Spiffy modular cases!

Posted by Stephen and Stacy Wylie (Devino) (Creator)

Initial case designs have been 3D printed and tested on the Gen 2 prototypes!  For this run, we used orange ABS plastic.  There are a variety of colors available at the Dallas Makerspace, but that doesn't really matter; we're working with manufacturers to make injection-molded cases locally.  Whoever buys the Gen 1 & Gen 2 protos will get 1 orange case apiece (the same ones pictured here) and the rest in the color of their choice (among what's available), for which we'll ask prior to shipment.  Gen 1 & 2 backers can also select the injection-molded ones, but we can't guarantee the variety of colors there. ;)

We'll be posting the 3D model on Thingiverse at www.thingiverse.com/LEDgoes in case you want to print your own anyway.  Stay tuned for this soon, after we correct an error with our model!

* Wall mounting holes will be added later.

We will offer them on Makertronic once we get an Injection Mold done for the Injection Molding Machine.

We will also have Injection Molded cases available for the partner boards.

If that doesn't happen quick enough, we will have them on Ponoko and Shapeways so you can get a variety of materials and colors. We may also have 3D printed ones for sale on the site. Each Case uses appx. $0.45 in 1.75mm ABS or PLA and takes 20-30min to print depending on your printer and fill algorithm.

Injection Molds take quite a bit of time to do and tweaking. If we spend the *gulp* $4000 on the Solidworks (we have been using Sketchup Pro) that allows you to do Mold plans, we have a friend with a 250K CNC mill who would be wiling to run it for us as a VERY reasonable price. Considering having a Mold maker do each would be about $2k per mold..... it seems worthwhile.

Case looks awesome! Love the orange, are any of these being included in any pledge level except $500?
