This film shows the story of a woman who lost her only child when he was 32 and then, less than one year later, the internet start-up where they both worked. It charts her emotional voyage as she goes from hopelessness to hopeful. Organizing pop-up restaurants in peoples’ homes and cooking for her son’s friends, as well as complete strangers, she literally cooks herself out of the darkness.
It was filmed over a 6 month period which included a road/air trip from London to Berlin, New York, Beverly Hills and Silicon Valley. It charts her inner journey as she traces her son’s footsteps as an actor, writer and chef in these cities, each of which possess mystical qualities and secrets that contribute to healing resilience.
Sweet Momentum Entertainment was founded by Shelley Taylor in the spring of 2011 to produce the documentary, “In His Footsteps” (working title). The company was built out of frustration- she had looked for but didn’t find any films that showed a model of how life could still feel good after such a devastating loss, and so she set out to film her own. As the documentary went into production she was encouraged by many to participate in other projects, and has taken her experience as former CEO of a digital entertainment company to work to bring projects, largely by and about women, to fruition.
What is Kickstarter? Over the course of running the Nomad Chef, Shelley was introduced to a number of independent singer-songwriters, many who have used Kickstarter as a platform to fund their upcoming album. Kickstarter is a crowd-funded platform that allows creative types (writers, musicians, filmmakers, artists, etc.) to raise money for their passion-fueled projects. Incentives are introduced for donations of all different levels, from a simple $5 to show support to the ultimate $2,500 package which offers the donor producer credits amongst other great rewards. Here’s the catch: if the project doesn’t raise enough money to reach their goal, none of the money will be collected and the campaign is considered a failure. Any level of donation is extremely appreciated, and your credit card will NOT be charged until the project is a completely funded success.
Rewards! The subject of the film may be enough to convince you to make a donation, but there are lots of incentives for each level of donation. For example, at the $25 level of donation, the donor will receive 10 illustrated recipe cards from the Nomad Chef (a secret restaurant run by Shelley Taylor) and one video recipe of "How to Cook the Nomad Chef's Most Popular hors d’oeuvre.” PLUS password to view online screenings and full-length documentary upon completion. At the $75 level, 1 1/2 hours of online coaching for business or life challenge via Skype with Shelley Taylor, a signed copy of the documentary on DVD upon release. PLUS password to view online screenings. There are many other rewards for any level of donation. They all come with tremendous gratitude and a warm virtual hug.
The idea was suggested that Kickstarter would be the ideal way to fund the criteria needed to successfully film, edit, produce, promote and launch “In His Footsteps.” Producing this full-length documentary requires $20,000 to pay for editing and other post-production costs. Shelley has already invested $30,000 to shoot the film. Films like this usually have very little opportunity to earn money, but it will be submitted to festivals and the goal is to have a small theatrical release in cinemas, and perhaps broadcast on television.
Thank you so much for being a part of this journey. We hope this film will bring comfort and hope to those who experience inexplicable grief, loss of a job, or any other seemingly insurmountable life challenge. If each person who views this can find a piece of themselves in this story then the film in and of itself is a success. We appreciate every contribution and are grateful for the love and support everyone gives this project, especially the artists who have contributed their music to the sound track.
