Update: I've added new rewards!! Also, check my website for examples of my past work including: covers of magazines, NKOTB, and Lady Gaga.
I stopped in Burma for a few days last year, and produced a series of photographs that have been touring around Australia in an exhibition called 256 Portraits of Aung San Suu Kyi. The exhibition has been raising funds and awareness for refugee programs on the Thai/Burma border.
With your help, I want to return to Burma, this time for longer, to produce a series of photos that I will compile into a book and exhibition for people who left the country during its several decades of turmoil.
In addition, I aim to produce a number of short documentary style multimedia pieces about topics and issues I encounter on the road. You can view past examples of the multimedia pieces I made in Bangladesh in 2012, below.
I will be visiting orphanages and houses for the poor in Burma, and will be making multimedia pieces like the ones above. I hope to raise awareness for issues that are often overlooked. I will be giving back to the community in thoughtful, socially responsible ways during my travels.
Backers can choose their rewards from the images on my website: http://clairealexander.smugmug.com
I will be sending rewards out as soon as I get back from Burma. Photographic prints will be made on high quality, lustre paper, and shipped from the photo lab (for backers in the USA) or myself (for backers everywhere else in the world). Postcards will be hand written and personalized, straight from my pen to you.
I work professionally as a photographer and am formally trained in digital photomedia and post-production. I have a highly developed process when it comes to selecting and editing images, and all images offered as rewards will be edited, cropped where necessary, color corrected, and printed on high quality paper ready for framing.
I hope offer backers rewards that are tailored to offer something for everyone.
My $5 reward level is a great paperless option which gives you access to my photos through popular social media sites. I will maintain these accounts for long after my trip.
My $25 reward level gives you a postcard of one of my photos, signed and sent to you with gratitude! Hang it in your cubicle, on your wall, or on your fridge.
For $40, I will send you something that I bought specifically for you in Burma (you'll get to chose through I survey I send you) My gifts will be sourced responsibly from local artisans.
At the $100 reward level, you will receive the book of images I produce as a result of the trip. It will be a unique, hard cover, limited edition book, printed on high quality lustre paper, planned and laid out by me.
Why do I need the money, and where's it going?
After working full time, behind a desk in the area of Native Title, I started a degree in Photography in 2011 (Grad Dip in Photomedia). I thought it would compliment my degrees in Anthropology (BA. Hons, MA) and allow me to produce stories I think are important out into the world.
Over the last few years, I've been traveling to remote and out-of-the-way places, and creating images and stories that I feel are important. Through these, I hope to spread awareness and raise funds to help people who struggle with various forms of inequality.
I need your help as my travel is solely funded by small grants and arts scholarships. To complete this project I need a boost (or kickstart, if you will) from Kickstarter to help me embark on my next journey. My expenses will include airfare, day to day travel, and simple accommodations (at times, shared, open-air dwellings), as well as media storage.
I hope backers will enjoy the rewards I offer. To get a sense of my style and topics I am drawn to, please take a look at my website and the videos posted above. My images will be a mix of people, landscapes, local industry, cultural practices, buildings of importance, small dwellings, religious rituals and social gatherings.
I shoot with a Canon EOS Digital Camera and analogue medium format camera (Bronica). I will be developing and printing my own negatives when I return to Australia.
Where will I be going?
I'll be going as far as I can, based on the amount of funding I get. Here's the initial plan: Rangoon, Pathein, Inle Lake, Maymyo, Mandalay, The Temples of Bagan, The Sacred Mt Popa, and back to Rangoon. I'm sourcing local stories, and have mad a number of solid contacts already. You won't be disappointed with the images and stories I bring back!
Risks and challenges
I don't foresee any major risks or challenges in completing this project. I have made several trips to Asia, and have always found creative ways around issues that arose. If I do encounter problems after my project is funded, I will not fail to fulfill my backer incentives.
I may encounter internet access issues in rural areas, but I don't expect to be 'out of range' for more than a week at a time, and will be able to update backers as soon as I have internet at my next stop along the way.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
