Winds of Change tells the story of Kaze, a warrior who overcomes instinct and low birth to gain the prestigious position of king’s guard and the notice of the crown princess of his homeland: Winds of Change is an epic story of romance, betrayal, magic, and destiny rewoven.
With the help of the Kickstarter community, we’re making the Kaze: Winds of Change audio drama freely available through YouTube, with supporting illustrations, musical score, and a full troupe of voice actors. In 2004 the animated short, Kaze: Ghost Warrior, opened a brief window into a kingdom that extended far beyond the 22-minute experimental film. With your support, we can throw the doors open and tell new stories in a rich, ancient world.
Kaze’s kingdom of Tjira draws from medieval Europe, North America’s First Nations, Art Nouveau illustrators like Maxfield Parrish, and modern fantasists like Hayao Miyazaki and Brian Froud to create a fantasy world with an “everywhen” quality; that universal, approachable feel of a fantasy that transcends time and place. But at its heart Tjira is a reflection of feudal Japan and China, a land with institutions and philosophies steeped in millennia of history.
The inhabitants of Tjira are anthropomorphic, possessing both human and animal qualities. Like us, they struggle to find compromise between their instinctual and civilized natures. A rare individual might embrace both qualities in some sort of balance; most wear a mask of refinement over instinctive prejudices.
The 2004 Kaze: Ghost Warrior animated film pressed the limits of what one person with dedication and a vision can accomplish. Armed with a pair of computers, a tight timetable of six months, and a $5,000 budget, Emily Amadhia Albee wrote, animated, voiced and scored the 22-minute Kaze short feature. The film’s lens is tightly focused: In a realm darkened by corruption, a lone warrior comes to town, looking for a foe from his past.
Pulling back the camera--looking at the world, the years leading up to Kaze’s quest, the betrayal that threw the kingdom into darkness and the trust that made it possible--telling a truly epic story takes a team.
Amadhia Albee, formerly known as Timothy Albee, wrote, animated, produced, voiced, and scored the original Kaze: Ghost Warrior short feature. In her career as an animator she worked with Disney, Activision, and others, winning a Peabody and team Emmy award for her work on Battlestar Galactia.
Amadhia works with the Silver Pony Players on their audio drama, "Equestria: Hidden History," as writer, director, and the voice of Equestria's royalty. She is currently debuting her new album, "Dreaming Out Loud."
D.C. King has been writing fiction, nonfiction, and poetry since elementary school, and has been published in anthologies, newspapers, and convention books. He is one of the principle writers for "Equestria: Hidden History," and mentors beginning authors on Alex Vance's "FurRag" website under the name Quinn Yellowfox.
Providing the personalities of Tjira and the characters of Winds of Change, we have the voice acting talents of Nico Janssen, Nicola Kinsman, and Amadhia. We're auditioning more acting talent, look for updates as the campaign progresses!
One of our goals in producing Kaze: Winds of Change is to tell Kaze's story collaboratively. To that end, several artists have joined the team to illustrate Winds of Change. If our fundraising goals for Kaze are fully realized, episodes 1&2 will feature artwork from Alector Fencer, Balaa, Bloodhound Omega, and Thornwolf.
Together, with a strong team and cast and the support of old and new friends, we’ll launch Kaze: Winds of Change. Our vision of Winds of Change is a series of 12 to 16 audio dramas, 20-30 minutes each, with at least a dozen black and white and color illustrations, musical score by Fox Amoore and Amadhia Albee, freely available on YouTube.
We're building Winds of Change on a strong foundation: our two project leads, Albee and King, share 27 years of writing, music, and media production, The scripts for episodes 1-4 of Winds of Change are complete, as is casting for four of the primary roles, and since we started launching the project, more offers of support have come from our community. Together, we're creating a rich and immersive experience of the first two episodes of Winds of Change, and building a community for future storytelling in Kaze's universe. Our biggest expense for Winds of Change is art and illustration.
Our initial goal of $500 covers software and equipment upgrades, travel, and promotional expenses. Beyond the base funds to produce and distribute episodes 1&2, funds raised from this kickstarter will be used to illustrate Winds of Change with work from a variety of artists, both to make the project deeper and more exciting, and to build a sense of collaboration and community around the ongoing project and subsequent stories in Tjira. The funding goals for the Winds of Change campaign, in detail:
Base Goal: Achieved! Winds of Change will be available through ITunes and similar platforms in audio format, and to our backers. But more importantly...

Recently we saw on Twitter, "You know you're addicted to crowdfunding if you spend real money to support free projects." While developing our Kickstarter campaign, we were thrilled to get an opportunity to return to animation! Declaration Pictures announced their intention to adapt Kaze for television as a new animated series, scheduled for pre-production in 2014 and release in 2015.
What does this mean? Every backer is meaningful. Fan interest, growing even after 10 years, played a key role in keeping Kaze alive and relevant, and we'll need that momentum and energy on the long and sometimes dangerous road from development to production. It's easy to say a $1 pledge is appreciated--and it is! But a show of support from our community is more important than ever before, with an animated series on the discussion table. Every +1, every "like," and every backer helps make the Kaze television series that much more likely.
One of the most gratifying parts of the Winds of Change project has been connecting with the friends Kaze’s made over the years. We've already had a very positive response in social media, but obviously this Kickstarter is a strong measure of how much support there is for dramatic storytelling in the world of Tjira.
Kaze's return to animation is in good hands now; our focus is on Winds of Change, and our goal is to successfully fund, illustrate, and produce the first episodes of Winds of Change, to begin securing art and music for E3&4 for and beyond with confidence in a future for the project, and build an online audience for the series.
The story of love, ambition, and betrayal of Winds of Change leads into the dark years surrounding the Ghost Warrior original short and Kaze’s unfinished quest. There’s no shortage of material for our actors, and plenty of story to tell.
Thank you for your support, and for joining us in Kaze's next chapter!
Risks and challenges
All dramatic projects have a number of risks associated with them: cast members can take ill, take new and better jobs, or just take off. Investors can back out; money can simply dry up.
We are blessed to be a part of a community rich with actors and artists, and our cautious timetable gives us the time and opportunity to recruit new voice actors and artists as needed. Further, Amadhia Albee has proven her ability to hold several key production roles and work within a tight budget; she is able to support the project with her own illustrations if funding for art falls short. While this approach steps away from our goal of collaborative art, it's a sound option if we have to reduce our primary expense.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
