Writing a novel takes up a whole era in a writer's life, and when the labor is done she no longer is the person she was at the start.
Henry James had the power to see what was imminent in the United States and what laid behind the present, not the history but the recipe and its creation.
Leslie Silko is a prophet, a reader of signs.
Samuel Beckett a conduit of the vast and overwhelming mind soul of the universe. He believes in humanity.
I write in the oral tradition, part of the grand dialogue.
Connections between people and place.
Recognition of people and stories.
Direction: How to get home, when there is no home to go home to.
At this moment everything is about life and choice. The choice of life over honor. The choice, today, is honor, and still the ending of Kafka's Trial expresses my life best: "Logic is no doubt unshakable, but it can't withstand a person who wants to live."
Relationships are strained, especially those with and among artists. This project takes that knowledge and places relationships at the center: relationships between me and my backers, relationships between me and the visual artist. We will shape the work together. Backers will witness and participate in the choices we make. Every piece of art, every moment of life is about choice, this project makes that explicit and records the process via blogs and letters.
I invite you to be a part of this project, to hold a piece of it, and to shape it.
Many say the days of Paris are gone, no one cares about writing, no one cares about novels, whatever you do you should do it for fun, meaning for free. Your labor is not labor—everyone else has to work for a living.
This is what I do.
I am a voice in between. This body of work exists in the space in between as well—this project is a life, and the connection between lives, not a product in isolation, and not a life in isolation either. I will be changed by the process and my hope is for you to be changed too.
Together we have the power to create. You can support this project. You can support a devoted and disciplined life.
The substance of this project originates in my fundamental belief in original art and artists, and the essential connection between artists and audience.
I am not turning my back on audience. I believe in you. This Kickstarter moment is what creates this art. If I do not reach my funding goal I will not receive one dollar of anything pledged. This is an all or nothing program. I will not and cannot do this alone. I need you.
This is my philosophy, it is true and honest.
1. I will write a novel exploring the above themes. I keep a rigorous writing and reading schedule. You will be backing my writing at the most basic level. Everyone backing at the $25 or more level will receive a final copy of the novel in electronic form.
2. The visual artist, Niki Lee, will create 4 inch by 6 inch pieces of art, while reading the novel, while it is being written. These pieces will be sent to Coltrane backers (and above) as they are created. Each piece will be an original work of art. We will not mass produce images. We believe that you do not know a piece of work until you have lived with it. She will be making a relationship to the novel and we invite you to make a relationship with the art she then creates. These are Kickstarter Exclusives. These will not be available any where else, at any other time.
3. The visual artist, Niki Lee, will also create four (4) Artist Books, each with a cover, chapter illustrations and selected text. These books will not be mass produced. She will be working with me as I write, and the books will be hand delivered to Beckett funders, where I will also read from the novel itself. These are Kickstarter Exclusives. These will not be available any where else, at any other time.
Several short pieces are posted at Reid Gómez' black blog: http://reidgomez.blogspot.com/
I named each reward in honor of a writer who has influenced this project directly, and my writing in general. I have been writing small pieces about each author and my choices. You can read these in the Red Room http://redroom.com/member/reid-gomez/blog
