On October 4, 2017, The Wali Sanga recorded our third record. We tracked eight songs in six hours -- no overdubs, and no vocals (we did those later.) I'm calling the record Big Ears.
That's me after my first gig in NYC as a leader. It was January 2012. That same year I first heard the expression “big ears.” It was the title of a book. Big Ears (2008) is a collection of essays -- all written by women -- on the topic of jazz and gender. Big Ears taught me about the LENS through which you can experience jazz/music. It’s not only about dots on a page or a sound coming out of the grooves of an LP. It's about life, culture, context and experiences.
Big Ears is a cornucopia of grooves that I've been trying to work out since moving to New York six years ago. It’s the most complete and accurate buckshot of my output and what I've been soaking up. Each song has strains of real moments fused atop styles that I can directly link to music I’ve checked out in town; like a snowball or a funky tumbleweed pickin up and shakin off. Brazilian-Funk. Jazz-Rock. Dad Rock.
The first single on Big Ears before it's officially out. “Chump Change” was written almost instantly after a trip I took to Panama in January 2016. The lyrics deal with shaking off old memories to make room for new ones. The see-saw compromises we must all make with ourselves and those around us to keep equilibrium. Stream it now via Apple Music/Spotify/Soundcloud.
It sounds so good because I found the perfect mixing engineer. His name is Nic Hard. He’s worked with indie rockers The Bravery and now he works with Snarky Puppy. Nic is mixing Big Ears.
Big Ears is a plea to OPEN YOUR EARS and to not write off anything, anyone, any moment. And that's as much of a reminder to YOU, as it is to ME.
We’ve created a batch of exclusive merch as rewards for your donation to cover the costs to release Big Ears into … your ears.
