UPDATED: This is it. We're making a Veronica Mars movie! Now the only question is: how big can we make it? We need your help!
Now available in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, UK.
OFFICIAL T-SHIRT DESIGNS ADDED! PICTURES & DETAILS BELOW! AND YES, IT IS POSSIBLE TO GET BOTH T-SHIRT DESIGNS - SEE THE FAQ FOR MORE INFO!
WE DID IT, MARSHMALLOWS! With six hours to spare, we shattered the last record we were aiming for, passing 87,143 to become the Kickstarter with the all-time highest number of backers.
Let's review our accomplishments for a moment, shall we?
- Fastest project to reach $1 million.
- Fastest project to reach $2 million.
- All-time highest-funded project in FILM category.
- Third highest-funded project in Kickstarter history.
- Most project backers of any project in Kickstarter history.
And we suspect there might be others. You're simply amazing.
As a token of our appreciation to the 90,000+ backers who have helped us raise more than $5.6 million to support the film, we're excited to announce that all backers pledging $10 or more will get an additional reward: a sheet of exclusive Veronica Mars stickers designed just for our backers. We're finalizing the designs, but we expect them to look a lot like this:
Check back here every day for more announcements and new rewards, and help us make the Veronica Mars movie we (and you) have been waiting for. LoVe and Gratitude - Rob, Kristen & The Team

NEW!!! Official T-Shirt Designs!
Great news! We've got official t-shirt designs to share, and we couldn't be more excited about them. Backers at $25 and above will get to choose from two options.
The first is California Noir, featuring the world's sassiest detective back in action.
The second is called Mini-Blinds, and takes a more subtle approach.
Both t-shirt designs are black, and printed on unbelievably soft, beautiful materials. These are not never-to-be-worn t-shirts, we guarantee. These are the real deal. When the Kickstarter campaign ends, after we've had a little time to organize the results, we'll get in touch backers so you can tell us your preferred design, size, etc.
Updates from Rob & Kristen!
We are in the home stretch now, Marshmallows! And here's the new situation: our not-so-secret ambition is to have more backers than any Kickstarter drive in history. To do that we just need to get past Double Fine Adventure's 87,142 backers. We just need 23,000 more backers.
So, starting right now, we're adding an official $1 donor level. Get your friends to climb aboard, and help us make history! Also, starting today, Kickstarter backers are going to begin receiving exclusive for-your-eyes only content. You can get in on that with a simple $1 pledge! (And of course, if you've already donated, you're already on the exclusive update gravy wagon.) Plus, there'll be a backers-only treat tomorrow. I promise.
You guys are the best. Keep it up. Our love is epic. - Rob
Well, there's no other way to say it: wow. We asked for help, and you came through in the biggest way. It's hard to believe how fast we shattered some of Kickstarter's biggest records, but that's what you guys do. Us? We're just excited and grateful, and thrilled that so many of you want to go back to Neptune with us. But you know what? Now that we know what's possible, there's more work to do. $2,000,000 is just the beginning! We've got 30 days, and the more we raise, the bigger and better this movie will be. So, let's not pop the cork on this champagne yet. We still need you! Please keep it up, and we'll keep working to deserve your support.
11 hours, you guys? Seriously? It only took you 11 HOURS to cross 2 million dollars? You speedy little marshmallows :) Words can't even express how excited we are. You came through, and I'll keep my promise too. We're going to make the best Veronica Mars movie anyone ever made, and the movie YOU deserve. Because YOU made this happen. But there's still time, and the more we raise, the better we can make it. All of the money you pledge this month goes right back into making this movie the one you've been waiting for, and the movie we've been waiting to make. So call your friends. Rally the troops. Lets break another record.
Day 1: Messages from Rob & Kristen
Almost since Veronica Mars went off the air, there's been talk of making a movie. In that span, I've taken different tactics in dealing with the question of whether it might happen. To be clear, I've always wanted to make a Veronica Mars movie. I love writing these characters and working with these actors. Kristen Bell has always wanted to make the movie.
There was a moment, a few years ago, when we thought we had a real shot at making it happen. I developed a pitch that revolved around graduation day at Hearst college -- Wallace and Mac were graduating at least, Veronica had been sidetracked by freeing Keith from prison. Plus, there was a murder in Neptune that was affecting the beach city's spring break business in much the same way a great white shark affected the beach community of Amity. I probably stoked fan fervor in my optimistic comments about the prospects. Warner Bros. wasn’t convinced there was enough interest to warrant a major studio-sized movie about Veronica and the project never got off the ground.
After that, I tried to tamp down expectations. I didn't want to be guilty — at least not twice — of building up hope when the odds seemed so long. Still, without fail, in every interview I do or every place I speak, I get the "will there be a Veronica Mars movie?" question. Even after a couple of years of downplaying the chances, I'd still run across blog postings headlined, "will Rob Thomas shut up about the Veronica Mars movie, already!" I was trying to. I promise.
I first found out about Kickstarter a couple of years ago from an Austin musician friend of mine — Robert Harrison, lead singer of Cotton Mather, the band that gave us "Lily Dreams On," our closing song of season 1. He financed a rerelease of the band's fantastic Kontiki album. Later, I was marveling about Kickstarter with another buddy of mine who said off-handedly, "You should use Kickstarter to raise the money to make the Veronica Mars movie." I chuckled. That seemed like a silly idea in the moment. We'd need millions. But for the next few weeks, the notion was never far from my mind. I started doing the proverbial back-of-a-cocktail-napkin math. The average pledge on Kickstarter is $71. Hell, if we could get 30,000 people to give the average donation, we could finance the movie, particularly if the cast and I were willing to work cheap. The most common donation amount on Kickstarter is $25. Surely, 80,000 of our three million viewers would find that price-point viable!
Of course, Warner Bros. still owns Veronica Mars and we would need their blessing and cooperation to pull this off. Kristen and I met with the Warner Bros. brass, and they agreed to allow us to take this shot. They were extremely cool about it, as a matter of fact. Their reaction was, if you can show there’s enough fan interest to warrant a movie, we’re on board. So this is it. This is our shot. I believe it's the only one we've got. It's nerve-wracking. I suppose we could fail in spectacular fashion, but there's also the chance that we completely revolutionize how projects like ours can get made. No Kickstarter project ever has set a goal this high. It's up to you, the fans, now. If the project is successful, our plan is to go into production this summer and the movie will be released in early 2014.
Life has taken Veronica away from Neptune. In the years since spoiling Keith's chances to be reelected sheriff, Veronica hasn't taken a case. But something big is about to bring her back home and back to her calling. My goal is to include as many of your favorite characters as possible. It is, after all, time for Veronica’s 10-year high school reunion. Keep in mind that the more money we raise, the cooler movie we can make. A two million dollar fundraising total probably means cross words are exchanged at the class reunion. Three million? We can afford a full-on brawl. Ten million? Who knows... For some reason the Neptune High class reunion takes place on a nuclear submarine! A Hobbit shows up! There’s a Bollywood end-credit dance number! I’ve always wanted to direct Bill Murray. We’ll figure out something cool. Hey, if that total goes high enough, I’ll bet the good folks at Warner Bros. will agree a sequel is a good idea.
Thanks to everyone who hasn't lost faith.
Day 1: A Message from Kristen
I am currently the happiest blonde in a hamster ball the world has ever seen. We have been waiting so long to make this movie dream a movie reality, and it’s because of YOUR commitment, YOUR persistence, that we finally have a chance. We just have one more step to go.
You have banded together like the sassy little honey badgers you are and made this possibility happen. i promise if we hit our goal, we will make the sleuthiest, snarkiest, it’s-all-fun-and-games-‘til-one-of-you-gets-my-foot-up-your-ass movie we possibly can.
I promise to give it my all. i promise to work my hardest to give everyone a little bit more Veronica, and i will be oh so honored to do so.
I only ask for one thing in return.
If I ever die, do me a favor. Go on Oprah and tell the world that I loved kittens.
LoVe to you ALL,
More Countries! More Continents!
Our first nine reward levels are now available to backers in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the UK and the USA. (But please note that additional charges for international shipping might apply!) Thank you so much for your patience. We're so happy to have you aboard.
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
The Veronica Mars movie project faces the usual risks of film and TV production — what if Kristen Bell joins a cult bent on the destruction of visual media? What if gangland enforcers break Rob’s typing fingers? Never fear: we are offsetting those risks with production insurance, contingency plans, and a production team with decades of experience.
One of our biggest challenges is coordinating schedules. We only have a few weeks to shoot and most of our cast members have additional obligations. We’re going to do our best to coordinate everyone’s availability, and we think we’ve figured out timing that works for most of the cast. We’re going to do our best to include as many of your favorite characters as possible (we know that’s important!) but it’s possible that some actors won’t be available during our shooting window.
Distribution is always a challenge with low-budget films, but Warner Bros. is going to help us distribute the movie, and try to get it out there as widely as possible.
With respect to rewards fulfillment, we will be working with a professional fulfillment partner to get all your DVDs, digital downloads, and other goodies delivered safely and on schedule.
I’ll be sending regular updates about our progress to all backers, so you’ll be the first to know about what’s going on.
Important Information About Rewards
· Kickstarter campaign and rewards fulfillment limited to U.S. and Canada.
· Travel, lodging and transportation to events and set visits not included in any reward bundle
· Must be over 18 or accompanied by a parent or legal guardian to attend events (premiere, set visit)
· Some rewards may require additional paperwork (to protect us and you)
· Distribution schedule not finalized, but Kickstarter backers at $35 and above will receive a digital version of the film within a few days of the theatrical premiere. Digital version available through Flixster. We may add other popular digital retailers and we’ll keep you posted.
We’ll begin pre-production as soon as the Kickstarter campaign ends (if we reach our goal). In fact, The movie will be shot over the summer and post-production will happen in the fall.
Our goal is to release the movie in early 2014. We intend to release the film theatrically in as many cities and theaters as possible. We’ll also try to prioritize cities where our Kickstarter support is coming from. And all Kickstarter backers above $35 will get their digital copies within a few days of the film’s theatrical release.
You’ll be able to get your digital version through Flixster (and possibly other popular digital retailers—we’ll keep you posted)). We will send you an email with a code and redemption instructions for your choice when the digital version is ready.
As you can tell, we’ve tried to come up with a variety of cool rewards. Because there are so many different items, and because we don’t know how many backers we’ll end up with, we don’t know exactly when each item will ship. But we do have a ballpark idea for each item:
Updates will begin during the Kickstarter campaign. They’ll continue until the film is released.
T-shirts will ship shortly after the Kickstarter campaign ends. We need to get your size information and print the T-shirts, so it will take a little time. But we hope to get them sent out in May.
First three seasons of Veronica Mars DVDs will be sent out around the same time as the T-shirts.
Set visits will occur during our filming window of June-July 2013.
Video greetings and voicemails will be recorded on-set and will be delivered to you in the fall. We may be able to get some of them done sooner, but no promises.
Posters (signed and unsigned) will be ready sometime between shooting and the film’s release. So you’ll probably receive your poster in late 2013.
The premiere and after-party will occur shortly before the film’s theatrical release. That’s a long time away, and we’ve got a lot of schedules to coordinate, so we can’t say for sure when these will get scheduled. But our best guess is January 2014. We’ll keep you posted, of course.
The pdf of the shooting script will be emailed to you the day the film is released.
Digital versions of the film will be available within a few days of the film’s release. We’ll know more about the exact timing as the release date approaches and we’ll keep you posted.
DVDs and Blu-Ray combo packs will be shipped a month or two after the theatrical release.
Once we’ve confirmed our filming schedule and location -- LA? San Diego? Baton Rouge? Vancouver? -- we will send you a list of dates to choose from. Please note that travel is not included, so you’ll be responsible to get to the set. Once you arrive, we’ll show you a good time. You’ll get to spend the day, see some filming, be in a scene or two as an extra, and meet some of the cast. Every day is different on set, so we can’t tell you exactly what to expect. But you’ll get to see the nitty gritty of the making of a movie—and you’ll be a part of it!
We won’t finalize plans for the premiere and the after-party until we’re well into post-production. We can tell you that there will be premieres in Los Angeles, New York City and Austin, TX, and we can also tell you the Rob, Kristen and the rest of the cast and crew know how to throw down. Travel is not included, so all backers -- domestic and international -- are responsible for all travel and lodging arrangements. International backers are responsible for securing any necessary visas and approval by Homeland Security for entry into the U.S.
All funds will go into a Veronica Mars Movie Project production account which has been set up by Warner Bros. on our behalf.
If you purchase a screening, we will make arrangements to show the film at a theater near your hometown when the film is ready. We’ll work with you to coordinate dates and locations and make our best effort to find a theater nearby and a time that works. We’re going to try to do these screenings before the film’s release so you get to see it early, but we can’t promise that will work out in every case. But we’ll make sure you at least get your screening in the first week of the theatrical run.
That's not a question.
I hear you. Remember, it's noir. There aren't a lot of happy endings.
(Busily reworking super-grim ending.)
At this point, it's unlikely we'll be able to open up more countries, but it wasn't for lack of trying. We ran into a couple thorny issues. It wasn't not about the shipping cost. If it were that easy, we'd have done it, we promise.
I want to pledge, but I live outside of the 21 listed countries. Can I simply have my rewards sent to a friend in one of the listed countries, and have them ship them to me?
Not really. Our issue isn't with shipping. It has to do with how we accept money and ensuring digital distribution in each country. The full story is long and deathly boring. Here's the thing, we are working very hard to bring your country into the fold. That work is going on every day. We hope for good news soon.
No. Again, the thorny issues we're working out revolve around how we accept money (it's not as simple as you think it is) and lining up digital download partners around the world. What we're hoping to do is solve these issues soon and open up the drive country by country. It's like a big game of Risk. We are bent on world domination. Please bear with us.
Thousands and thousands of questions have come in. We are diving into the them. The easy ones we're trying to answer quickly. Some of them are things we never considered, and we're having to drill down a bit. We will get to them all.
Yes. We'll follow up with backers when we are ready to deliver rewards. You will give us your address then.
Yes. We will send you a form asking where you'll want rewards shipped when they're ready to go.
Are pledges cumulative for the drive's duration? If I donate $100 three times, am I eligible for a $300 reward or would I get three $100 rewards?
Donations do not add up this way. If you change your mind and want to get a more expensive reward, make sure there are still rewards available at that dollar amount, cancel your first order, then make the new higher-dollar choice.
We'll follow up with backers when we are ready to deliver your rewards. We'll get all the sizes and design preferences then.
Sadly, no. It's a work permit thing.
We expect to add new rewards right up until the final day of the campaign. Remember, if you see a new tier you like, you can always change your pledge to sign up for the new one. Be sure to change both the amount you are pledging AND select the new reward.
Yes. We're building a couple extra days into every actor's deal to handle nothing but signing stuff. They know when they sign aboard the Veronica Mars movie that this is part of the deal. Kristen has a great attitude about this, "It'll be a party! It'll be fun!" I think the first thousand might be fun. The rest will be the Bataan Death March, but we're committed. We're doing it.
Region 1 for United States and Canada. Region 2 for Europe. Region 4 for Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, and Mexico.
Yes! We've figured out an option so that you CAN get both t-shirts if you don't want to choose between them. Just add an extra $25 (USA) or $35 (international) to any pledge above $25, and we'll be able to send you one of each! (Sorry about the higher price for our backers outside the USA. Unfortunately, it's needed to cover the higher overseas shipping costs. We love all of you equally, we promise.)
When we get in touch to collect your size and design preferences, you'll be able to let us know if you contributed extra and would like both t-shirts. It's a little extra work for us, but baby, you're totally worth it.
While we aren't able to offer a different set of women's sizes for the t-shirts, backers who select to receive t-shirts will be able to choose from XS, S, M, L, XL and XXL sizes.
We did research the possibilities for offering different women's sizes, but it just wasn't feasible.
(But believe us ladies, the shirts are still going to look amazing on you.)
Great question, especially for those of you working under pseudonyms. Luckily, we've thought of everything. When we contact our backers to get shipping preferences, t-shirt sizes and other fulfillment details, we'll let you choose whether you want to be thanked on the website, and if so, what name you'd like to use.
(Fair warning: if your name is Seymour Butts, we might ask to see a birth certificate.)
No one will be thanked against their will. When we contact you to ask for your reward preferences, you'll have a chance to tell us if you'd rather not be named on the website. Either way, though, we'll still be grateful to you. You're stuck with us there, friend.
You're right. We've raised a lot more than the initial $2 million, and we know it's a lot of money. But for a feature length movie, it's still a pretty conservative budget. Everything that's been pledged beyond the initial $2 million gives us more options, and for that we're eternally grateful. The simple answer? More backing means more locations, more sets, more actors, and most important of all, more shooting days.
That additional money could mean the difference between a movie that lasts 90 minutes, and one that lasts 110. It could also mean the difference between us shooting in Southern California, where the series was shot, and in a less expensive location somewhere else.
To be clear, we can't make guarantees yet about how long the movie will be, or exactly where we will shoot, and the last thing we want is to make a promise we can't keep. But what we can promise is this: the more we end up with, the more freedom we'll have, and the better our movie will be. That's what this is about.
You're sweet to ask, but Jason is married and Kristen is engaged. They both have children. Their partners wouldn't feel so good about that. You're going to find someone who is perfect for you, we just know it.
