the next writer's turn begins.
The game ends after the story of each player has been found out.
For the complete set of rules please check the rule book of the game included in the box.
FEATURES AND SKILLS
ABOUT THE EXPANSION ’The Cerberus’
’The Cerberus’ is a fictional newspaper that gives us additional information about the crime story we are writing. Each one of the 30 cards shows a detail of an article (framed text). When playing with the expansion, every player draws a ’The Cerberus’ card adding it to their 3 crime element cards from the base game, so that no one else can see it. The players have to incorporate the detail shown on the card into the story they are writing, so that it becomes an organic part of it. According to the news, this detail plays a key role later in the investigation, so it must be important! (However, the story the player’s writing is preferably about the murder itself, not about the investigation.) The text on the card can be freely interpreted, like all the cards in the base game.

UNFILTERED GAMER REVIEW:
*** RESIDENT.COM ***
Rory Winston says:
"While we’ve all the heard the adage ‘Crime doesn’t pay,’ Crimewriters pays in dividends – it builds an understanding of the inner arsenal of creativity we store within us."
*** MIDNIGHT MEEPLE ***
Billy J.K Hansen says:
"Would I recommend Crime Writers? Yes and no. It depends very much on who you want to play with."
"If you as a student, e.g. journalist education, and has a study group, definitely yes, because it will turn on the imagination and open a world of possibilities for how an article can be set up."
"But if it’s for the family or the group who love less demanding games such as Codenames, well, I would strongly recommend that you stay away from it."
*** HIGH VOLTAGE MAGAZINE ***
Will Pasquin from High Voltage says:
"A travel friendly party game for those with a creative (and slightly twisted) mind"
*** BLOG: WHAT SHOULD WE PLAY? ***
A Hungarian board game blogger Zoli Győri says:
"I recommend the Crime Writers to all those who love crime stories and who are not afraid of a travel deep in their own and the others' mind and fantasy."
*** INDEX - ONLINE NEWS MAGAZINE ***
A Hungarian journalist Bálint Kovács says:
"The most creative game ever! It seems that the creators of Crime Writers wanted to find the absolute opposite of the "drink & vomit"-style party games. This game is the leather-bound, gilt lettered material of intellectual gatherings."
*** ZOOM - ONLINE NEWS MAGAZINE ***
A Hungarian journalist Judit Vajda says:
"The most exciting part of the game is creating your own story. We were playing a nearly perfect game."
LULLA GAMES AT UK GAMES EXPO
We presented Crime Writers at the UKGE in Birmingham this spring. We would like to thank everybody who visited us at our 'crime scene' stand, especially those who tried out Crime Writers :) We believe that everyone enjoyed the game, and we hope all our audience from anywhere in the world can reach Crime Writers soon! Please help us to bring the English version of the game to life!
We are an artist couple: Adam is a graphic designer and photographer, Bori is a painter and visual art teacher. Certainly both of us are board game lovers. We founded Lulla Games in 2016, which is a small indie book and tabletop game publishing company based in Budapest. We are the creators of all our books and games helped by many testers – big thanx to them!
Our first product was the enchanting children's book named "The Dream Fairy", released in 2016 in Hungarian.
Shortly after the book we published a card game and a memory game based on the The Dream Fairy book and story. These have been a big success among children. In 2017 we finalized our card based crime game named Crime Writers and published it in Hungarian. In this campaign we would like to share this game and it's brand new expansion with the board game lover community of the whole world. Future plans: at the moment we are developing two strategic euro style board games.
Risks and challenges
RISKS AND CHALLENGES
PLEASE READ THIS SECTION CAREFULLY BEFORE PLEDGING ON THIS CAMPAIGN.
This is our first campaign on Kickstarter, but it's important to know that the basic box of this game already exists in Hungarian. We developed it's expansion for the Kickstarter campaign. The English translations of the basic box are finished, but we still have to work on the expansion set. The manufacturing system and fulfillment services are prepared to start the process. So we have done everything to minimize the risks and to make sure that you will surely receive your reward. We have a detailed budget with several scenarios, so the project's funding goal is sensible and it is definitely possible to accomplish the project from this amount of funding.
EXPECTED PROJECT TIMELINE The following components need to be completed in order to start manufacturing after the campaign: box text, rule book layout, 0-2 stretch goal cards, final printing sheet layout.
- beginning of Oct 2018: Campaign ends
- Oct 2018: Finishing card print files, including the personalized cards too (captain pledges)
- beginning of Nov 2018: Manufacturing starts
- end of Nov 2018: Shipping starts
- middle of Dec 2018: Fulfillment shipping shall be done
PRODUCTION RISKS The project can be delayed only a little due to special circumstances (e.g. developing stretch goals or add-ons made available during the campaign) and external/third party delays (manufacturing or assembly taking longer than quoted, holidays, customs delays etc.). We will do our best to mitigate these, but nonetheless delays may happen.
SHIPPING DETAILS We offer customs-free "friendly" shipping in the USA, EU (VAT zone), Australia and Canada. For Rest Of World, we ship tracked packages but we cannot be held responsible for customs inspections and fees. We send replacements for damaged or missing items. In this case, contact us with photos at info[@]lullagames.com. (The damaged items should be sent back to us!)
