Shipping Delays
Hello everyone, I have some pretty crappy news to share.
When our order for 4,000 copies of DrunkQuest was finished printing, we had an initial 500 delivered by plane to make sure they could arrive in time to start shipping. The remainder of the order was sent by boat. The shipment from the boat was supposed to arrive yesterday and didn't. The reason?
http://news.yahoo.com/mayor-la-port-strike-federal-mediation-185124887--finance.html
The LA Dock Workers (were the games came in) were on strike. So some 3,500 copies of DrunkQuest have been sitting on a boat in the bay (for about a week I guess). The plan was to ship out the received 500 copies and with only a days gap, the rest of the games would arrive and we could continue shipping. However the strike has put a wrench in that plan. Thankfully however...
http://www.ctpost.com/news/article/Crippling-strike-at-LA-ports-ends-deal-reached-4091869.php
It looks like the strike is over. This will still put a gap in the majority of our shipments as we wait for the shipment to clear. I sincerely apologize for the delays, I was dreading posting this update all day knowing I was about to disappoint 2,000 awesome people who've been an awesome community during this entire campaign.
The initial 500 copies were shipped out and the rest will be shipped out as soon as they arrive. I'm sure you're upset and I don't blame you, please feel free to comment below and I will answer any questions you have.

Print and play went out a long time ago. Email Jasn, and he will send you a link.

Can I just check, the print-&-play copies will go out at the same time as the shipped ones?

Here's hoping that by "most" $200 backers means "all", considering how much was invested.

Any updates? Been 2 days :-) Hoping to get before Christmas.

Thanks for the update.

Jayme. My wife and I live in the Pasadena area. If you need someone local to hold the package for you, you can have it sent to my address, and you can come get it, or we could meet you at a restaurant/bookstore/other public place with it. You can email me at nowingsforbalrog@yahoo.com.
Creator Jayme Garcia on December 9, 2012
Hello, I completely understand that you can not control if workers go on strike. :( The only issue that I have is that after Dec 31st I will no longer be living in this apartment, and am currently not sure where I am going. Please let me know what I can do to help you in any way about this. (Pasadena, TX) Thank You.
Creator Jasn Painter on December 7, 2012
@Michael Marbut Send me a message via Kickstarter with the new address and I'll update our spreadsheet to reflect the change :)
@Alex That's actually something we're doing already :) We're using this time to get as pre-prepared as possible with the hopes of doing a few huge shipments and hopefully getting everyone their copies around the same time (depending on location of course)
@Christopher lol that seems like a dangerous game sir. When I read your idea I heard the Inception gong in my head, A drinking game within a drinking game!
@Shaun I got an email this morning that says my boxes have been x-rayed, inspected and are cleared. They're awaiting scheduling for unloading at the moment.
@Pete I agree, he's taken his liver hostage.
Creator Pete/Caleigh Alvarez on December 7, 2012
Jasn. Please airmail Christopher his package. Based on his N shots per day (where N=number of days waited) he will be dead in about two weeks. Apparently he is going to drink himself to death over drunk quest.
Creator Shaun Frost on December 7, 2012
Any update on shippment leaving the boats? Any word is a good word :-)
Creator Christopher Campbell on December 6, 2012
As with almost everyone else, this doesn't bother me at all. The biggest thing here is communication. You keep up updated and answer most questions. That really is a big deal and goes a long way. Even though I'm at the $200+ lvl, I have no issue waiting. Beer and Liquor will still be there. Aside from that there's always real munchkin with booze....just replace levels with drinks x 2, and up the winning level to 20 or so (adjust for tolerance).
Either way I'll approach my mailbox/doorstep with giddy anticipation daily. New drinking game. if it's not here tomorrow, one shot....next day, two shots...repeat till X day.
Creator Brandon 'Link' Copp-Millward on December 6, 2012
Hope I'm part of the lucky 500. Hope I have it in time for Holiday drinking fun, or at the very least for New Years.
Creator Alex Taylor on December 6, 2012
@Jasn - As someone who has done a lot of online trading with fellow hobbyists, I can tell you that there are a lot of good reasons to get upset when the package you're supposed to receive is late: didn't send when stated, mislabeled the package, etc. However, two reasons that NO ONE has control over are: customs and strikes. There is absolutely no way you could have foreseen or even avoided this strike, so why would we be angry at you? Disappointed? Yes. Angry at the cause of the delay? Absolutely. But I don't feel like anyone would be justified in feeling angry about the efforts you and Athena have made.
Out of curiosity, is there any way you and Athena could use this time to label/prepare the boxes for each shipment? Possibly separate all identical orders into groups and make a stack of boxes for each. Hopefully that would allow you to pre-label all of the packages without losing track of which products each person ordered.
Creator Gettemy Haddle on December 6, 2012
Its alright we waited this long a couple more days wont ruin us it is a great product well worth the wait!
Creator Exoromans on December 6, 2012
Just kinda out of curiosity though Jasn, you said something about the Founders n such being part of the 500 sent out?
Creator Mark Keating on December 6, 2012
No worries. Some things are just beyond everyone's control. The very informative updates are seriously appreciated. You guys are totally running this thing the right way.
Creator Curt Warrington on December 6, 2012
Thanks for the update jasn I just wanted to say this was my first kickstarter and you have set the bar high for those to follow
Creator Chris Milstead on December 6, 2012
Unfortunate, but not a big problem. The update is far more appreciated than not hearing anything. Thanks guys!
Creator Chris Q. on December 5, 2012
I'm honestly not surprised if someone received a copy and hasn't posted about it. Considering probably only 10% (If that many) of the backers actually comment. I know I don't comment on some kick-starters and that's even after receiving my product. But I really do hope some people did receive it, if I happen to be a lucky 500 then I will certainly let everyone know.
Creator Stephanie Echols on December 5, 2012
That's pretty unfortunate, a lot of places have been going on strike in California lately... stupid economy.
Anyhow, thanks for the head up. I was wondering, as some other people had asked: Is there any way to know when our copy has shipped? I live in an apartment and it would be helpful for me to have an idea of when I should be home or checking my mail, as the mail box wont fit the game and they wont leave things at our doors (thank goodness).
I was looking for an answer in the responses, but couldn't find one.
Thanks!
Creator Morten Friis on December 5, 2012
No worries Jasn - you guys have been amazing throughout the entire campaign. This is definitely not your fault, and even if it were, I wouldn't be upset about. I just really appreciate you keeping us updated - that's by far the most important thing (even if I had to wait a couple of months more).
I'm obviously a bit sad that I will not be able to bring the game to our New Years party, but I'm sure I'll have plenty of opportunities in the future.
Can't wait to see what you guys come up with for the expansions. Best of luck.
Creator Jupp3 on December 5, 2012
> If you received your copy please post about it. Even I'm starting to get worried of where they are.
Perhaps everyone who already got their copy is having a terrible hangover...
As for "miscommunication" over this matter, the news article seems to be dated 4. 12. and the post about it was 5. 12. I wouldn't accuse anyone of not making "Well, is there a strike this time?" queries. Especially if the delivery was expected on the same day the post was made. Although perhaps the "500 first, the rest later" got buried in the noise.
Creator Michael Marbut on December 5, 2012
Jasn I totally understand shipping issues it is totally out of your control. I have not received my copy as of yet nor do I know If I was one of the 500. if not I will need to update you on my shipping address as I will be moving this weekend. Though I have my mail set to forward to my new address I would feel better not having to rely on the postal service to do it. How should I get that new address to you?
Creator Dérek Boily aka MrLeRobot on December 5, 2012
@Bryan That sums up things quite well. Totally agree.
Creator Lyrael, TOWoEOS on December 5, 2012
Don't worry about it, there's no way you could have seen that coming and nothing you can do about it anyway. I can wait. :)
and *hugs* because I know you must be far more upset about this than anybody else and you bloody well deserve a hug.
Creator Bryan on December 5, 2012
I am going to agree with David Talboy here. The communication and customer service for this project has been above par. I know things didn't go as smoothly as everyone wanted, but it's what happens when things get bumpy the define character. It would have been easy for Jasn to simply make a one sentence post, "There is a delay in shipping so don't expect anything till after new years," and then turned his e-mail off until the 1'st. Instead, he went the extra mile and gave us answers and communication. I don't blame people for being annoyed, but we should keep things in perspective (which it sounds like we all are).
I'm looking on the bright side: I got to back a new company that had a product I am interested in, and in doing so found out that I also got to back a company that takes pride in customer service. That's a win-win.

I would be lying if I didn't say I was disappointed. I am leaving for California on the 20th and I was looking forward to playing this with my brother and since we only see each other once a year it stings a little.....But realize my disappointment is for the situation and not with the way you have handled your campaign. Keep up the good work and thank you for the update. All I can do now is hope a Christmas miracle happens and the package arrives right before I leave:o)
((Also thanks for suggesting the PnP for those that did. Its sadly a no go for me because of my black and white / doesn't like heavy paper laser printer unfortunately))

How can we find out if we were 1 of the 500 people that got 1 shipped to us or not?
Thanks for the update, also, if it won't be in time for xmas how can i change my address to my home one (i would either be in my college city or my hometown, and dont wanna miss it because i already got home for vacation and dont want to have it at home once i return for school)
Awesome that you're working so hard to get this to us, screw those boats! Send my thanks to all your friends that are helping you with this and a big thank you to you for making this awesome product!!!

@Josh I received an email this morning stating that my boat was still in the dock and that the shipment is waiting onboard, now that the strike is over hopefully no more boats leave!

Last post for the day to as I really feel like a douche now, but for the backing members, can we please get a new link for the print and play version? The previous on has expired and I never got a chance to print it out since I upgraded to Windows 8.

@Jasn Painter
Thank you for the update! Since I seem to be the loud mouth of the people that post, I wanted to say this has answered most of my questions. I am not seeking "blood" by any means over this. I understand that you have normal people jobs and lives outside of launching this, and I do appreciate the long hours and days that Loot Corps has put in.
That being said, I will not be expecting mine until after the first of the new year. We do need to keep in mind that from that article that was linked, the strike did occur for roughly a week so they have seven days of shipments to get out. It also stated that some boats returned to point of origin and some left for other jobs. Hoping that wasn't the case here but rather not get my hopes up if so.
Again thank you for the update.
Creator Matthew D on December 5, 2012
Well there is not a whole lot you can do when the shippers are to blame. I am happy to hear that most of the 200s are out. Although it is unfortunate that some people will not be receiving theirs at the same time, there's not a whole lot you can do when you're not in possession of the games. It's not something like another company did where they sold copies to people before everyone from KS got theirs.
Creator Jasn Painter on December 5, 2012
I'm very humbled guys thank you for the understanding! I get an email anytime someone comments and this morning when I saw my inbox had 60 emails I prepped myself for people screaming at me, swallowed my pride and clicked on the kickstarter link. But after reading all the comments I have to say, I'm not sure how, but this campaign has gathered an amazing group of backers and has also somehow filtered out the normal internet trolls. Even those of you who are upset (rightfully so) have good points and aren't yelling or typing in all caps. Rather then answer each question several times individually, I'm going to answer them in bullet points below. If I miss anything or if there are more questions just let me know and I'll answer those too...
- By Xmas?: I spent the majority of the day on the phone with various port authority figures trying to see what could be done to expedite the process (even asking if I could unload the boat myself :P) during those calls several people kept saying the delay would be 5 days. Others said, they had no time frame. Since me and Athena started shipping we've developed a system (like a factory line) and so I've asked a group of friends to come over when the shipment arrives. The hope is to drastically speed up the process and get all the games out as quickly as possible to make it by Xmas. Most shipping companies I've talked to say the 14th is the day the recommend having everything needed by Xmas shipped. If we get the games before then, I'll do whatever it takes to try and make that date!
- Tracking Numbers: we've software that can add a tracking number for around $1.08 per package. The main reason we haven't been using them is because of the time involved in adding them and then sending out individual emails. The software doesn't automate it at all. 5 extra minutes doesn't seem like a big deal for 1 package but for 2,400 it means an extra 125 hours of work. But with the extra friends helping during shipping we might be able to start sending tracking numbers. I was prioritizing speed over features before.
- Miscommunication: I understand the slight feelings of being mislead by the last update. The plan was to take a few days off from our day jobs and speed up the process (something we'll still do) in order to make up the lost time between shipments. But my lack of communication in that plan has caused problems. It won't happen again and it shouldn't have happened this time, I apologize.
- The 500: The Majority of the 500 copies were sent to backers at the $25 level. With some $45 and most of our $200 backers. If you received your copy please post about it. Even I'm starting to get worried of where they are.
- International The packages we're shipping International are going by plane. So the ones that have been sent should be on their way and the ones we send when we get the boat copies should only be a few days longer then US shipping.
Creator Griffin Patterson on December 5, 2012
Wow... as if people could be upset by this mishap. If Jasn hadn't gotten 500 airmailed, would people be as upset? I don't think so. Jasn has been absolutely transparent with us and it is terrific. While I would have liked an original unboxing like that of Level 99's game compilation, the fact that he let us know exactly what is going on is amazing. Especially because he has been doing a nine to midnight every night to get to where he is. Ignore them Jasn, you're boss.

Creator R.j. Wilson on December 5, 2012
Oh, also. Have you guys forgotten your print and play copies? If your desperate to have them for a party, do what I did. Print a set!
Creator R.j. Wilson on December 5, 2012
Look at it this way people: most companies would not have informed you when the items had arrived from the manufacturer, would have given a vague "Winter 2012/2013" timeline, and would not have shipped ANY copies until they were all in their hands. No amount of additional communication (which Jasn has done very well with) would have changed this situation. Shipping hiccups happen, and most companies hide them from you with the tactics listed above. If you can complain about anything, its that he maybe remained too optimistic that the shipping issues would resolve in time and not cause a delay.
Please, dont criticize him for being too transparent with us.
Creator Josh Davis on December 5, 2012
@Brandon
In no way am I "trolling" the internet. While I understand that Kickstarter is not a store front, the expectation set from Loot Corps is that if you back my company, I will compensate you with this wonderful game.
I have seen many people talk about Jasn communication during this whole process. They are right, he has been great with communication...until the last few weeks. He has been picking up things a bit here the last few days which has been appreciated.
Now as I stated in my last post, I understand that things happen. Could Jasn have predicted or known about the port strike? Not likely. Could he have posted from the get go "Hey we got our first 500 copies and hoping to have the rest shortly"? Absolutely. Do I think that we need to stake him up and flog him for this? Not really. Would I like to see more communication and some answers to questions? For sure.
Here are some things I think that would help make this situation a bit calmer for all involved.
It has now been stated that 500 copies have been shipped. No one has yet to post with the words we have all been looking forward to "I got mine today!". Some clarification on this would really make myself and a few others feel much better.
1. How are you filling orders? Is it by pledge level, last name, first name, random, or perhaps backing number?
2. When did these 500 ship? Did you wait until all 500 were packaged or drop them off in batches? Per the update, I would say batches but again no one has posted that they got theirs yet.
3. Will the Kickstarter backers get their orders before retail orders will be shipped?
I do realize that some of these questions put Loot Corps in a rock and a hard place. There will be folks that will not like the response no matter what you give, but at least then, your "investors" (also the people that will spread advertising for your company), will have been informed.
Creator Paul Newson on December 5, 2012
I don't think anyone is really that upset! if they are then I think they may have a drink problem.... Me...I can cope a few extra days before my delivery arrives. Thanks for the update :)
Creator Alycia Barcelou on December 5, 2012
They expected the arrival to be yesterday, did research as to why it didn't and found out. It's not their fault. If this were a Wal-Mart shipment, then yes. Be angry/upset, etc that this didn't show up "on time." This is a Kickstarter company, people. They're people like you and me starting a business. Stuff happens. Quite honestly, if I were Jasn, I'd ask for some compensation from the shipping company you used. That's not okay and obviously has caused customers of yours to be upset.
If you're upset, consider the fact that he could have not told us and said that it was normal shipping time when we inquired. Be thankful that he's on top of his game and as soon as he recognized a problem, he alerted us. As far as I'm concerned, kudos to you Jasn, and thanks for the heads up.
Creator Chris Puzzo on December 5, 2012
My girlfriend works in shipping / logistics and this kind of stuff happens all the time. There's no getting around the ports. She even had a port in Brazil seize and destroy one of her customer's pieces of machinery under false pretenses and there was nothing that could be done about it. Be thankful that they made it at all!
I second Jonathan Warren's question re: tracking numbers. That would be great to get whenever the good actually arrive at DQ HQ.
Creator Kiwi Ham on December 5, 2012
Out of all the Kickstarterprpjects I have funded, you are the one of the top communicators. I personally do not mind the delay as I am in no rush (I just want to play the game!). I don't think you should be beating yourself up too much;albeit there are upset people but there are always delays with these things and so thank you for updating us :)
Creator Genevieve Faber on December 5, 2012
I have to admit, I am rather upset about the communication too. The last update lead me to believe that they were knocking out 150 per day. I really needed mine before Dec 20th since that's when I leave for the holidays to my hometown, Milwaukee and I had already told my new years party plans I was bringing the game to enjoy. I understand delays happen, but the communication seemed a bit misleading. I'm also a bit worried that no one of the lucky 500 has mentioned getting their copy.
Creator Jonathan Warren on December 5, 2012
Just keep us updated Jason , and we will be happy. Question are you emailing tracking numbers, or we'll just have a nice surprise for us one day?
Creator Brendon FitzGerald on December 5, 2012
I think it is absurd to accuse Jasn, who has had one of the best Kickstarter communicated projects, of being deceitful or misleading. Clearly he has had 500 copies to be doing what he stated they were doing for the past few weeks. Just because the bulk of the shipment got delayed does not mean he's been sitting on his thumbs watching the other 500 copies grow moldy. And shipping clearly was going well if it got to LA. That means they had been SHIPPED and were on their way to him. He even tracked down the reason why they got delayed. You'll have to forgive the man for not being psychic for looking into it before they were a day late. Lastly, if you can't handle life's unforeseen difficulties with the maturity to not need to point fingers and be upset with someone, than at least do us the favor of not trolling the internet with your negativity.
Creator Christine Zipay on December 5, 2012
Thanks for the update. Don't beat yourself up over things you can't control.
