The Bird & The Bee Bumper Arena is the spot where flowers, bees, birds and butterflies dance, fly, crash, and bump. @ Burning Man 2012
This year's art theme for Burning Man is Fertility 2.0, and I thought it would be somewhat appropriate to bring out a large game about bumping into each other for mutual enjoyment (It's cool, the cars are wearing rubbers). The Bird & The Bee Arena will feature a fleet of four to six decked out pedal powered bumper cars, each car modeled after a bird or a bee, a butterfly, a dragonfly, a flower, or any of the beautiful creatures whose bright colors in spring are the standard bearers of fertile land. Pedal power is perfect for bumper cars; it's all the fun and excitement of a standard set on a fraction of the emissions and infrastructure.
And finally, the coup-de-grace, the capper, the rug that really ties the room together: a Carnival-style Mega-Arena, blazing with colorful lights (not fire...not yet...) and decked out with images and sculptures depicting fertile creatures of fantasy. Check out the concept model:
I have the workspace, the design, the tools, and the team. I just need some help funding this thing, and we're home. Also we are always looking for more volunteers, please get in touch if you'd like to help out. I've built a prototype of the drivetrain and framing system which you can see a picture of below or in action in the video, so I know it works, it's just down to polishing and production.
The total cost has been calculated between six and seven thousand dollars, based on materials cost, transportation of the bumper bikes to the playa, and cost of fulfilling kickstarter rewards. All labor is volunteer; there will be no cost to the project from labor. No money will go to tickets or entry fees. We will make this project happen whether or not the kickstarter goal is met; however, the total costs will be $6,000-$7,000, so I'd like to take the opportunity in advance to thank you from the bottom of my heart for any help you are able to provide, financial or otherwise... donate, volunteer, spread the word!
And we need that help right now. Work started on this project in January and will continue non-stop until it's done and set up on the Playa!
This will be my second year at Burning Man. 2011 was my first, and I want to bring something amazing with me this time. I was lucky enough to get a ticket in the lottery this year and I want to live up to that. I know I have what it takes to make this happen; I will make this happen, one way or another. I hope you can help!
