What is Cogito?
Cogito is a fast-paced debate game designed to combine elements of popular games such as Uno, Magic the Gathering, and classic party games.
In the game, each player assembles a team of charismatic philosophers from across time and space for the ultimate philosophical showdown. In order to win, a player needs skill, foresight, cunning, and a little bit of luck. Each player puts together his or her team and battles for honor, glory, and control of the truth!
Our world is a crazy, complicated, place, and articulating our thoughts about it in a clear manner can be quite the overwhelming task.
But philosophy promotes a focus on clarity and logical thinking--in other words, it helps with the task of taking the tangled mess of thoughts, experiences, and ideas that we carry around with us and shaping it into organizable processes that we can use to help other people understand us. Philosophy trains people to take ANY problem, break it apart, understand it, and construct clear and creative solutions. Philosophers are people of the future (not just thinkers of the past!).
Why is Cogito useful?
At present, the current American education system tends to favor rote memorization, standardized testing, and classic book smarts as a means of teaching and learning. Skills like crativity and divergent thinking often end up being sacrificed to this aim (as others have already pointed out).
But in the "real world" that students encounter post-graduation, the demands change and emphasis is placed on collaboration and creativity, the opposite of what is taught in primary education.
It seems more and more apparent that in order to suitably prepare young people for the future, they need to learn critical thinking and analysis more than anything else. They need to learn the very skills that philosophy teaches: how to think for themselves and articulate those thoughts. But how do we teach people something that has the reputation for being boring and outdated?
That's where Cogito comes in! Cogito is a crazy, surprising, and challenging game that fosters a fun time while teaching players about themselves along the way.
Literature on education is loaded with studies that support the idea that the best learning is done through play because of its fun, careless, and self-motivated nature. We can teach anyone anything if we can foster an environment for intrinsic motivation by showing them that the given subject is engaging and worth spending time on. In other words, learning can equal play. So let's gamify how we learn!
About the Cards:
Each Cogito card is designed to have different crazy, fun, and occasionally mean abilities while representing and reflecting actual people and subjects within philosophy. The game balances a charming trio of gags, competitiveness, and intellectual ability. Players will experience game-play that quickly switches between moments of serious deliberation about the meaning of life to sudden requests to employ funny accents, all in one game.
How To Play:
Risks and challenges
Cogito is already completed in design and concept. The game has been thoroughly tested, and therefore only needs to be printed. Once the kick-starter process has been completed, the only risk lies in printing errors, in which case the printing company responsible simply would have to reprint the order. Should such a delay occur, then all backers will immediately be informed.
The Cogito cards wall have a QR-code on the back that will take the user to the affiliated website. This component is not vital to playing the game, but rather provides useful background information, and allows players to double check the rules should they be in doubt. The website also features a Q&A section should there be any aspects of the rules players are in doubt about. Should the player base request it, additional explanatory videos will be uploaded to the website to answer specific questions.
In case the web-hosting server breaks down or needs to be updated I will make sure that the problem will be solved as soon as possible, so that the technological aspect of the game is always working smoothly.
Cogito will have to be shipped to numerous locations in the country (and hopefully worldwide). Since it does happen at times that packages are lost, all shipments will be done with a tracking number and lost item insurance included in the price order.
