Kingcraft is a real-time strategy game, but unlike any you’ve played before. Influenced by my entire strategy-gaming career, I’ve designed a game that combines elements from turn-based games like Fire Emblem or Final Fantasy Tactics with real-time elements from games like Warcraft III or Battalion Wars. I’ve designed mechanics that present the player with quick tactical and strategic choices without overwhelming them with constant micromanagement. The simplest way to describe Kingcraft would be 'real-time fantasy chess.'
Kingcraft will be coming to PC, Mac, Linux, Android and iOS.
$9,000 - The final game will include ten additional game units. More unit types means more combinations and strategies!
$10,000 - The final game will include five additional stages. New environments mean a larger world map with more territories to claim and defend.
$12,000 - Each week I’ll stream a part of my development process. Via this stream, I can interact and get direct feedback from any backers or viewers who tune in.
$15,000 - The game will launch with cross-platform network multiplayer! Backers with access to the beta would be providing feedback crucial to the balancing process. Additionally, with backers playtesting my network code, I can ensure bug-free performance on all platforms. This is the goal to get excited about!
Everyone loves backer rewards! All backer’s names will appear in the credits.
$10 - You will earn you a copy of the game, at release, for a platform of your choosing. The release platforms will be PC, Mac, Linux, iOS, and Android.
$15 ($10 for early backers) - This tier will earn you a copy of the game, at release, for each platform.
$25 ($20 for early backers) - You will receive beta copies of the game throughout development. Your feedback will shape the development of Kingcraft. If the multiplayer stretch goal is reached, you will play a crucial role in the balancing process. At release, this tier includes a copy of the game for each platform. Beta testers are needed for every platform, and development builds will be made available for any platform you wish.
$30 - Kingcraft will feature an awesome soundtrack composed by none other than the amazing Nathan Rogers. Backing Kingcraft at this tier will get you a high-quality digital copy of the soundtrack. Additionally, you will receive a backer-exclusive wallpaper pack.
$45 - Represent Kingcraft proudly with your very own Kingcraft T-shirt! Have a good idea for a t-shirt design? Back Kingcraft at this tier and I welcome your submissions. A variety of designs will be made available, featuring your favorite units, stages, or battle scenes.
$80 - Help with the design of Kingcraft! Backers at this tier will work with me, via Skype or email, to design a game piece or stage for Kingcraft.
$150 - Help design a faction for the world of Kingcraft. Do you think Kingcraft needs a Thieves’ Guild? Mage’s College? Roaming zombie hordes? Design an in-game faction, featuring up to four unique units and a home stage. Also, I will metaphorically tattoo your name across my chest.
$250 - You will receive a personalized, handwritten thank-you letter (legible, I promise) expressing my profound gratitude to you for supporting my project. Additionally, you can pick and choose any rewards you would like from previous tiers. Limited quantities do not apply for you.
$500 - When you are next in my geographical proximity, I will take you out to lunch or dinner to discuss video games, life, and how awesome you are for backing Kingcraft. Seriously. You are awesome. Includes anything you want from previous tiers.
Units in Kingcraft are designed to be simple and easily managed. The game’s depth and complexity come from how you combine unit types and how they interact with your opponent’s strategies.
More coming soon! If you back me at or above the $80 tier, your design will be featured here!
The world of Kingcraft is filled with baddies. Bandit hoards, evil cults, and crazed warlords from every corner of the world are looking for a fight. Unfortunately for them, you are also looking for a fight. As you travel from place to place, you will find groups of these baddies doing baddie things.
Saving towns from baddies will earn the local’s favor. Territories you protect will support you with troops and supplies so you can keep protecting them. Leave them unprotected, and they will be sacked by bandits!
Stages in Kingcraft are all based on an isometric grid. Each tile can have a different height. Units can move from tile to tile if they can jump high enough. Stages will appear in a wide range of sizes, and, depending on the size, different numbers of units will be allowed. A large stage might host a 5v5 or 3v3v3 battle, while smaller stages will host only 4v4s or 3v3s
The voxel art style of Kingcraft is highly compatible with grid-based stages. I can start from a simple checkerboard, add height, and then add finer details without obscuring the grid. This way, I can create stylish stages, and still convey information about the terrain to the player.
I’ve been making games my whole life. From board games to flash games to pencil-and-paper-during-english-class games, I’ve tried to make everything into a game. Only now, however, have my art and programming skills developed to the point where I am ready to share my games. I have what it takes to bring this game to the level of polish you deserve. Backers, you’ve put your faith in me and I am going to make you the best game I’ve ever made.
Risks and challenges
As my video shows, I already have the art-style nailed down, and the game’s mechanics designed. Most of what remains is implementing and balancing the remaining units and scenarios. As a sort of quality safety-net, backers will be giving me constant feedback on my creations.
Based on the work I have completed, I have a pretty good idea of how long it takes to create new content. Unfortunately, software developers are notorious for their poor time-estimation skills. Luckily, the Kickstarter structure allows for a high degree of transparency. If I have to delay the release of Kingcraft, backers will know the exact cause of the delay and when they should expect the game’s release.
Transparency fosters confidence, and I intend for the development of Kingcraft to be a highly-transparent process.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
