About

What is the Pop Fic Review?

Erin Underwood and Hannah Strom-Martin are co-editing the Pop Fic Review, an anthology comprising pieces of literature from fiction writers, essayists, memoirists, poets, and playwrights that confront the definition of "pop" through their own unique expressions of what it means to be Pop Fic. Plus, each piece is written by a member of the Stonecoast MFA community--a competitive MFA program in creative writing where mixing genres and forms is not only accepted, but encouraged.

The publication of the Pop Fic Review will include 100 trade paperback copies of the anthology published by the literary blog Underwords <www.underwordsblog.com/>, founded by Erin Underwood, as well as an eBook published by Smashwords <www.smashwords.com>. Our fundraising goal for this project is $2,000. However, if we exceed our goal, we will begin planning for a second edition of the Pop Fic Review

Creating the Anthology

The submission period for the Pop Fic Review ran from January 1, 2011 through June 30, 2011. Since submissions closed, we have sifted through all of the pieces, choosing the ones that challenge and define the current definition of popular fiction while also exemplifying the quality and diversity of talent within the Stonecoast community. We have just released the Table of Contents, and we're in the process of requesting edits from our contributors and preparing the manuscript for our copyeditor. Our current projected release date is set for mid December 2011.

Funding the Pop Fic Review

Our original plan for the Pop Fic Review was to produce the anthology only as an eBook for easy distribution at a low cost since all of our costs are out-of-pocket. However, as we researched our options and began receiving requests for printed books, we realized that publishing the Pop Fic Review in print and as an eBook was the way to go.

However, to do this project right, we need more money than what either of us has readily available. Still, that's exactly what we plan to do. We're taking the leap and will be publishing the Pop Fic Review in print and as an eBook--with a little help from our friends. All we need is $2,000 to cover the costs of printing, paying the authors, and covering the related publication and marketing costs to bring the anthology to market.

Publishing the Book

We are now in the phase of bringing the manuscript together: editing it, proofing it, sending it to print, and sending it out for reviews.  We're also working on generating presales via Kickstarter to help us move forward, confident in our ability to produce the best anthology possible. We'll also be posting project updates to keep our supporters up-to-date on our progress.

Thank You

We're proud to be a part of this project, and we are thrilled to have your support. Thank you so much for being a part of the Pop Fic Review.

Cheers,

Erin & Hannah
