"If I could only walk into someone making fun of geeks and nerds just so that I could have the pleasure of colorfully telling them 'how much they don't know about us' while handing them a copy of the Surreality Anthology 'Personality Complex' as their handbook to today's youth. Then I'll walk away but not before pitching a cool one-liner like, 'you need this'". - David Sanchez, Co-Host of Comics Remixed
"Caleb King is not your typical MPDG. That said, his alter ego, the blue-haired barista Sydney, is possibly the most manic of any pixie dream girl ever, the top-wrung of the pixie evolutionary ladder, as it were. Because unlike most MPDGs, Sydney hasn’t appeared from the aether to change some male character’s shitty mundane life; she hasn’t apparated to assist some sad Zach Braffish hipster. No, Sydney is on her own journey. And, so far, it has been a pretty remarkable ride." - David Pauwels, Writer/Creator of the web-comic Free Mars
"Surreality has been a smart, sexy, and surprisingly nerdy addition to webcomics. Caleb King and Carla Wyzgala have managed to create a cast of relatable characters that I look forward to catching up with on a weekly basis." - Joe Iannacone, Co-Host of Nerd Appeal
Art, geeks, music AND strong female characters you say? COUNT ME IN! Caleb and company are always funny, clever and straight forward with their storytelling. If they ever want to take this project live action… I definitely want to be the Producer! – Vincent Kustush, Producer of Isabella & Lucy
From Web-Comic to Hardcover Book!
Wow! It's been an awesome two years working on Surreality. What began as a kernel of an idea in art school has become a dream come true! Week after week we have been telling our story and our audience has been growing and growing. We are truly grateful and excited about the future of our comic!
We're now attempting to collect the first two chapters of Surreality into a single hardcover graphic novel in the hope of having materials to fund our continuing work on the web-comic. Since we are a three person team, we all are sacrificing to make it work. Please help us reach this goal and put our book in your hands at the same time!
What is Surreality?
Surreality is the story of Sydney, tattooed comic nerd of a girl in her mid-twenties who is going nowhere. She has no ambition. She has no goals. She works a dead end job. She's a gamer, pop culture consumer, sassy, boring, and manic.
She's a complicated girl.
To escape her boring and routine life, she creates fantasies and lives in her dreams. It is in one of these dreams that she encounters her own sub-conscious. This corpse-like version of herself reveals Sydney's true destiny, that of a dried-up and dying individual. Dream-Sydney pushes Sydney forward, informing her that if Sydney does not begin moving forward in life, then this is the future that awaits her.
Along for the ride are Sydney's friends Chase (a tattoo artist), Chloe (a rising star DJ), Malcomb (egotistical, self-centered rocker frontman), and Abbi (Sydney's older sister and sex kitten).
Witty, challenging, fun, sexy, and real, Surreality follows Sydney's journey from the whims of adolescence, to the triumphs of maturity. Created/written by Caleb King, Illustrated by Carla Wyzgala, and colored by Kat Guevara.
About Our Project:
Web-Comics are funny things. We chose to offer our content weekly and free to the viewer. There are no ads on our site. There is no profit making from our weekly endeavor. We do this for love of storytelling, both visually and with words.
We also know that one cannot simply put in a tremendous amount of work on a consistent basis without making money. It is an unfortunate reality. No matter how much we love what we do, we must generate income to fund and continue doing what we are doing.
This is where you all come in.
We're not looking for handouts, we want to earn your money. We're looking to collect the first two chapters of our weekly web-comic into a very slick and premium hardcover collection. Between the first two chapters of our comic, we have over eighty pages of story, not to mentions all the sexy and amazing pin-ups that artists have contributed to us. We have a TON of content. We want you to hold that content in your hands. We want to charge a fair price, and make it easy for you to get.
This hardcover book will not only be an amazing book, but it will help us generate income and keep doing what we love, that of making Surreality the best we can make it. We travel to conventions all around the United States selling copies of our first book Personality Complex (also a successfully funded KickStarter project!) as well as prints, personal commissions, stickers, and all sorts of other goodies. We want to add our ongoing story to that list.
So, all that said, let's get to the goodies. Most of you will opt in for the book (the whole point of this little endeavor), but there are some awesome incentives that will not only make you a very happy camper, but also serve to help us fund the snot out of this project! Here they are!
The Book (standard cover)!
- Tentacle-tastic variant cover by Caleb King - This is not the final cover art.
The Exclusive Print (This is the image, but the final text placement and all that detail oriented stuff is still up in the air).
COFFEE! Surreality Jitterz Roast will put some hair on your chest, and also cures male-pattern-baldness.
Oodles and oodles of original pages waiting for you to love them!
Did someone mention SCOTT BLAIR!?!!??!?! Get the Blair-Master himself to draw you something magnificent!
Chris Hamer! STOP! Hamer-Time!
We're having Chicago based printing company Kraken Print handle our plate-seperated printing. This will ensure as accurate and solid a translation of our digital pages into color. They're awesome!
Should we attain our funding goal, we have some awesome stretch goals in mind to keep things moving forward. Once we are close to our goal, we'll list these exciting packages. I know everyone will be excited about the additional goodies!
Risks and challenges
Obviously, funding is a risk. We will do our very best to promote and fund this project with your help, but if it is not successful, then we will have to seek alternative means to fund the book. We are excited about the reward levels for backers and are working closely with the vendors who are supplying our prints, books, and all other rewards to ensure the very best in quality.
Sketches, commissions, and all other custom works of art offered at reward levels could cause delays in shipping. We don't want to rush through your paintings and sketches, so things might get delayed a bit if you're a backer at one of those levels. We will try our very best to get them to you in a timely manner. We appreciate your patience in advance.
We do not anticipate any delay in shipping of items that are not associated with sketches and commissions. Yea for you guys!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
