                                                                -Roland Miller

Hello, I'm Roland Miller. I am a photographer and photo educator. I have been photographing space exploration-related programs, facilities, and people for over 25 years. Included in this photography is a project I entitled Abandoned In Place. Abandoned In Place is a photographic exploration of the American space launch and research facilities that played a crucial role in the early period of space exploration. The goals of this project are to preserve and portray these abandoned, deactivated, and repurposed sites through photography that surpasses the official government approach to documentation and to lend historical and artistic insight to the subject.

Abandoned In Place: The University of New Mexico Press
The University of New Mexico Press has selected Abandoned In Place for publication. The project has completed the press's peer review process and has been approved for publication. The plan is for an 11 by 13" book with approximately 100 color photographs from the Abandoned in Place series. The introduction is provided by Bob Thall, photography professor at Columbia College in Chicago. Dr. Roger Launius, Associate Director of Collections and Curatorial Affairs at the National Air and Space Museum, Smithsonian Institution, authored the foreword.

Abandoned in Place and Kickstarter

The purpose of the Abandoned in Place Kickstarter project is to raise the funding expected by the University of New Mexico Press. The press requires authors to assist in raising funds for their projects. This is a widespread practice (known as "subvention funding") among the university press/non-profit publishing community. The funds raised by this Kickstarter project will go to the University of New Mexico Press to print the book and fulfill rewards.

The Project
The project serves not only as a documentary body of work, but also as an artistic interpretation of these historic sites. The blockhouses, launch towers, tunnels, test stands, and control rooms featured in Abandoned In Place are rapidly giving way to the elements and demolition. By my estimates, fully half of the facilities I have photographed no longer exist. The costs involved in restoring, maintaining, and securing these sites are enormous. Most of these historic facilities are located on secure military or NASA facilities, which drastically limits access by the public. Therefore, photography is the only practical method to preserve and portray these historic locations.

Essays
Four authors contributed essays for Abandoned in Place. Also included in the book are three elegies by Ray Bradbury.

Dr. Betsy Fahlman is an art historian at Arizona State University. Dr. Fahlman, an expert in art relating to industry and technology, delivers a primer on the history of space imagery and documentation.

Craig Covault is a freelance aerospace journalist. Mr. Covault's essay details the progression of space launch and exploration programs at Cape Canaveral's Complexes 40 and 41 and how the launch complexes evolved through various projects and phases over time.

Colonel Pamela Melroy is a retired NASA astronaut and the second woman to command a Space Shuttle mission. Colonel Melroy’s essay discusses the history of Apollo One Launch Complex 34 and how it affected her work on the Space Shuttle Columbia Reconstruction Project Team.

Dr. Beth O’Leary is a space archeologist and Professor Emeritus of Archeology at New Mexico State University. Dr. O’Leary’s essay focuses on the “archaeological assemblage” created by Armstrong and Aldrin at the first lunar landing site and the ways in which it could be preserved for future generations.

Rewards
A wide range of rewards comprised of images from the Abandoned in Place series are available, as well as the book itself. Print sizes indicate the dimensions of the paper on which the image is printed. For matting and preservation purposes, the actual images will be slightly smaller on the paper with a white border along the edges. Photographs available through the Kickstarter campaign normally sell for much more than the reward level costs listed. Remember, you are only allowed to back the project one time, so back accordingly!

I have been printing on Hahnemühle paper exclusively for the past four years. I have been working with digital imaging since 1989, and I have not found another paper brand with the reliability, accuracy, and consistency of the Hahnemühle family of papers. I am a stickler for color and print quality (see my website, http://www.thetonesystem.com). I have also selected Hahnemühle papers for their superior surface qualities. Beyond print quality, it is essential to me to make prints that are color-stable, archival, and that will last as long as possible. Hahnemühle papers exceed my expectations in all of these criteria.

The Goal of $25,000
I set the goal at $25,000 to meet the funding requirements of the University of New Mexico Press and to cover the costs associated with the Kickstarter campaign and fulfilling rewards. If the campaign raises more than the goal, the money will be used to further defray costs associated with the book production and possibly, to increase the number of books printed.

I hope you will see this project worthy of support. I greatly appreciate your interest and I hope you will choose to back Abandoned in Place.

Thank you,

Roland Miller

Risks and challenges

Currently the biggest risk to this project is not making the funding goal. That is why I need your support.

This is not a self-published book. The University of New Mexico Press, the publisher, has taken the manuscript through the peer review and faculty committee approval processes. I waited until this level of approval was met before releasing the Kickstarter campaign specifically to limit the possibility that approval would not be given. The next hurdle, as far as the press goes, is raising the subvention funding. If the press backed out after the Kickstarter campaign was successful, I would then find another publisher, self-publish the book, or return the funds collected. Again, at this point in the approval process, there is little chance of the press backing out.

Another issue that might arise is the reward delivery date being delayed due to the book production process. I have attempted to determine an accurate date and even included some cushion. My hope is that the book would actually arrive several months before the anticipated delivery date. If the delivery date slipped, I would make every effort to keep the backers informed.

Those are my two main concerns since I directly control the reward creation and distribution, besides the book itself.
