I saw the Victorian age as a time of profound change in the world in general, and particularly for enslaved Africans in the Americas. The beginnings of the industrial revolution and the moral dilemma of a democracy practicing slavery were touchstones of controversy. This period also saw the full brunt of colonialism on the world as European countries fought over land, resources and people the world over. I felt that setting a story in this time-frame would give me the ability to investigate the mystical traditions of indigenous peoples throughout the world while also looking at the coming impact of technology, scientific modernism, and the lives of African descendants in this interesting historical period. By putting the hero in the Victorian Age, I seek to insert the marginalized and misrepresented voices of these cultures into the pantheon of 19th Century heroic literature.
