About this project
THE WAX TRAX! STORY
My name is Julia Nash. My brother, Aaron, and I welcome you to the WAX TRAX! MONUMENTARY funding page. As some of you may know, our father Jim Nash along with his wonderful partner of 20-plus years, Dannie Flesher created and ran the legendary music store and label known as WAX TRAX! RECORDS.
Although our two dads have long passed, we are in the process of bringing to you a very inside look that chronicles their impact and life's work on film. Our narrative not only details the bizarre path and timeline of two men pushing culture forward, but also an intimate peek behind the curtain of dysfunction and chaos that fueled their indie rise as well as reasons behind the tragic demise that left the label discarded and abandoned. We are very excited and proud to assemble the pieces as viewers take a closer look inside the incredible WAX TRAX! story.
With the inclusion of fans and supporters during this campaign, we will be one step closer in telling the thorny story of a store & label that overlapped new genres of art and music during the 1980s. Upon completion this year, the master plan will be to make the rounds at film festivals as well as a DVD release and digital streaming.
WHAT WE NEED AND WHAT YOU GET
The film, including 40-plus interviews of artists, staff and family has already been shot. The "heavy lifting" has been done, but we are now focused on a funding goal of 45k to complete this current phase of post-production. Our goal will be used primarily for crucial stuff like color correction, audio mixing, and music clearance.
We are very happy to be able to pass along some nice extras for those of you who would like to get involved with our project. We are excited to offer exclusive and limited movie merchandise, from the deluxe "Kickstarter ONLY" movie soundtrack to vintage collectables from our archives, as well as some very special face time with the artists that helped define the WAX TRAX! world.
For those of you not completely familiar with WAX TRAX! RECORDS, the label was largely responsible for fusing punk, glam & electronic music and pushing club culture into a much darker and heavier place on the dance floor. WAX TRAX! artists such as FRONT 242, MY LIFE WITH THE THRILL KILL KULT, MINISTRY, KMFDM, COIL, FRONT LINE ASSEMBLY and so many others, created an entirely new genre, now commonly referred to as Industrial music. The label’s reach and influence during the '80s & '90s was global.
In 2011 we reignited the fire, rejoining many of the past WAX TRAX! artists into a special 33 1/3 year anniversary of the store and label called the WAX TRAX! RETROSPECTACLE. The event was an amazing tribute to my dad & Dannie’s vision with three sold out Chicago shows. The success and outpouring of love at the RETROSPECTACLE is what initially sparked us to tell the WAX TRAX! story.
Every bit of the making of this documentary has come from a very special and personal place. Friends, family and artists of the label & store have laid it all out there on film, warts and all. We hope you will join us in this labor of love to tell the story of two very special men and their unique place in pop-culture history.
OTHER WAYS YOU CAN HELP
We understand that not everyone is able to contribute financially, and that’s totally okay. Over the decades, you have all shown my father, Dannie, and everyone here at WT HQ that without a doubt WAX TRAX! fans are the most loyal and devoted fans in the world. We need your help now to spread the word and let people know about this project.
Thank you for all your support!
Risks and challenges
The biggest challenge right now is sticking to our production schedule.
Our goal is to debut the film at the next SXSW Film Festival. If you fund the project, we will be able to finish our post-production work on schedule, and have the film ready to submit to the festival.
There's a very skilled team working behind the scenes: We chose to work with Joe Losurdo & Christina Tillman from Regressive Films after seeing their superb documentary “You Weren’t There: A History of Chicago Punk, 1977–1984”.
For helping us make this possible, your tangible rewards (t-shirts, posters, etc.) will be sent out by the WAX TRAX! mail order posse. We have years of experience with fulfillment, but most importantly if you have any questions or concerns you will be dealing directly with us...no third parties involved. Many elements of the rewards will most likely be fulfilled before the primary estimated date of November 2015, but if we run into any unexpected production issues, we will keep you updated of any changes.
For those of you who are attending an event such as lunch or our Chicago screening, we will do our best to keep you updated on our schedule and specific directions. The screening date is still to be determined. Once we have a firm date, we will give you as much advanced information as possible for those traveling from out of town.
THE FINE PRINT
This fundraising campaign is all subject to applicable Kickstarter rules/regulations and applicable law. In the case of any potential conflicts, we will work with you in good faith to give you a substitute reward.
To boil it down, making a documentary is a labor of love with a ton of unknowns. We started with a crazy story about two of the most important people in my life. Then, we put together the best team possible, contacted the artists, friends & family affected by WAX TRAX!. At the end of the day, we will have told the WAX TRAX! RECORDS story the right way and that is something to be proud of. It's a fun ride, and I thank you in advance if you can help make this odyssey possible.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
