Axethrower is a multiplayer arena game where you have each other using a shared weapon. Your goal is to grab the only weapon available, throw it at your enemies and score points. The catch? When you throw it, you give other players the chance to pick it up and throw it back at you!

This is the shared weapon aspect of the game.

The game revolves around the Great Axe Tournament where competitors from all around the Cubiverse compete with each other for wealth and glory! The Cubiverse is a big and largely unknown place for now. Every day new reports of planets and life forms come in.

Axethrower will be available for Windows, Macintosh & Linux.

This means Axethrower will feature an ever-growing set of worlds, levels and game modes. You might even have a hand designing new worlds!

As mentioned above, Axethrower is a multiplayer platform arena game. It will become playable online as well as offline. The main goal of the game is to score more points then your competitors, you do this by hitting with a throwing weapon. But! There is only one weapon in the arena! Meaning, that when you throw the weapon at a player to score points, you also lose it. Making it available for another player to pick it up and throw it themselves. Quick players could even catch the weapon mid-air! So make sure every throw counts!

Below are some gifs that break down the gameplay in five simple steps:

This set-up of mechanics results in a fast paced cat-and-mouse game. Players are constantly moving and trying to avoid the player holding the weapon while the player with the weapon chases the others. This all changes when the weapon is thrown, then everybody goes for the weapon like a madman. As soon as one player has the weapon, the situation changes again. This balance is often interrupted by a quick player that catches the axe out of the air.

To win the game you need the weapon, but to get the weapon means danger (you are often in range of the weapon holder). You don’t get the axe, and no points, if you try to stay away from it. The constant change of these situations is what makes Axethrower so unique. The game is simple, fast and fun. Players need to constantly be aware of the situation and react quickly, keeping in mind where the other players are and where the weapon is. This is the core of the game. We have tested the game numerous of times to ensure the core of the game is fun, for everyone. Right now we are satisfied with the core gameplay and confident of it’s fun factor.

At the moment, the core of the game is finished. But we want to take Axethrower to the next development stage! Next to the fact that the core of the game is solid and fun, it is also very adaptable and open for adjustments. The future road of Axethrower is paved with numerous add-ons and extras. We can easily introduce new modes of play. We have already experimented with, for example, a bouncing weapon, exploding weapons and 2 vs 2. We will keep on working to implement new modes of play and extend our library of characters and levels.

Axethrower will be part of a great universe, known as the Cubiverse. The Cubiverse is the base of our lore, with millions of different Cube planets. Each with their own habitants, climate and everything.

The Cubiverse was created when The Great Cube and The Great Axe collided with each other. This event was called ‘The Big Slash’. When they collided The Great Cube and The Great Axe both shattered into billions of smaller cubes. These smaller cubes eventually formed the known Cubiverse of today.

You and all of our other Backers will play an important role in our lore. We are going to create a Kickstarter planet, with the humanoid life form known as ‘Backers’. The Backers are an ancient and wise civilization with great power and influence. They are the backbone of the Cubiverse.

As you can see, we are quite far in development already. But that’s where it stops unfortunately. We want to continue developing Axethrower. The future we have planned for Axethrower is clear; it needs to be online for all to enjoy! The future, online version of Axethrower will include:

We want to keep going, we want to make Axethrower the game it deserves to be. In order to make this possible we are turning to you for help. We need your support in order to make this playable offline demo into a full-fledged arena game playable online with all its features!

The time it will take to get this done will be no longer than a year. We’ve set some goals for when we reach our minimum funding amount and what will happen when we go above it:

€40,000: This is the primary goal of the campaign.

€50,000: If we reach this, we can hire an additional programmer for a faster and better result.

€55,000: We’ll add a Level editor, for you to make your own unique arena!

€60.000: (Further stretch goals will be sneakily added on as time goes on)

We are not a company that makes mugs or fancy T-shirts. No, we make games. Awesome games. And you, as backers, will be an important part of that. When you pledge for us, you will be granted citizenship of the Kickstarter planet. You will become a part of our lore, of the Cubiverse.

As a Backer, we will make sure you are involved in the design process. We’ll offer the Backers developer polls, alpha builds, beta testing, Q & A sessions and early online testing. Also, your chosen name might be used as a main character or NPC in future games.

Kickstarter gives us a close communication with our Backers. Giving us and our backers a user friendly environment to update, follow and comment on our activity. This will be a great base of operations and a solid core for our lore and future design projects. We chose Kickstarter for those exact reasons.

Right now we've been funding ourselves getting the game to the state it is in now. It’s a fun and exciting game with great potential. We want to bring this potential to the rest of you and we believe you can help us with that.

We at Sneaky Mammoth have a very simple motto:

“Small company, Small games, think Big!”

Knowing the mindset of the creators of Axethrower is important. The game will be fun, wacky and competitive. Just like its creators. We are an independent game studio from The Netherlands, founded by Hans Dunnik and Sven Boers. Our focus lies on combining game mechanics with narrative, and thus make small, intense and entertaining games. As experienced designers we have the capability, skills and strength to ensure Axethrower will be one of the top indie games out there.

Hans Dunnik

The big man with the booming voice and a heart of gold. Hans is the one that handles most of the business and marketing. He specializes in game mechanics and loves making pixel art. Hans is from the northern part of the county; some even call him a Viking… Although those are from a bit further north. He’s a smooth talker, but he has no problem putting his words into action. Likes Lasagne, Dislikes sleep.

Sven Boers

The man with the bandanna and silly humour. Sven does most of the development and behind the scenes work. He has a speciality in narrative game design and is also the code monkey of the duo. Sven is from the southern part of the country. He has a quiet, relaxed attitude on things. ‘Stress’ is not in his dictionary, neither is ‘giving up’.

First and foremost we want to thank you for taking the time to read this. We have confidence in the preparations we have done. Provided we can secure the funding needed, with which we need your help, we are prepared for any stumbling blocks trying to prevent completion!

Risks and challenges

The creation of a game is always challenging. We, as developers, face a variety of risks and obstacles we have to overcome. Here is how we will face the main risks and challenges we are likely to face.

The main challenge of it all?
Well, to be honest, we are only human and our main weakness is that we don’t know everything. This project will push our knowledge and skills to the limit. Apart from that, we have to learn a whole new set of skills to make it all happen.

But that doesn’t mean we cannot make it happen! If you look at the state of the project it is in now and the actual time it took to get it at this stage, we did a damn good job! We started building our game demo from scratch just a few weeks ago and went from nothing to this amazing fun little game. We even made the basics of it all in 1 single weekend (with a lot of coffee). We have gained much experience over the past years and are confident that we can complete this project within the set time limit.

Besides, we already have years of experience in the game industry business. We both have a degree in Game design and Development, graduated with honours! That experience is the foundation of all we create.

Financial Risk:
It takes time and money to create something amazing. Funding is needed to create time and give us the chance to use that time. We have been funding this project ourselves for the last year, getting to this point in development. We barely gave ourselves enough money for a scrap to eat (we live off noodles at the moment).

Getting Axethrower from an local multiplayer to a massive online multiplayer game requires more though. Right now we are asking for your support to give Axethrower a chance to become the great game it can and deserves to be.
