In an ancient realm where humans are ruled by vampires, a cruel vampire queen finds herself caught between her forbidden love for a human slave and a revolt of humans and vampires against her.
An epic dark fantasy. A tale of blood, war, and intrigue. A love story.
These are some of the things ARKHALLA is, though not all. Take a moment to journey with us back in time, all the way to the dawn of mankind. The time is 5000 years ago. The place is the ancient lands of Sumer. The domain of Arkhalla.
Her name is whispered in fear across the cities and kingdoms of early man. For uncounted years she has ruled from her city of Ur, implacable, cruel, an undying creature feasting on human blood, her demonic powers making monsters of those she infects and enslaving all others under her reign of terror.
But when Shamath, a young prisoner captured in the bloodthirsty Queen's latest war, is forced into becoming her slave, the unthinkable happens – for he is also captivated by Arkhalla's unearthly beauty, while Arkhalla herself has her lost humanity reawakened by the young man.
For Bel, the warlike general of Ur who desires Arkhalla for himself, their liaison is an abomination that slowly drives him to treachery and revolt. Little do the three of them know their actions are about to plunge the kingdom in total war – and that their story is only the beginning of a tale of horror that will reach through the centuries to ravage the modern world.
This is only the core of our story. First being produced in a 7-issue comic book series from ARH Comix, Arkhalla’s tale will also be branching into a novel adapted from its script, and serves as the launching point for multiple Graphic Novel stories set within the rich canvas of this fantasy universe.
If what you’ve read up to this point piques your interest, let me tell you – there’s so much more in our saga. Far from a conventional vampire story, Arkhalla is a tale of star-crossed lovers, self-sacrifice, and redemption, with a generous dose of sensuality, horror and gore thrown in its unique mix. But the best part of this story is its focus on the human frailties, emotions, and relationships of its characters – filled with intrigue, jealousy, and treachery as well as courage, determination and romance. Take our star-crossed couple, for instance – Arkhalla and Shamath, a queen and a slave, an immortal vampire and a young mortal man. Together, they embody all the elements of an epic, great love story against all odds. It is beautiful to see how Arkhalla, without even noticing, falls in love with Shamath, and how he grows from hating her to being willing to give his own life to save her, despite of all the atrocities she has committed against her human thralls. Even though she tries to corrupt him, it is his pure heart that winds up changing her, for he chooses to see the good in Arkhalla, the human woman still yearning for salvation underneath all the horror. And in a manner akin to Ancient Greek or Shakespearean tragedy, the two of them barely have the time to fulfill the promise of their love before inexorable fate brings them disaster.
Beyond the lovers, ARKHALLA’s world features a whole set of characters with their own agency and goals, who see what is happening between Arkhalla and Shamath as, variably, an outrage and an opportunity. Arkhalla’s absolute rule vexes all her subjects, especially the powerful vampires that form her Council of Twelve, and although she is respected and feared for her immense power, when the opportunity presents itself, they all betray her, and even those who share Arkhalla’s bed are one step away from putting an arrow through her heart. Bel, the once honor-bound warrior turned into a warlord of monsters, the spurned lover who becomes the leader of the plot to overthrow Arkhalla, using even Shamath against her. Narama, the huntress, an archer with no peer, enthralled into serving Arkhalla as her champion and plaything, yet yearning to be free of her. Sin, the scheming vampire councilor, chief architect of the conspiracy against the queen, and the one who recruits the rest of Arkhalla’s Council to his and Bel’s cause. And let us not forget the humans, like Gilmesh, the captured soldier that rises to lead the revolt of the humans, and Shamath himself, torn between joining the cause of his fellow humans against their tormentors and acknowledging his growing feelings for the vampire queen
In our mythology, Arkhalla is the first of her kind, doomed to a cursed immortality of blood drinking by the dark gods of primordial Sumer, and our story's distinctive and fresh approach to the Horror/Vampire genre as epic fantasy and character drama revels in the use of the genre’s familiar tropes, yet always with a twist. The vampires’ blood craving, their cursed existence, the erotic bond that ties their victims to them, all these features are taken to their utmost within Arkhalla’s saga. The dark queen is a femme fatale irresistible to men and women alike, and her story doesn’t shy away from the sexual implications of such a character in an ancient, taboo-free culture. But the main draw of the story transcends the horror, the gore, and the sensual scenes to captivate the audience with its humanity.
If you ask me, I like to compare ARKHALLA, QUEEN OF VAMPIRES with two of my favorite TV series, STARZ’s SPARTACUS and HBO’s GAME OF THRONES, because beyond the nudity, the violence and gore, it was always the plot, the characters and intrigues that made those shows so amazing and breathtaking to watch. And I believe with every fiber of my being that Arkhalla’s world can be developed into something that is just as complex and exciting.
Risks and challenges
We have some really cool stories to tell, but it's hard to survive in such a competitive market, especially when no one has ever heard of you. Our goal is to raise awareness to the stories and characters we created because we truly believe that like us, you will also love the stories we have to tell.
We have completed the stories for all seven issues of our Queen of Vampires Graphic Novel saga, but due to production costs we need your support in bringing issue five of this saga to life as printing and shipping costs have brought us to a standstill.
Above you will find a link to free digital copies of the first two issues of Queen of Vampires. We're sure you will find the story telling compelling and the artwork rich and stylized. Once you enter this world you will (as we all do) fall in love with ARKHALLA and want to see this story through to completion.
I have thought a lot about this campaign, and if we should really do it or not, but at this point, the only way to get to the end of this fantastic project is if more people get to know what we are doing, so even if you do not contribute, please take a look at the first two free issues we have made available for free download. Queen of Vampires is one of the best stories ever written. You will believe me, the moment you read it.
